This is a general rambling and not just aimed at June's schedule. While I like themes and the connect the dots style of programming that TCM does (todays, Robert Donat salute is an example) I wonder if is sometimes a bit of a trap and lends itself to showing the same movies over and over again.
There are hundreds and hundreds of films that i suspect are readily available to TCM but are perhaps overlooked as they don't fall into these popular theme days and perhaps as easily pigeon holed as the ones we see all the time.
Why not have several days of potpourri as they do on Jeopardy? No holds barred unrestricted programming bliss. Maybe that Suggest a Movie list would heat up a little too.
Interesting point, and I'd say it appears to agree with a little side-effort of mine. In my MoviecollectorOH database, I now have 3600 records in the main table. Each record correlates to one movie. It started off being empty, and I am populating it as I add movies. One at a time. There is a field called "Topics", which I added to tie movies together which have a common theme. It is just a text field, populated by a pulldown selector of common themes which I have come up with. Having said that, its usage is loosely similar to the TCM themes. I have been pretty consistent in filling that in, but have been slacking a bit lately. As I said, there are 3600 records total, but there are about 1100 records that have any Topic associated with them. I could probably fill in a couple hundred more, but that would still leave about 2/3 of all my movies which don't have a theme (according to my own themes).
P.S. In all fairness, TCM would need to limit their thematic programming to about 1/3 of its total output in order to correlate with my results. I am unsure of the actual stats though for their themed programming.P.P.S. Upon further thought, this would only be comparable to TCM's schedule during the periods which they are doing thematic programming. So during those hours they might be limiting themselves to 1/3 of their potential programming, or whatever percentage it may be.

This is not a new issue, I have had this for as long as I have been posting here. I use Firefox, and the data entry forms normally have a red squiggly line underlining proper nouns or incorrect spellings. No indication of misspelling on this site. Not sure if that is administrator-disabled, or if it is due to the package they are using. In this day and age, it is an uncommon thing for me to run into.

The fact of the matter is that it wasn't for "manufactured on demand" most of those classic films would never have seen a release on DVD. Demand for those titles just isn't enough to support a full-blown retail store release. Warner Bros. found a way to make them available in smaller numbers while still being profitable and other studios have followed. Obviously it's become a big success for the studios and collectors alike.
True, in the early days, there were problems with some DVD-R releases, but over the years quality control has improved and frankly the format has received an undeserved bad rap. Nowadays, most of the complaints seem to come from people who have only "heard" that they're troublesome and have never bought any themselves.
Speaking for myself, I have about three thousand DVR-R discs that were recorded over the years and have yet to have a single one turn into a "coaster".
In a way, it is too bad one can't wander the stores browsing at them, but if comes down to MOD being the only way to get access to those otherwise unavailable titles, I'll gladly forgo browsing.
Outside of TCM actually playing them, this is really the way to go for many of the harder to find movies.
I have about half as many DVDs as you, but also do HD recording as well. I suspect that the DVDs that turn out to be coasters for other people were coasters to begin with, and weren't detected (as they might if they had used Verify with ImgBurn). That is not possible with a shelf-top unit though, unless it temporarily stores the video on a hard drive first.
I have read the results for a study or two that show the outside areas (normally unused areas) of a DVD not holding up, or otherwise failing after torture tests, but that is torture testing and not using the DVD as designed. So I think we can safely ignore those too.
The following is for others, in case they might be having issues:
As far as earlier first-generation stamped (replicated) DVDs not holding up, that is very well documented, as the layers were separating at the glue. This can be observed as spots or splotches on the media side of the disc. Things have changed significantly though since DVD technology in the early 2000s, and I haven't had that happen since.
Vast improvements have been made for burned (duplicated) DVDRs as well. The brands I use are Taiyo Yuden, and to a greater extent, Verbatim AZO (AZO is a marking on the container, not all Verbatims have this). The non-AZO Verbatim discs are made in a non-Verbatim facility in China.
Manufacturer can be verified by putting the DVDR discs into a computer and running the freeware program DVD Identifier, which will read the manufacturer identification number on the DVDR disc itself, and give you the actual factory of origin.
So for instance the Verbatim AZO series (and also the DVD-R/W discs) will say something like "MCC (Mitsubishi Chemical Corp)" or "MKM (Mitsubishi Kagaku Media)", whereas the non-AZO series will say something completely different. FWIW, I tried a couple MOD discs just now, and presumably due to the copyright protection, I was unable to enumerate the manufacturer on the first try.

