  1. Fanny (1961) fits some of your criteria, except for it being in France.  Shown in Feb of 2009.  I looked at the occurrences of Georgy Girl ten years ago (+/- a few years or so) in my records.  This one was titled with a name (a person's name) and had Georgy Girl nearby, actually it was shown right after Georgy Girl.

Thanks MCOH, I'm going to have to add Videoredo, Handbrake, and Avidemux to my little arsenal of video capture and editing utilities.
I started using Bandicam a few years ago. It isn't freeware, but for what it does isn't all that expensive.
The outfit who make and control it make periodic improvements to keep it up-to-date and the free updates are part of the package. Software is restricted to individual PCs, but additional licenses for the same person are pretty cheap. I have been pretty satisfied. Are you familiar with with it?

I'm not familiar with Bandicam, but I'll at least have a look.

Handbrake and Videoredo sounds like really cool programs to have.
I usually record on-line streaming programs with Bandicam. I can set it to record a single program, or if it's a continuous stream of programs I can set it to record longer, or just continue recording, depending on how much hard drive space I want to use up.
I can then "edit" what I've recorded with other programs that cut & splice (like Bandicut) or programs that allow me to remove songs and other audio that I may want to separate, or even format a movie to burn a video DVD (which I seldom do anymore).
Some of this stuff is freeware, and some you have to purchase, but for guys like us, it's a way to keep feeding the habit.

Videoredo is a bit different from any other editor I have seen, as it is more convenient for things like cutting, splicing, and compressing (very gently imperceptible compression in my case).  It can also convert from one format to another.  The biggest benefit it has over all the others is a batch scheduler.  You make all your cuts, joins, edits, conversions, etc, then click "add to batch", and it will store it for later.  That allows you to schedule an unlimited amount of file operations, start it and leave, then come back later and have it all done.  It also repairs errors caused by dropped packets and missing frames, if you do a full recode.

Handbrake is freeware.  It does some things Videoredo can't do, and also some other things Videoredo can.  In particular I have only used it for framerate conversion or to edit VBR files (variable bitrate), which I don't think Videoredo can handle.  VBR is something you see on Youtube videos for instance.  I use a simpler program called Avidemux for to do edits on those - just simple cuts.  It also has a Linux version, which is convenient for me, since all my internet-facing computers are Linux operating system.  Handbrake has a Linux version too.  The only one that doesn't is Videoredo, but that is just a programmer choice.  All the tools necessary already exist in Linux, they could just port it over if they wanted to.

Gosh Jimmy, the theme thing is what TCM programmers do best. How else can they keep recycling the same movies over and over if not by creating different themes for us to re-watch the same-o, again and again...
Of course when TCM plays something that I don't feel like rewatching it's like a big commercial break so I can go to the bathroom, take along shower, or soak in the tub. Get out of the house, exercise, shop, or socialize with other human beings. So it's all good to me.
What does burn me is when TCM screws up their ON-DEMAND programming, or streams a movie in tiny, little "Window-Box" format. But heck, in all of our lives a little rain must fall, and in some drought ridden parts of the country that ain't such a bad thing, is it? ;):)

Well I had my first experience with "On Demand", or at least think so.

For whatever reason I didn't schedule a movie to record on my Directv DVR.  Then the movie came on as I was watching TV.  About halfway through I realized it wasn't recording.  So I plugged in the network cable and "rewound" the movie.  (If Directv is on the same program, you can go back to the start and watch it by streaming.)

I got through that ok and recorded it offline (their DVR won't allow you to record the prior [streamed] part of a partially aired movie).  The only issue was that there was a few minutes at the end that didn't make it.  Forunately I had the next program recording as well.  So it was a matter of capturing the two sections and then getting them pasted together into one movie.

Not so simple, as the streaming was recorded at 24 fps and the ordinary satellite feed at the normal 30 fps (or to be more correct 29.9).  There were therefore two different sections with two different frame rates.  So I took the smaller 30 fps section that got chopped off at the hour, ran it through Handbrake (a program that can change framerates), and then joined it with my usual program (Videoredo).

