  1. Yeah, I'm not planning to record any I haven't seen of these - I remember them all pretty well. Just wasn't sure if I should record all five I haven't seen or not! I'm hoping to get time to watch some on the Watch TCM app while I'm gone, but I don't want to depend on that. I guess I'll record all of them and hope my DVR doesn't explode. My cable guide's description for Tomorrow Is Another Day is: "Lovers go on the lam after she dupes him into thinking he killed her former boyfriend." Well, I've DEFINITELY gotta see that.
  2. I'm going out of town this week so I have to set my DVR for Friday's films tonight. On the schedule, I haven't seen: Danger Signal (1945) Deadline at Dawn (1946) Johnny Angel (1946) The Gangster (1947) Tomorrow is Another Day (1951) And I know nothing about any of them! Which should I prioritize? So this post is helpful for others as well, here are the ones I'd prioritize of the ones I have seen: Laura (1944) - one of the most romantic noirs there is Murder, My Sweet (1944) - lesser known depiction of Philip Marlowe, but definitely worthwhile Detour (1945) - possibly the best B n

I think there are definitely elements that convey creepiness aside from the knowledge we bring to the film - the extreme angles, the dialogue/song the kids are singing, the harsh lines and shadows - but I do think we bring some of it with us. A few people, including myself, have noted the lack of score as ominous, but it's pretty typical of early 1930s films to not have scores, so I'm not sure it's meant to be creepy in this case. The intrusion of very intentional and strident sound effects are, though, I think.
  4. Forgive me for coming to this late in the day, so if this has been discussed, I apologize! I find the lack of music in the opening of the film ominous, but I wonder if we're supposed to, or if that's something we're projecting to the film from our modern vantage point. Fully-scored sound movies wouldn't become common until 1933's King Kong, and many movies from that era lack non-diagetic music. In fact, M's use of ambient sound like cars passing in the street is kind of groundbreaking, but it's interesting that even there, Lang doesn't use ambient sound that necessarily sounds believable t
