Best Movie Depictions of True Stories
georgiegirl replied to Poinciana's topic in General Discussions
The first one that came to my mind, The Fighting Sullivans . My favorite genre in books and movies are bios and this is one of my favorite movies. I could list a bunch more, but I'll spare you. I don't believe any family, other than the Carsons during the Civil War, has sacrifice as much as the Sullivans and done it with such a quiet grace and dignity. -

Jane Froman or Lillian Roth? -
Yeah, I wasn't a big fan of the Mame remake; I adore Roz Russell, but Bea sure did steal the show from Lucy. As much as I love Lucy, it was not one of her better roles. Fair to middlin at best. The show Maude was breakthrough TV. Maude touched on subjects no one dared talk about, and Bea was my favorite Golden Girl. Damn cancer! :-(

There were a few good one made here and there since. No? lol

I'm sorry. I was off getting a pic to attach to my post when you posted this one about Bea. I asked the WebAdmin to delete mine. I like this picture of Bea. I enjoyed her since Maude . There was no one like her on TV in those days.

I said this once before on this message board, the bad guys have their stories told more times than the good ones and folks flock to the theaters to see them. I doubt any of his victims will lay down their coins, what's left of them, to see this man's story.

I liked The Road to Ruin , better. I'd seen it ages ago but forgot the subjects it touched on for it's time. I wonder if the codes hadn't been put into affect, where movies would be today. lol

No, no Leave Her to Heaven , that's for sure, but pretty good. Leave Her to Heaven is one of my faves. Beauty was never uglier in a movie. I'd give my right arm to look like Gene Tierney, and give my left arm to have Cornel Wilde as my lover. :-)

Hahahahahaaha! You're like a cat sitting outside a mouse hole waiting for the mouse to poke its head out so you can pounce on it. lol Some of the celebs, unless it's a pic as a baby, which I never find, look a lot like their adult self and that's true of Dorothy Lamour. -

Ya' know, I'm probably old enough to be your mother, and if I were, I'd send you to your room for being such a smarty pants and making my life here miserable! lol Just kidding! You are too much and one of the reasons for me cheating and using family pics just to stump you guys! lol Okay, I have to go off and replenish my stash! I hope someone comes along and posts one. :-) -
I think we need to take into consideration the times. In 1939 there was no TV and the studios cranked those movies out one after the other because of supply and demand. The actors were very professional and well prepared, there were no independent film makers, the studios, in such deep competition, took great pride in their work because the studio heads' names were attached. Movies were America's main source of entertainment, other than radio. Having no competition (none of the modern day movies sources we have today), you'd think the studio could have produced junk without fear the masses would cease to flood the theaters having no alternatives, but they didn't. They had a lot of integrity and were really guided by their own morality, and that of the public's in those days. The movies back then weren't really aimed a young audience, and I think that's who's targeted today, so there are fewer 'classics' being made because unless it's basically toilette bowl humor, bloody or sexually charged, few are interested in the contents or the message a movie may have to send. I don't mean to demean the newest generation of movie goers and lovers, and I know there are plenty of kids out there who appreciate what we 'older folks' would consider a classic movie, but I really don't think that is the norm among toady's youth who are laying down the big money for those tickets. I really don't know the stats on who is buying the tickets; it's an assumption on my part. I haven't been to a movie since the first Jurassic Park . I get to watch the newer movies when they come to TV and I can't think of one I would say I've seen that is bound to join the rank of 'movie classic' . Except maybe Disney's Enchanted. I loved that movie! lol Message was edited by: georgiegirl
