  1. Seems like another trademark of film noir is the technique of opening with a closeup shot that gives only a bit of information about the context, it almost works the opposite way of an establishing shot and definitely sets up the mysterious tone that defines the genre. We saw a similar thing in M, where the scene opens with the children playing ball but we really have no idea where they are or why they are doing it until the scene advances further.