[I must add though that certain defaults for Handbrake MUST be changed:  don't allow it to crop the image, and be sure to save it to the format you are using.  It was written by a finicky French guy who "really" wants others to do things his way.   Which in my case wouldn't have worked correctly.

I was also surprised that TCM ran (at least one - I only checked out BLONDIE) those awful extended-length previews of the features before the main title. Those were originally done as time fillers by King Features Syndicate since stations needed to either filll-to or cut-to 72 minutes for a 90 minute time slot back in the 70's. The network could have easily excised those as they were totally inartful and superfluous.

It might sound silly, but those King Features Syndicate bookends even bring back memories for me.  It would be nice to have everything original though.

What, if any, affect will the ATT - Time Warner merger (Should it happen) have on TCM?

Well AT&T purchased Directv a few years ago, and that is still working.  In fact, shortly after the purchase, I noticed there was a day where they moved a new satellite into place while they moved an old one out, with almost no down time for their customers.  The new satellite was put into place for higher bandwidth technologies or just more channels going into the future (they are now 4K-compatible).  That was just one instance that I know of.  Also they continue to add HD TV channels and music channels to Directv.  None of this would be necessary for streaming.

AT&T has another platform called "Uverse", which is based around a high speed fiber optic cable.  That is generally only used around major metropolitan areas, but not in rural areas, or even the suburban areas near me.  That will still be used.  New Uverse installs will be deprecated though, except for areas where the satellite line of view would be obstructed by...you guessed it...tall buildings (or trees in metro areas).  So they are keeping both of those platforms and continuing to use them both, but for new installs they are giving preferential treatment to the satellite service where there would be a choice.

AT&T doesn't have anything like TCM, so I'd imagine they will leave it intact.

Customer service for Directv since the AT&T aquisition has taken a nosedive I hear.  I have no firsthand experience with it yet though.

  7. If they completely moved to streaming, they'd just be downsizing.  Then someone else would rise up and take their place.  All you need to do is read about the problems associated with streaming in the problems forum to see it is mostly wishful thinking at this point.  There's only so much they can do with their social media platforms.  At the end of the day this smells more like wishful thinking and overzealous marketing than anything else.

  8. All hands on deck for tonight's Blondie marathon...check
    no conflicting plans...check
    all DVRs ready to go...check
line power in good condition, haven't had any recent outages...check
no storms in the forseeable forcast...check

Not exactly a pre-flight checklist, but it's the next best thing, I'm not going to be flying any aircraft.  What could possibly go wrong.  ninja.gif

  9. That's kind of a big deal I suppose.  But it's only a cartoon, so no need to adjust the storyline as Bart and Lisa have kids, Maggie grows zits as a baby, and Homer and Marge grow old and gray.  Or alternately Bart grows up to be a MGTOW, Lisa runs off and joins Wikileaks, and Maggie grows up as a Millenial (or thereabout).

We (the prolific imdb reviewers) told the imdb staff to do what you suggest. But no, that which can be monetized is in,  good prose is devalued, and they simply do not care. Exhibit A - eliminating the imdb message boards and just telling everybody "to paste on facebook". The message boards are not something that can be monetized. Col Needham himself, in his New Year's post that his prime goal at imdb was to "invent advertising our customers will love". LOL. I delete their distracting advertising from my view every time I go there.

You think the Body Snatchers got him?

It is most noticeable in newer films where someone on mobile will write: "Gr8T Film! C it Or Die!" or something almost that trite. That takes hardly more energy to write than just to vote for a film. It's an attempt to get more participation from mobile users, and ultimately sell tickets through imdb at the expense of the integrity of their database which Needham, imdb's founder, could really care less about.

I think Needham is just doing what he is told.  I have the highest level of respect for the actual IMDB staff.  It is a shame they combined the cell phone chatter with the actual reviews - that cheapens other people's hard work and the time they took to post.  There should have been a new section and a new database field for that.

P.S. It's not too late for them to fix that.  It would be super-easy.  Just split them at the old length requirements.  Any reviews equal or longer than nnnn characters stays in the review section, anything shorter gets moved.  Then reinstate the former requirements to actually post a review.  Cell phone chatter is displayed/tabulated separately.  Done deal.  The whole thing would be transparent to cell phone chatter posters, who wouldn't care less either way.