If I remember correctly Jackie Gleason had a house fire in 1983 and he lived in hotel for about a year while his home was being re-built. When Morley Safer came to do the piece on Gleason in 1984 for '60 Minutes' he was still living in that hotel. William A. Henry's book on Gleason said the hotel where Gleason stayed was in Pompano Beach and was apparently where the '60 Minutes' interview was filmed.
Maybe the estate sale was for items left over from the house fire that Gleason didn't want any more.
I forgot to get back to you to say that sounds like we could be talking about the same thing. I also remembered that portions of the estate that he was selling off at that time included much of his old wardrobe.

I'm old school in that I would like to see the person on the rung below Robert get the position.. as long as they have the capacity - I believe this is Ben.IMO, Alec Baldwin would make a good host, but I don't believe he would be willing to take Ben's spot in the event Ben moves up to Robert's vacated position. Or heck.. maybe he would - surprise me!Should Alec (or another) move into Robert's slot in lieu of Ben, I would feel empathy for Ben as if he were ignored. Then again, maybe Ben is happy where he is and wouldn't be bothered at all should TCM place another in Robert's place. Ben's got a pretty good gig there.
I don't have any problem with either host, and cannot say I agree with the general consensus on this matter. There will always be new viewers.
As per your post, this potential situation reminds me of when Johnny Carson retired and Jay Leno was promoted to the position of full-time host. Boy, was David Letterman angry.

How many of y'all remember Gleason's 1986 MasterCard commercial? Someone put it up on YouTube. I suspect it was filmed at a car dealership near where Gleason lived in Ft. Lauderdale.
Maybe sometime TCM can air the 1950 color movie where Gleason co-starred with Rock Hudson in supporting roles. It would be quite all right if TCM could find "THE DESERT HAWK". I've never seen it.
I do, he kind of growled as he said "Mastercard, master the possibilities". I didn't even need to see the youtube clip, but I probably will anyway.
Anyhow I see that he lived in Ft Lauderdale during the time period that our family was watching his 1950s show on local TV in that area. In fact, I distinctly remember the local news there reporting on an estate sale he was having in that area, though he was still alive and lived about a few more years. Perhaps the episodes of The Jackie Gleason Show being shown there in the Ft Lauderdale area at that time were from his personal collection? Hmm I hope they still exist.

I wasn't clear; when the man wrote the book he wasn't a kid. He was a kid during those studio years but he wrote the book decades after that and the entire focus of the book is on that period of his life and his first job (and what a job it was delivering the mail to the stars and other duties on the WB lot). I suspect that most people that have off-hand relationships with celebrities tend to add some hype to their stories. Their publishers demand it!
All is well, I understood what you meant.
I was just thinking of an unsavory "Hollywood Biographer" or two who I won't mention on here. It wasn't this guy, I know that much. WB is one of the major studios that I haven't read up on. Sounds like it could be a good read. -
Surprised TCM hasn't rerun the whole Bowery Boys series. They are about to rerun Bomba, which also cycled through a few years ago.
I was kind of hoping they would get a few other long-running series from Columbia for Saturday morning, like BLONDIE which I don't think has ever aired on TCM (it did air on the old AMC).
Blondie would be cool to see. I could go for the Bowery Boys too, since I missed that series the last time around.

MovieCollector--
Maybe re-check May 2009. According to my records, that is when Sean Connery was Star of the Month. It is quite likely DARBY O'GILL did air back then. You may have it misspelled, or perhaps there was a schedule change at the last minute, explaining why it is not coming up for you...
Hi, I have looked through it every which way that makes sense, and it is just not there. I even went through the original text files, and they are true to my TCM table. (I reconciled the data a number of different ways after I imported it just to make sure.) I cannot say for sure that it never played on those dates, there might have been a last minute change or substitution.
-
Thank you MovieCollector. Since DARBY O'GILL is coming up tomorrow, any info on when that last aired? I don't think it's a premiere but it has not aired recently.
Tomorrow is the only match I have (since 2003). It is a Disney film...

