This actor started as a big band musician and singer in the 1950's. He began his acting career working in summer stock and off-Broadway, and found success on Broadway when he replaced the lead actor in a smash Broadway musical whose lead actress recreated her role in the movie version. He won a Tony Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Musical playing the part of the father of an internationally famous family.
Although he has acted on Broadway and films, he will probably be remembered for his 7 time Emmy Award nominated portrayal of the title character in a TV comedy series.
Name this multi-talented actor, name the Broadway musical for which he won a Tony Award, and name the comedy TV series he starred in.

"You Never Can Tell" (1951) Delightful comedy starring Dick Powell and Peggy Dow about an ex-police dog who inherits a fortune, but unfortunately is poisoned, but comes back to earth as a human detective to find his killer and bring the killer to justice.
"Defending Your Life" (1991) A romantic comedy fantasy written, directed and starring Albert Brooks about a man who dies and arrives in the afterlife and has to stand trial in order to justify his life long fears so that he may go ahead with the next phase of his life, otherwise he must go back to earth to do it again. His defense attorney is played by Rip Torn and the opposing attorney is played by Lee Grant. During this procedure Brooks falls in love with Meryl Streep. Truly delightful film with both comedic and dramatic overtones. To me, one of Brooks' best films.
"I Married A Witch" (1942) Veronica Lake is a witch from a long line of witches who have put a curse on a Salem Mass. family and its descendants. In human form Miss Lake falls in love with Fredric March the latest descendant who is engaged and a candidate running for office. The cast includes Susan Hayward as March's fiance, Robert Benchley March's closest friend, the great Cecil Kellaway as Lake's father, who is also a witch, and Robert Warwick (a Preston Sturgess alumnus) as Hayward's father.
"Goodbye Charlie" (1964) A Hollywood writer and womanizer is killed by a jealous husband and returns as a woman. The film stars Debbie Reynolds as the womanizer who returns as a woman, Tony Curtis as his best friend, Walter Matthau as the jealous husband, along with Ellen Burstyn (credited with the name of Ellen McCrea), Joanna Barnes, and Laura Devon as three of Charlie's lovers. The movie is based on the play by George Axelrod, which he directed, and which starred Lauren Bacall and Sydney Chaplin, but was not a success.
"Here Comes Mr. Jordan" (1941) One of my favorite films - A romantic comedy/fantasy about a boxer who mistakenly is brought to heaven before his scheduled time, but is given a second chance back on Earth. Since his body has been cremated, he must be "reincarnated" in another body of his choice. Everything about this movie is wonderful including the cast, Robert Montgomery, Evelyn Keyes, Claude Rains, James Gleason, Edward Everett Horton, Donald MacBride, Rita Johnson, John Emery, Halliwell Hobbs, and a credited Lloyd Bridges as a heavenly co-pilot.