  13. 1 hour ago, calvinnme said:

That's an interesting list. It's a good thing you capped it by date, because imdb has started letting people write tiny reviews that require little or no effort. Thus "The Last Jedi" has 4987 reviews already. Why bother writing a review for a film that has almost 5000 reviews? Nobody will ever see it.

The tiny reviews bit must part of their initiative to game their own system and bump "less informative" reviews to the bottom of the search results, presumably to sell more movies (even ones that don't exist).  I haven't been paying much attention to their minutiae lately...wasn't even aware they had relaxed their standards on posting reviews.  How much of a difference is it?

  14. Getting back - this is a list of some movies from my personal database.  This is a completely separate entity from the TCM Schedules DB I created which I post from each month.

This is most of the entries under Universal Pictures which I thought I might be interested in, which I don't have AND I don't have any record of TCM showing.  I didn't check to see if any are lost.

At least a couple were already mentioned so far.

Due to the raw data dump some of the actor lists get tedious, but I just left them as-is.

DGF was one of my favorite posters. His humor was greatly appreciated, especially in the Off-Topics where it often seems like humor goes to die. I could also talk to him about music more than any other poster, as he had a wide-ranging taste and knowledge of musical genres. And he was a frequent and welcome presence in the Games & Trivia section.

I also miss Kid Dabb, who's now been gone about 17 months, and film lover 293, who's been M.I.A. since early December of last year.

Yes, I have noticed filmlover293 gone as well.

Look back on the history of the boards, we have lost about 95%+ of members.  Few stated they were leaving because of harassment, personal attacks.  Lost many of the original 1995 - 2007 members due to flame wars.

Makes sense.  As a board owner you get what you put into it.

  17. I had to search for this just to find out what it was.  It is from Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus (2009).

Since we are on this topic don't forget 2-Headed Shark Attack (2012)

For the perfect double-header (or is that a triple-header) you will probably want to follow that up with this.

Still one that I have noticed before and at least thought was a funny idea is Sharktopus (2010)

I absolutely love "Anchorman". Maybe you'd have to be a woman breaking into a male dominated industry in the late 70s (I was) to get it. But there are pieces of it that are just so ridiculous it is funny. It was TRYING to be ridiculous.

On the other hand Gigli (2003) is just a stupid movie, IMHO. It was stupid and bad with very stupid dialogue. It was so stupid and bad it broke up the stars, Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez, who had been in a romantic relationship. And the tagline "The violent story about how a criminal lesbian, a tough-guy hitman with a heart of gold, and a mentally challenged man came to be best friends through a hostage." ????  It is actually an object lesson on the value of the studio system, that prevented really embarrassingly bad stuff from being made.  Budget = 54M, USA box office = 6M. I don't think anybody would think of it as a cult film, and it doesn't have the excuse of Manos or "Ring of Terror" or any of the Ed Wood films of being made on the cheap by bad writers, bad directors, and no-name stars, which made the smart remarks in MST3K possible.

See what I mean?  You prove my point.

I never heard of Gigli (2003).

Anyhow it is still an undeveloped idea at this point.

P.S. on The Anchorman, I saw it with a girlfriend when it was new in the theaters.  Most of the people got up and left.  The "remainers" were mostly in their young 20s or younger (mostly younger).  No older adults eventually, well unless you counted the two of us.  We eventually left too.

Some people LOVE movies like Manos, Hands of Fate. I'm one of them. I can get more enjoyment out of one Manos-style trainwreck than a dozen competently made but homogeneous studio movies.

But one can love (or like) a movie and still think it's stupid. And Manos is stupid. As is Ring of Terror. Or Sex Maniac. Or Reefer Madness. Or most (all?) Ed Wood movies.

I was chatting with someone about Reefer Madness as we were lining up our records on past schedules.  I couldn't help notice all the IMDB AKA titles:

Tell Your Children (1936) - original title
    Dope Addict (1938)
    Doped Youth (1938)
    Love Madness (1938)
    Reefer Madness (1936)
    Reefer Madness (1947)
    The Burning Question (1938)

    All titles are in English.