A lot of the 'offended' ones are over-reactionary, trying to posture to get attention. The films get kicked around and taken way out of context. And let's say the offenses are legitimate, erasing history (and cinema) is not the answer.
In fact, a film like SONG OF THE SOUTH should be in a museum played on an endless loop, where people can see it and lectures can be given about the various meanings and why it means something historically.
I'm with TopBilled on this. No reason to rewrite our history.

A few years ago, TCM aired one Bowery Boys film every Saturday morning. It took almost a whole year-- 48 weeks, but they eventually made it through the entire series. Soon afterward, the titles were all released on DVD thru the Warners Archives. Since that time, an occasional Bowery Boys film will return to TCM's schedule, but not very often.
Cool, it's good to see they are keeping it alive. It looks like a much better product than the set of 1st generation DVDs I got, which were produced by some fly-by-night off-brand. Looks like I just missed the WB release.
-
The earlier "Dead End Kid" movies were closer to JD films (but nowhere near that of James Dean), and the later Bowery Boys ones were more comedy team, along the lines of something like Abbott and Costello I would say.
There are some people who prefer Bowery Boys movies that were made in the mid 50s to the earlier ones, but the mid-50s ones are the hardest to find. The others are generally available on DVD, last time I looked.
I haven't seen this one yet, but recorded it. It is one of the harder to find ones.
-
For anyone that is a fan of WB stars and supporting players from the late 30s until the early 40s the book is interesting. Of course how much we should believe the stories of this 20 year old kid is questionable (hey, I'm not saying he would lie but just that he might of embellished a little). Either way some great stories. Some of the story lines are worth the price of admission; e.g. how I knew Bette Davis wasn't a natural blonde!
I wouldn't think any less of an author that is younger. When you read it, just keep that in mind. I'll keep my eyes open for it. I do have a problem with pathological liars that write books though.

Can you let me know the last time THE BIG CLOCK (1948) aired...? It's coming up tomorrow, and I swear it has been at least five years since we saw it on TCM.
And regarding Nipkow's request for the short 'Our Old Car,' it is included in its entirety in THE GREAT MORGAN. So maybe you can let Nipkow know how frequently THE GREAT MORGAN has aired.
Sure, here are the past airings of The Big Clock (1948)

And here are the airings for The Great Morgan (1946)
2003-06 2004-07 2006-06 2011-04 2014-06
sorry for the formatting, that is how it copies and pastes from an exported Excel sheet.
p.s. I am showing 2002 for some dates, but cannot rule movies out for that year as 2002 is an incomplete year in my listings.

In the 80s, lost episodes of The Honeymooners were broadcast for the first time in many years.
I remember that too, but with The Honeymooners you are always looking at a single backdrop wall. The Jackie Gleason show had a complete stage and band, with a few different sets. Check my post a few posts below where I added a couple links. I saw this played on local TV in South FL (Palm Beach/Ft Lauderdale/Miami area) in the early/mid 1980s. My parents and grandparents remembered it and never missed an episode when we were with them. Now seeing this for the first time after all these years. I wonder how much of that has survived since the 80s. That was mostly from the 50s in B&W, and should at least be on film somewhere...
BTW you are right about Gigot. Its first and only showing on TCM was Feb 2014

Gleason also was featured in a slightly bigger role in the 1941 Bogie film All Through the Night. One can see some of his comic spark in that role. He is also mentioned in the book Those Crazy Wonderful Years When We Ran Warner Bros by Stuart Jerome but not in a flattering way. Jerome was an office boy at the studio and Gleason used the kids to get his booze or to hide the fact he was drinking on the job.
I might check that book out, to read about some of the other WB stars too.
-
I like Gleason and his acting, but I don't like any film I've seen of his.
THE HUSTLER is SOOOoooooo boring! Just two hours of Paul Newman saying, "I can beat Fats... I know I can beat him.... I'm the best.... I can take Fats..... I can win..... blah, blah, blah, blah"
Not even Smokey And The Bandit?
