  1. Good observation. In the movie there were several decades worth of hole coverings including the lovely Raquel Welch poster. I'm reading the original King story it was adapted from called "Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption" and have yet to touch on those details.

    Funny, I immediately thought of this as well, and suddenly I'd understand wanting to have a poster of Rita Hayworth.

    I have GOT to find time to watch Gilda.  Fantastic!

    - Were you surprised by what happens in the opening scene of The Letter?

    -- In what ways can the opening of The Letter be considered an important contribution to the film noir style?

     

    I was very surprised by the opening scene.  I felt the pan shot of everyone retiring for the day was to show the day had ended for the workers and then would end up showing a large house.  Instead there was a loud shot and i reacted like everyone else was that a gun shot?

     

    I was never aware of The Letter being considered a film noir, but i can see now by the opening scene.

    It is very similar to the opening in M.  You seen calm, darkness, then important looks on faces that show anger, sadness, confusion and horror.   Interesting that Betty Davis face never seems to change, so you don't really know what she is feeling.  This scene makes me definitely want to watch the entire film.

     

    This echoes almost exactly my own reaction.  I loved how Davis' face is so impassive, except for the moment of surprise when the moon comes out from behind the clouds and illuminates the scene, and she turns her face up, startled, perhaps angry?  Anyway, I agree, can't wait to watch the entire film.

  3. I think Lang immediately starts off with the unease using that morbid children's song.  And the kids all seem so somber... that, and the little girl is singing and pointing at each child, as if foreshadowing some gruesome end for one or more of them.

    Then there's the darkness, and the contrast of the film.  Visually it's fairly stark and the angles of the stairs and building as the woman carries her basket of laundry up the stairs. 

    I love the use of the shadow as the clip ends.  Ominous and foreboding and not revealing who it is.  Plus the actor's tone of voice, very creepy, almost a wheedling tone "what a pretty ball, and what's your name?"

    I am greatly looking forward to seeing the whole movie.  After I post this, I'm heading up to my DVR to clear space for Friday's movies, as I will be elsewhere on Friday (the cable provider at that location doesn't carry TCM or offer it with my package, but that's what DVR's are for!!)
