P.S. LawrenceA--I edited my "best of 1990's list to add "Clueless".
Top Ten 2000 films: My list is crazy:
1.) "Scary Movie"--I saw this opening night in my city with a bunch of horror movie addicts, who knew the horror movie cliches and "slasher" movie cliches inside-and out, & were past ready to see a good parody of them. The roof almost was knocked off the the theatre, the laughter was that explosive. SM starts with a sequence parodying the typical "victim #1" and "killer" and doesn't slow down after that. Jokes came fast and furious; most worked, the few that didn't gave me time to breathe. The anticipation and atmosphere can't be re-created, but this is SO an audience movie--especially an audience who/that gets every joke, and can tell you what movie(s) inspired it. I had to beg a friend to come along; I got a free movie and concessions out of it as a bonus (he thought he'd hate it but loved it). One of my favorite nights EVER at the movies. I had to go to two matinees to catch all the lines I'd missed, LOL.
2.) "Best in Show"--Wonderful parody of every dog show that's ever been televised on Animal Planet.
3.) "Billy Elliot"
4.) "The Broken Hearts Club"
5.) "Cast Away"
6.) "Cecil B. Demented"--John Waters film that gets off to a Great start, then goes all to you-know-where and gone, despite Melanie Griffiths' best efforts. The limousine scene was inspired by one of Ginger Rogers' demands, from what I have read.
7.) "Shadow of the Vampire"--Nutso director makes the cast of 1922s' "Nosferatu" go to the Carpathian Mountains to make the film. Star is even crazier--or is he?
8.) "Songcatcher"--Overlooked movie with Beautiful performances, music, and scenery.
9.) "Traffic"
10.) "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon"

A rave review to go with LornaHansonForbes': FGTC is one of Billy Wilders' least known, and one of his top five movies. If you can, see it!
-
1999:
1.) "Dogma"
2.) "Boys Don't Cry"
3.) "The Mummy"
4.) "Fantasia 2000"
5.) "Sleepy Hollow"
6.) "The Talented Mr. Ripley"
7.) "American Beauty"
8.) "The Cider House Rules"
9.) "The Sixth Sense"
10.) "Flawless--Robert De Niro as a cop who's had a stroke & Philip Seymour Hoffman as a drag queen. This lasted two days at the theatre--according to the ticket seller, I was the only person to see the movie. Not a perfect film, but deserved better at the box-office.

LawrenceA--"High Art" stars Ally Sheedy and Radha Mitchell. Mitchells' apartment ceiling develops a crack, so she goes upstairs to neighbor Ally Sheedy's apartment--film develops from there. Main theme of film (I think) is Fame and what it does to people.
"That Old Feeling" is a Bette Midler comedy about divorce and marriage: won't say anything more to spoil it. Carl Reiner directed.
"Velvet Goldmine" is a throwback to the 70's glam rock scene, with a murder mystery included. Directed by Todd Haynes.

Sorry all: been fighting a persistent bug( flu). Anyway. 1995: odd choices, & saw too many stinkers.
1.) "Clueless"
2.) "Dangerous Minds"
3.) "Goldeneye"--Pierce Brosnan is a good Bond, IMHO.
4.) "The Celluloid Closet"
5.) "Sleeping Beauty" (The re-release).
6.) "To Wong Fu, Thanks For Everything, Julie Newmar"--uneven but amusing film.
CAMP find of the year--"The Scarlet Letter"--Demi Moore indulges in what Puritan women weren't even supposed to know about, Gary Oldmans' Reverend has a nude scene(s), & Robert Duvall cavorts wearing a dead deers' head.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------1996: Again, less than ten films: some I saw that year I wouldn't recommend to Anyone
1.) "The Birdcage"--Saw during Presidential campaign--Bob Dole (The Rep. candidate) was born 15 miles from where I saw film. When in last scene of film, a drag queen says "I think Bob Dole is SO Hot", I thought the roof had been blasted off, the line got such a Huge laugh.
2.) "The First Wives Club"
3.) "Joe's Apartment"-How much tastelessness can You stand? Five minute finale that does multiple riffs on MGM musicals makes it worth sitting through--I think.
4.) "Mars Attacks!"--I enjoyed it, critics be darned!
5.) "The Long Kiss Goodnight"--see comment above.

Charming footage of the Horror greats and the cats. Thank you for posting--I never would have run across the footage myself.

LawrenceA--"Poison" is a Todd Haynes film. It's divided into three parts. The first part is about a 8 year old shooting his father. The second part is a short horror film. I think I walked out at this point, and actually exchanged and got a ticket for Kevin Costner's "Robin Hood". RH was okay, but not a Top Ten film, IMHO.
