  1. The marvelous comic/singer Janis Paige is showing more than she realizes--maybe; and sharp-eyed viewers will notice she seems to be proving her Point.

Edit--number is from "Silk Stockings" (1957).  Songs were pre-recorded--I wonder how many takes director Rouben Mamoulian called for before settling on this one?

The song "Stereophonic Sound" is a choice after this song ends--it's not a great copy, but worth watching for Paige's & Astaire's clowning--Number's end was a last minute change from choreographed one, as you can see from reporters' scuttling for safety.

  2. "Unconquered" (1947)--American History 101, as told by director Cecil B. DeMille.  A remarkably good copy on YT, considering it had over 100,000 views--looked more like 10,000.   Film is generally a fun watch, although some of the lines had me rolling my eyes in disbelief (Paulette Goddard as Abby , to Gary Coopers character, who is intent on killing a foe to stop an Indian war: "You haven't blood in your veins--you've gunpowder!!").  Enjoyably silly movie requires Major suspension of disbelief, & an enjoyment of the ridiculous is a big help (Boris Karloff as a British-accented Seneca chieftain, Paulette Goddards' lack of any English accent, although she's playing a native of London, England are just two examples of the films silliness.  Minus the unbearably pompous 3-4 minutes of narration at films' beginning, 7/10 stars.

  3. Does anyone else remember his Razzie winning performance as Worst Supporting Actor & Worst New Star (two awards for one stinker of a film) in "Ghosts Can't Do It" (1990)?  I just saw a clip from that on YT-Donald was awful!  Bo Derek for his wife--they can sweep the Razzies again. :D

  4. Hvbrueelgs is ONLY spamming TCM:

  5. Like the red snow in 1975's "Breakheart Pass", based on Alistair MacLeans book--spam should NOT be eaten OR clicked on, as who knows what nasties the spam posts may contain--CaveGirl, I notify the mods (the "contact us" button), & I do so until spam is Gone.  For the unwary or unprotected (computer-wise), spam is a danger.  JMO.

Edit II--"Snow Falling On Cedars" is a beautifully photographed film, TopBilled.

  6. LornaHansonForbes--"State Fair" (1945) is simplistic in plot, but a musical delight, in spite of Jeanne Crain & Dana Andrews being dubbed.  Whole score is good to excellent, & "It Might As Well Be Spring" won Best Song Oscar, deservedly, IMHO.

"Beyond a Reasonable Doubt" (1956) is a pretty good noir.

"Zero Hour!" (1957) Set the formula for the Airport sequels--I guess it was good in 1957, is cliched now, IMHO.

Can't help with your other highlighted titles--haven't seen them.

  7. Was just reading TCM's article on "State Fair" (1945)--they dubbed Andrews in spite" of him being a trained opera singer"*.  I'd love to hear any recordings Andrews made--I think SF is the only film musical he ever appeared in.  Pity.

*--From TCMs' article on "State Fair" (1945).

  8. Veering off topic--I have spotted four stars & Gene Kellys' brother in the "It" number & the woman who played the Pola Negri  (Vamp) type in Singin' in the Rain (1952)--help, please, in verifying two of the appearances & finding one (the others I'm 75% to 95% sure of):

The tall woman who looks the Pola Negri type (Vamp, all dressed in black satin & a thing with black feathers on her head) who reclines on an orange 20's style couch played the same role in SITR.

The man in orange & white stripes who dances with her is Fred Kelly, Gene Kellys' brother.  Earlier in the film, the two sang & danced to "I Love to Go Swimmin With Wimmen" (I forget what Romberg show that's from.)

Gene Kelly is the extra who takes Ann Millers orange coat & sits on a stool by the bar and Ann Miller drapes her rattling pearls around him in mid-number.

IMDB says Russ Tamblyn is in this number--I think he's the football player in the purple jersey with the # 35 on it--opinions?

The girl in the whitish dress with a big red bow in her hair & red stripe around her skirt I Think is Rita Moreno--opinions?

I Think Donald O'Connor is one of the tall extras waving a mini football flag--can't be sure--opinions?

This song is a mini Singin' in the Rain reunion, LOL.

Thanks in advance for replies. :)

  9. Thursday, Dec. 10th: All times E.S.T.: 2 maybes, 1 miss, & 1 question mark;

7:30 a.m. "None But the Brave" (1965)--Sinatra film I've missed.

11:45 a.m. "Never So Few" (1959)--underrated war film.

                   MISS

9:30 a.m. "The Pride and the Passion" (1957)--Frank and Cary Grant drag a cannon around Europe to no discernable purpose during the Napoleonic Wars.  Sophia Loren also stars.

                       QUESTION MARK

4:30 p.m. "The Extraordinary Seaman" (1969)--Anti-war farce set during WWII--wonderful cast, but read the extended plot summary on films' webpage; film was a Bomb with public & critics.  I'll watch, but I may regret it.

  10. LornaHansonForbes: Set-up; Sinatra's character has just been dumped by his true love.  Sinatra at his best can't be beat, IMHO.  One thing that hasn't been mentioned (if it has I missed it);  he was a master of vocal inflection. He knew instinctively if a line needed a little sarcasm, or a lot--the same with every emotion, it seemed.  He had a talent for not appearing to work, while getting a songs' emotions across.  At his best, he was a genius.

Edit--The final complete Can-Can is among the choices to click on after Franks' song ends.  The quality of that video is SO much better than Comcast's (I don't know about other providers) one can see the qualities director Walter Lang was going after--the viewer almost gets drunk off the music & swirling colors & the quality of the dancing (excepting the little squeals, which are annoying but don't spoil the number, at least not for me).

  11. TomJH--this just gets more & more confusing.  The original soundtrack record  billing is this, according to Amazon: "The Chico Hamilton Quintet & Elmer Bernstein".  On soundtrack collector.com, there are Ten different soundtracks & 13 compilation albums!  The more I read, the more confused I become--this is one of the odder film mysteries I've run across.  Anyone who saw last nights' broadcast of Sweet Smell of Success, please post if you remember a.  Who was billed as composer b. What did the music sound like--was it easy on the ear, or discordant, unpleasant to hear;or c.--the answers to Both a & b would be most appreciated. :)   I'm kicking myself for not watching SSoS again, because I've run into a brick wall without answers to the questions I've posed (insert banging head against brick wall emoticon here, LOL).

  12. LawrenceA--Please stick around--your posts are funny and on target--I also post about movies I've found on other websites & I've never gotten a complaint--If someone complained, they don't understand the title of this thread--TCMModerator1 just said you were fine. I join lafitte & Bogie56 in asking you not to leave.

  13. In "Pal Joey" (1957)--When Sinatra and Kim Novak have spent the night in the same hotel room, & Novak is agonizing over whether she "Did or Didn't" the night before, Sinatra fixes breakfast, fixes a bagel--which the terrier promptly steals, dunks in Novaks' cup of coffee, & tears a good sized hunk off of it--the dog wipes Sinatra & Novak off the screen for 4-5 minutes. :P
