  1. Does anyone remember if the earlier version, with Jeanne Eagles, opens the same way? I saw it last summer, but don't remember the opening. I disagree that the opening shots set up tranquility and languor. As others have pointed out, the sound of the rubber sap dripping creates tension, as do shots of the moon. And it is a classic trope in Western culture to portray "exotic" (meaning non-white or non-European) locales as either sinister or "inscrutable."
