The First Film That Comes to Mind...

Oops, read that as corpse and said Arsenic and Old Lace lol Okay, The Bramble Bush nw-clicking Message was edited by: georgiegirl -
Yeah, my mom was the one who got me into the old movies. By the time I was five I had more old movies under my belt than nursery rhymes. :-) I have two older sisters, and though they like the old movies, I was the one Mom passed that love of movies gene down to. My grandmother loved the movies as well and she was around long before there were real/reel movies, never mind talkies. My grandfather played the music for the silent films and was the entertainment for the change over from reel to reel when they came along later. My favorite memories of my mom, me and the movies, aside from our late nights with The Late Shows, was our annual holiday romp to Radio City and then over to 42nd Street for Chinese food. That started when I was three and went on well into my twenties. My great grandfather had a hand in painting the Michelangelo-esque ceiling that used to grace the old RKO Theater, which originally was Pike?s Opera House. Yes, I love the movies, it?s in my genes. :-)

No, channel 13 in New York carried "Matinee at the Bijou" back in the 60s. The link to the theme song on You Tube is a later version of the original on 13, but pretty close to it. I haven't found one of the original for that, or the Late Show and Million Dollar Movie, but like the one for M@B, they were close enough to jog the memories for me and I hope others. I should go to the Museum of Television and Radio and check it out. I'm sure they have all the old intros to the earlier episodes of the aforementioned shows. I haven't heard about Debbie Reynolds hosting a new M@B, but that's cool! Okay, so what's the answer to the trivia question? lol

The First Film That Comes to Mind...

I had no idea what an angler fish is. The first thing that came to my mind was angling and I thought of the priest, Ward Bond, fishing in The Quiet Man . Seeing your question, I went online and looked up angler fish. No, I guess there wasn't one in the movie, but who knows, we never saw the fish the priest was angling for, so... lol -

I can't get enough of the old movies, so why stop at two? lol What really gets me is, if a person only gets network TV, unless PBS is showing an oldie but goodie late Saturday night, no one else is showing them down the lower end of the dial. To think CBS and WOR, who gave us the The Late Shows and the Million Dollar Movie, have never looked back and thought about resurrecting the old classic movies for those who don't get cable. They were the pioneers at one time.

The Golden Age of Hollywood Bloopers!
georgiegirl replied to georgiegirl's topic in General Discussions
GWTW-Well, I don't know. It may take a little time to download but give it a try. You can always cancel out if it takes too long. They're really worth watching if you like the old time celebs like Garfield, Cagney, OBrian, Bogey, Robinson. They're just being themselves which is a lot of fun to watch them mess up and laugh or get mad at themselves. lol -
Musical Novelty-You are absolutely right, "Matinee at the Bijou". The only difference between you and me, however, I was watching it in the 60s. lol You would think PBS would bring up that old show during pledge week! lol You should get a kick out of this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aU3PI5C0_a4

Cine Maven-5th generation New Yawker. lol I?m sure your family thought the last lighted window on the The Late Late Late Late Show was yours. lol My mother introduced me to the classics before I could talk. I watched "Mighty Joe Young" so many times on Million Dollar Movie my older sisters one day pleaded with my mom to make me turn the TV over to them. At the time most homes had only one TV. How did we ever survive sibling rivalry back then? lol You may get a kick out of these: Enjoy! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AySMIs7iozc http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wnX00UuHJFA&NR=1 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=asO97gdn2oo&feature=related

For you die hard movie lovers, if you haven't seen these, treat yourself. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nJuRVn2EIMM I've watched these time and again for a good laugh at some old friends. :-)

"NO TIME FOR LOVE" (1943) - TCM Premiere 2/15
georgiegirl replied to Film_Fatale's topic in General Discussions
If you get a chance watch "The Egg and I". It's one of my favorite Fred and Claudette movies. Ma and Pa Kettle were introduced in that film and they are two of my favorite movie characters. And you were right about the tunnel. If you look at the synop on the first post of this thread, it's all there. Good call! -
Close Encounters of the Celebrity Kind...
georgiegirl replied to georgiegirl's topic in General Discussions
CineSage-Wow! That is some list! I would loved to have met or seen in person Jimmy Stewart, Kirk Douglas, Margaret OBrien, Sidney Potier, Burt Lancaster, Robert Wise, James Whitmore, who I'm sure you know just passed away last week, James Doohan and a few others. But overall a most impressive list of names. Thank you for responding to my questions. I thought a lot more people would have jumped on board and told their celeb/celebs tale. I don't know why I thought that, I just did for some reason. lol Two years ago I met an oldie from the Golden Age. He was seated at a table in the lobby of the theater he performed and meeting and greeting folks at the end of his performance. I purchased a CD he was selling and waited on line to have him autograph it for me to give to my cousin who shelled out 80 dollars for me to see this guy's show. As he was signing the CD, I reached out to touch his arm to get his attention and tell him how much pleasure he'd given me over the years of watching his movies. Suddenly, using great force and uttering a barrage of foul words, with his forearm he pushed my arm away. Needless to say, I was totally embarrassed and left the theater humiliated by his unkind words and gesture. His wife all but had to subdue him! She hushed him and she profusely apologized to me. The next day I had a huge black and blue on my forearm where he hit me with his. To say the least, I'll never forget that encounter with a celeb. lol But all-in-all, I've had others but they very pleasant. lol -
Close Encounters of the Celebrity Kind...

Okay, no one has had a close encounter with a celeb of yesteryear, nor is family or friend, but how about any of the new Hollywood stars, say since the 1950s? -

Don't see why you can't churn the butter in the house whilst watching TV. No excuse in this age of technology to miss a word on the old cathode. Not even during a cattle drive to the rail yard. -

I don't understand getting into battles over stuff, but whatever. I still see a difference and not only in the period of movies played but also in the format in the way movies were played a while back. What I've noticed is the old movies use to play through the day and night, now the really early decade ones are mostly on about day break when the older generation is rising, and as the day progresses the movies get into the later decades. Has anyone else noticed this trend? -
*Okay, anyone here ever have a close encounter with a celeb of yesteryear?* *Or are you family or friend of any of those from the Golden Age of Hollywood?*

I'll give you "To Kill A Mockingbird" one of my all time favorite movies and books, but the rest, uh, not so much. lol I liked most of the others, but no where near what I'd call movies of the Golden Age of Hollywood. -
"Let No Man Write My Epitaph" Rosalind Russell Oops! Ignore me. I went wrong somewhere and tried to delete this post but no go, sorry. Message was edited by: georgiegirl

Ugh! AMC! I contributed to them when they asked years ago for support in saving old films, then they went and got all new classic! And now they've got commercials. Don't get me wrong, there were many good movies made since the 60s, and up to today, but I was there for them on the first go round, so...lol I adore the clothes, the cars, oh just everything from the earlier part of the 20th Century. My mother always said I was born to the wrong decade. lol Anyway, if TCM ever does go all modern classics on us, I'll be the first on line to storm the gates in, uh, wherever the headquarters is. lol
