  1. He's was super as Diamond Jim Brady in the 1935 movie by the same name. And he was also good in Come and Get It, You Can't Take it with You, Lillian Russell and The Hucksters .
  2. I can't think of one right now, but I do think overall The Strawberry Blond was better, though I love Coop. :-) Message was edited by: georgiegirl because I had it azz backwards! Doh!
  3. Hello. If I remember, she played Elizabeth Taylor's mother in Butterfield 8 . I've always enjoyed her performances in films. Wasn't she also in a film with Rita Hayworth, as the mother of Rita's lover who gives testimony against her son who's charged with Rita's husband's murder? I have to go look that one up.
  4. 3-2-1! lol That was quick! Yep, Miss Parker it is. :-)
  5. Ya' know, you guys are just so great! I am always so impressed. Thank you very much. :-) I am not into foreign films but that one just grabbed me and wouldn't let me go. The thread on Latinos in movies made me think of this one. Well, all but the title. ;-)
  6. Okay, are you some kind of movie fan psychic?! lol I saw you on the other thread with someone looking for a title and wham! lol Oops, yes, it's Miss Jane. Let's see how long it takes you for this one. 10-9-8-7-6-5-4...
  7. I don't blame you, sometimes it's safer to lurk than post around here. lol Nope, not Lynn Bari, so it's clue time. This woman is NOT a shadow of her former self. ;-)
  8. There was a movie about a little boy who lives in a monastery, I believe in Mexico. He climbs stairs to an upper room and talks to a statue of Jesus that comes to life. I don't remember if it was subtitled or not. I hope that's enough info to trigger your memory.
  9. Hello and welcome on board. I'm glad you're having a good time here, and I'm astounded and honored you went all the way through to the beginning. :-) There really are amazing people on this thread and they keep me on my toes! I can't fool them for one minute. I had to cheat to do that. lol Anyway, nope, not Miss O'Hara but feel free to guess again, and if you have a pic you'd like to post and try to stump us, feel free to jump in. . :-)

  11. I very rarely see Cassanova Brown . I loved him in that with Teresa Wright. Their chemistry is right on the money, just as it was in Pride of the Yankees the prior year. That is one of my favorite movies among the many I have. :-)
  12. Hi, Midge! Judging by your number of posts you're new here so welcome, but nope, not Barbara Hale. :-)
  13. > {quote:title=eanm wrote:}{quote} > I did not mean it that way > sorry you thought I was questioning someone's word I didn't think you meant it that way, I didn't either. lol I just wanted to clarify I wasn't. Got that? lol
  14. I wasn't questioning any one's word on their ethnicity, I was just surprised. I had no idea. lol
  15. > {quote:title=HollywoodGolightly wrote:}{quote} > Just to play devil's advocate for a minute, there were quite a few non-U.S.-born actors who were doing quite nicely in the silent era, until sound came along. Should Hollywood be to blame for the fact that audiences wouldn't accept certain accents once talkies become the norm? Garbo did okay with her accent, as did Gilbert Roland, Joseph Schildkraut and many others, so.. Of course 'we the people' were to blame, too, but the studios were so powerful they could have played a major part in turning it all around long ago. They had a hand in perpetuating the bigotry and the myths of certain ethnic groups. It wasn't until I was an adult that the race, religion or creed of any actor crossed my mind. To me they were images on a screen and the characters they portrayed, as long as they were white. If they wore some other mask, it just didn't feel right and made their performance less enjoyable to me.
  16. I find it an insult to my intelligence in most cases. Warner Oland playing Charlie Chan, along with Brando, Hepburn and many others who played Asian was bizarre to me. From my earliest recollections as a movie lover, I never understood it, though my mother tried to explain. Spencer Tracey playing Portuguese I could live with, but Charleton Heston as a Mexican was another story. If nothing else, most whites playing ethnic roles gave me a good laugh at just how ridiculous they and the studios looked. The obvious bigotry in Hollywood is right there on the screen for all to see, and is often a sorry reminder of the way it was, but it's also a reminder of just how far we've come as a society.
  17. > {quote:title=HollywoodGolightly wrote:}{quote} > Someone like Rita Hayworth, on the other hand, seemed to make big it after being scrubbed of any obvious ethnicity. Other Latinos were, as far as I can tell, not generally regarded as such, including Margaret O'Brien and Yvette Mimieux, to name just a couple. Did I misunderstand? Are you saying Margaret O'Brien and Yvette Mimieux are Latinos? :-)
  18. Humph! I saw your name on the GD main page and was like, shoot! I hunting I will go. lol Yeah, Janet Leigh! :-)
  19. I hope Lombard found what he/she was looking for and is satisfied with our suggestions, so let the game continue. We're looking for the name of the blonde.
