mrroberts--I'd have liked to see Mitchum take on James Stewart's roles in "The Man Who Knew Too Much" (1956) and "Vertigo" (1958).
-
NickAndNora34--No, I haven't seen "Beware My Lovely" (1952), but I'll look for it after seeing: "The Hitchhiker" (1953)--Film paints heroes as being too nice, but film still packs a punch. William Talman is exceptionally good as a psycho killer. Fine noir cinematography by Nicholas Musuraca, who also filmed "Cat People" (1942), "The Ghost Ship" (1943) "The Seventh Victim" (1943) and many others. Well done low budget thriller. 8.0/10 stars.

Re the post about "Exorcist II: The Heretic" (1977): I've read that there were five different versions in release at one point during the original release. I wonder which one TCM will show? Edit: For the record, I've seen only two versions. SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER One had the bugs; one didn't.

"On Dangerous Ground" (1951)--Character study/noir/thriller/melodrama is underrated--Robert Ryan and Ida Lupino are Excellent in this taut film. Not a wasted gesture or look in the film. Beautiful score by Bernard Herrman, fine noirish cinematography by George Diskant. 8.5/10 stars.

Great Performances That Did Not Win An Oscar
film lover 293 replied to rayban's topic in General Discussions
Julie Harris as Eleanor Vance in "The Haunting" (1963) didn't even get a nomination for Best Actress: Claire Bloom deserved at least a nomination as Best Actress. Russ Tamblyn deserved a nomination for Best Supporting Actor. Edit for jamesjazzguitar and others interested: For Julie Harris' Best Actress nomination, I would subtract Shirley MacLaine's nomination for "Irma La Douce" & add a sixth nomination for Claire Bloom. For Russ Tamblyn's nomination, I would replace Bobby Darin in "Captain Newman, M.D." -
I was a popular singing movie star from the late 30's through the 50's. I was primarily known for combining song with comedy, but was also known for an occasional dramatic role. I worked with some of the film industrys' best: Preston Sturges, Bob Hope, Fred Astaire were just a few of my coworkers. I sang hit songs with more than five different orchestras. Who am I?

"New Orleans" (1947)--Stars Billie Holiday, Louis "Satchmo" Armstrong, bandleader Woody Herman, and I don't know how many other jazz greats. Plot is battle between classical and jazz; in other words, a bunch of nonsense. This was Holidays' only major role in films. When the film concentrates on music, it soars. When Arturo De Cordova and another non-musician are saddled with the task of dragging the plot forward, the film plods at the pace of a drugged elephant. Thankfully, music is almost nonstop. 8/10 stars.

Black and white, or color film? If black and white, "Darling, How Could You!" (1951)?

Thanks, starliteyes: This actress had musicals for two of her first six films, and a song played a major part in one of her first dramatic roles. Please name the films, the songs she performed in each film, and the composers for each film.

"On The Beach" (1959)--"It could happen here" type film about the destruction of the world by nuclear bombs. It seemed an overly serious "message" film when I first saw OTB in the mid 1970's. Now, it does seem the horror story/cautionary film. Performances are all excellent, but this was the year of "Ben-Hur" and nobody was even nominated. Ernest Gold's score Was nominated and should have won, IMHO. The use of the "unofficial" Australian national anthem in the score is incredibly effective, especially if you consider the lyrics that end the song; they aren't heard till near film's end: "And his ghost may be heard, as you pass by that billabong 'Who'll come a-waltzing Matilda with me?' " Film is still capable of giving one a **** of a scare and causing goosebumps. 4 stars out of 4.
