  1. What makes this scene so horrific and suspenseful? Many things have already been suggested at this forum. I think dread is also conceived by the crosscutting between the mother at home and the girl leaving school. The knowledge that a child murderer is roaming the streets, fills the apparently innocent image of the working mother with fear. The same goes even more for the image of the girl leaving school unattended. Apparently, the mother has to work so hard that she cannot pick up the girl herself; and where is the father?
