Musical Novelty-You are absolutely right, "Matinee at the Bijou". The only difference between you and me, however, I was watching it in the 60s. lol You would think PBS would bring up that old show during pledge week! lol
You should get a kick out of this one:

Cine Maven-5th generation New Yawker. lol
I?m sure your family thought the last lighted window on the The Late Late Late Late Show was yours. lol My mother introduced me to the classics before I could talk.
I watched "Mighty Joe Young" so many times on Million Dollar Movie my older sisters one day pleaded with my mom to make me turn the TV over to them. At the time most homes had only one TV. How did we ever survive sibling rivalry back then? lol
You may get a kick out of these: Enjoy!

For you die hard movie lovers, if you haven't seen these, treat yourself.

I've watched these time and again for a good laugh at some old friends. :-)

Anyone remember "The Late Show, The Late Late Show, The Late Late Late Show and The Late Late Late Late Show that showed old movies until the wee wee hours of the morning?
Or how about PBS's" Night at the Bijou" or the "Million Dollar Movie" that showed the same old movie over and over all day? :-)

If you get a chance watch "The Egg and I". It's one of my favorite Fred and Claudette movies. Ma and Pa Kettle were introduced in that film and they are two of my favorite movie characters.
And you were right about the tunnel. If you look at the synop on the first post of this thread, it's all there. Good call!

CineSage-Wow! That is some list! I would loved to have met or seen in person Jimmy Stewart, Kirk Douglas, Margaret OBrien, Sidney Potier, Burt Lancaster, Robert Wise, James Whitmore, who I'm sure you know just passed away last week, James Doohan and a few others. But overall a most impressive list of names.
Thank you for responding to my questions. I thought a lot more people would have jumped on board and told their celeb/celebs tale. I don't know why I thought that, I just did for some reason. lol
Two years ago I met an oldie from the Golden Age. He was seated at a table in the lobby of the theater he performed and meeting and greeting folks at the end of his performance. I purchased a CD he was selling and waited on line to have him autograph it for me to give to my cousin who shelled out 80 dollars for me to see this guy's show. As he was signing the CD, I reached out to touch his arm to get his attention and tell him how much pleasure he'd given me over the years of watching his movies. Suddenly, using great force and uttering a barrage of foul words, with his forearm he pushed my arm away. Needless to say, I was totally embarrassed and left the theater humiliated by his unkind words and gesture. His wife all but had to subdue him! She hushed him and she profusely apologized to me. The next day I had a huge black and blue on my forearm where he hit me with his. To say the least, I'll never forget that encounter with a celeb. lol
But all-in-all, I've had others but they very pleasant. lol
-
Okay, no one has had a close encounter with a celeb of yesteryear, nor is family or friend, but how about any of the new Hollywood stars, say since the 1950s?
-
Don't see why you can't churn the butter in the house whilst watching TV.
No excuse in this age of technology to miss a word on the old cathode. Not even during a cattle drive to the rail yard.

I don't understand getting into battles over stuff, but whatever. I still see a difference and not only in the period of movies played but also in the format in the way movies were played a while back.
What I've noticed is the old movies use to play through the day and night, now the really early decade ones are mostly on about day break when the older generation is rising, and as the day progresses the movies get into the later decades. Has anyone else noticed this trend?

*Okay, anyone here ever have a close encounter with a celeb of yesteryear?*
*Or are you family or friend of any of those from the Golden Age of Hollywood?*
-
I'll give you "To Kill A Mockingbird" one of my all time favorite movies and books, but the rest, uh, not so much. lol
I liked most of the others, but no where near what I'd call movies of the Golden Age of Hollywood.

"Let No Man Write My Epitaph"
Rosalind Russell
Oops! Ignore me. I went wrong somewhere and tried to delete this post but no go, sorry.

Atlanta! It'd be worth the trek from NY. lol
-
Yeah, I like that idea. The nothing after 1959 movie channel. lol
-
Ugh! AMC! I contributed to them when they asked years ago for support in saving old films, then they went and got all new classic! And now they've got commercials.
Don't get me wrong, there were many good movies made since the 60s, and up to today, but I was there for them on the first go round, so...lol
I adore the clothes, the cars, oh just everything from the earlier part of the 20th Century. My mother always said I was born to the wrong decade. lol
Anyway, if TCM ever does go all modern classics on us, I'll be the first on line to storm the gates in, uh, wherever the headquarters is. lol

Wow, thanks! I can't believe someone went through the trouble to get the numbers on programing. Super! It's just that I'd be so lost without the old movies. I have been an old movie fan since my mom plopped me in front of the TV as a baby. I said, "Klatuu barada nickto" before I could say my own name. Just kidding, but it disturbs me to think the newest so-called classics could ever replace those of the 20s, 30s, 40s, and some of the 50s.

Thanks for the reply.
The recent showing of more recent movies has been going on for a while now, not just lately. I noticed it's been going on for the last few months or more. I've all but stopped watching.
I know Mr. Turner merged with Time Warner in '96 and stepped down as co-chairman, but I thought he still had his fair share of the pie and made some of the company's decisions, but what do I know?
Anyway, I hope after all the hubbub with the Academy Awards these new classics go by the way side and it's back to usual programming, but I think this is a glimpse of things to come.
-
Years ago TBS showed old movies as did TNT, now I see more and more newer movies being shown on TCM! (To me any movie made after the 1950s is new)
Noooooooooooooo! Please tell me Mr. Turner isn't going the same route with TCM as he did with his other two stations. If he does, I'm just gonna sit right down and have myself a real good cry. He's the last hope for the old classic.. I LOVE MY TCM THE WAY IT WAS!!!!

Thank you! I'll be sure to watch and to tell my sister it's on. You are really something else. Thanks again!

Hey there, ChipHeartsMovies-Thanks for the welcome, and no problem on the Hey there, Georgie Girl. It goes without saying, I get that all the time and don't mind it one bit. Matter of fact, I liked the movie and the song. It's just some of the songsters singing the phase, in my non-virtual world, that bothers me at times. Some people just can't carry a tune. lol
Hm, that would have been a good idea. I could have bought the tape/DVD and left my sister in agony until Christmas. I could picture her face opening such a gift. lol But, alas and alack, she has the info now and has moved on, but I know she'll be back, so...

CineSage jr- Looking for a hit man! That was funny! I hoped my subject matter was a little catchy and attract attention on such a popular message board, and it did!
Also, I?m part Italian, I have my own connections, but thanks for the offer to whack my big sister. lol
TikiSoo-I thought of that one, too, and thanks for pitching in.
Markfp2-Thank you for the nice welcome, and, yes, driving each other crazy is siblings? jobs.

Classicstarletfan! I don't know if you are male or female, but what human being couldn't use a dose of I LOVE YOU? lol I have no doubt that's the right movie. My sister remembered something in the plot about three friends, but I forgot to list that and yet you nailed it! And I even omitted the word man from my post. lol
I left a message on my sister's answering machine and told her the title and the stars. I was going to be mean and let her suffer a little more and not leave it, but knowing her, this movie has been driving her nuts all day and I didn't want to prolong her agony any longer than necessary. lol Thank you so much! I can?t wait for her to call me back. I knew I?d find the answer here, that?s what TCM is all about.

GWTW-Well, I don't know. It may take a little time to download but give it a try. You can always cancel out if it takes too long. They're really worth watching if you like the old time celebs like Garfield, Cagney, OBrian, Bogey, Robinson. They're just being themselves which is a lot of fun to watch them mess up and laugh or get mad at themselves. lol
