So who cares if those channels beat TCM!! I think we've all come to the conclusion that Classic movies are not everyone's cup of tea. What those channels show are not classic movies--different programming, different audiences. Unless you like seeing Shawshank Redemption on a daily basis (and I love that movie--those channels just show it A LOT!!)

I was very sad to hear that Janet Leigh passed away. I was a fan and thought she just had to be the greatest lady to be Jamie Leigh Curtis' mom because Jamie is great too. She gave some really sweet performances and she will be missed.

I live in Huntsville Al. which is Miss Bankhead's hometown. There's an historical marker dedicated to her in our downtown square in case anyone ever visits here and wants to see it. I believe it's on the Southeast Corner of the square (I'm not too good on NSEW but I believe that's it.)

It's funny you brought up Three Strangers because last night after The Maltese Falcon was over Bob said that Three Strangers was written as a sequel to TMF and Dashiell Hammett, since he had copyright to the characters, wouldn't let it go forward. It was eventually made but without Mary Astor and Humphrey Bogart. I think he also said it was going to be shown in the next couple of weeks so you might want to check the schedule coming up.

I meant in my previous posts that in my mom's hometown that the same package is about $75 per month ($15 more than I pay.)
-
That's too bad. I already have digital but it's only $55.00 per month and that includes the Encore Package. It blows my mind how much cable costs elsewhere in the US. My mom lives 100 miles away but still has the same cable company (Comcast) and the same package there is about $15.00 per month. Check out the prices of satellites and see if that's any savings (although you're a slave to the weather when you have a satellite.) I'm sorry that cable companies feel like they have to rip people off when TCM isn't even a digital channel (as far as I know.)

No husband--but I will explain since I've expressed my hatred for this movie for months in various threads.
The whole premise of the movie just got to me. Men can't be friends with women without wanting to sleep with them? And then "best friends" finally realize they love each other after 10 years? And no I didn't like the whole restaurant scene but not for the reason you might think. Hey--I willing to suspend disbelief as well as the next movie lover but this movie just asked too much of me.
-
Two movies that I have irrational hate for are "Citizen Kane" and "When Harry Met Sally." I don't know why on the 1st one but I don't really want to explain why I hate the 2nd one.

ike358--Mongo's posting name is bansi4.

I know my mother went crazy if I went braless back in the 70's, because really I shouldn't have. And as far as I can remember my mother wore blouses with a skirt or slacks most of the time back in the late 50's & early 60's. But she has never worn jeans that I know of. But she certainly wasn't the pearls and heels type.

The Phoenix brother in Parenthood is Joaquin Phoenix who's been quite the breakout star lately. He just went by the name Leaf Phoenix back then, but that's him.

Haven't been able to post--just wanted to thank everyone for the Bday wishes from yesterday and wish a belated one to Keithfromkc and his twin.

I enjoyed the Ulmer films I watched too. I got a huge kick out of the Yiddish films (I watched 3 of them.) The one that was on late, "Green Fields," had a young Herschel Bernardi, which I thought was fun. But I will admit that the ones I watched were rather poor quality, but at least they are available to watch. Indeed it was very different and I like it when TCM has days like that.

I didn't catch this as a kid when I first saw this movie but I saw it a couple of months back and I thought Stewart was rather melancholy in the role, like there was something he was trying to forget so he drank and had an invisible friend who wouldn't let him down. That's just my take on his portrayal.

I don't know if I'm dreaming this but I think Rock Hudson's friends did call him "Roy" instead of Rock. Kind of like Jack Nicholson's friends call him "Johnny."

We have our spats but for the most part this is one big happy family. Not much hate on this board at all. Very mature comments and entertaining discussions. BTW I miss you Slappy3500, where are you?

Mongo--just wanted to say glad you're back and that Charley and Frances haven't "dampened" your spirit. Let's just pray Ivan stays out of your hair.

I've seen that documentary and Ford wasn't exactly forthcoming in his responses. But Bogdonavich is quite the historian and it's worth seeing.

I agree with you gwtwbooklover. I think Elizabeth Taylor would have stayed married to Todd, and probably had a completely different career. Todd, though, was quite a bit older than her so he may not still been alive today.
-
Keith--Maybe they'll repeat the docu on Carl Th. Dreyer again before the month is over. While slow going in parts, they did have an interview with Falconetti's daughter and did explain her life after Jeanne D'arc.
-
But Mongo--Taylor cheated on Stanwyck and she had to divorce him to save face.
-
Yeah--that was it--I couldn't post yesterday but I emailed Jude and she concurred.

You're close Leo. It's "The Miracle of Our Lady of Fatima." They show it sometimes on the religious channel EWTN (I don't know if you're familar with it but it's a Catholic TV channel.) I saw this a kid and have seen it a couple of time in the last few years. I'm not Catholic but I always loved this movie. Sherry Jackson was the younger girl and she was a child star (I think she might have been on Danny Thomas's show in the 50's) Gilbert Roland played a local peasant that was one of the adults that believed the children. Very interesting story, whether you believe or not.

What Becomes a Legend Most?

I think Phoenix has been having a hard time lately filming the Johnny Cash biopic "Walk the Line." Maybe he wasn't the most articulate on the talk shows--did you see Tom Cruise about 2 months ago on Letterman. He giggled like a school girl for like 5 minutes over an off the cuff remark that Dave said. They had to go to a commercial so that he could compose himself. I think that being on those shows are kind of nerve racking. Not everyone is as glib as Travolta or Hanks. You don't see Pacino or DeNiro on them a lot. So I don't think being able to converse on a talk show necessarily indicates whether someone is a legend or not. BTW gwtwbooklover, I'm a Travolta fan too--I'm glad he's doing good work now and that's a credit to Tarantino. I don't know that he's be getting the scripts he does without the "Pulp Fiction" comeback and Oscar nomination.
