  2. You should also be tuned in to TCM next Friday for "The Strip". Mickey Rooney plays the drums in a dixieland band led by none other than the immortal trumpeter Louis "Satchmo" Armstrong and the great (caucasian) trombonist Jack Teagarden. (who once said to Satch: "you a spade, and I'm an old fade...we got the same soul...let's blow".) They truly loved each other and it's a joy to see a noirish flick that features these two "soul brothers" sharing their sweet sounds on the same stage. Nothin' brother'er than that!
  3. I wish there was a pre release cut of the Big Sleep available today that kept all Martha's best scenes before they hacked the film to pieces so Lauren wouldn't look too bad in it. Would be great to see for comparison's sake.
  4. Eddie and his team get a big thumbs up from me for the restored version of this film. I've only seen a "meat grinder" version previously and was amazed at just how good the film looks. Notably, the striping from the venetian blinds on Don Defore when he's posing as an old war buddy of the dead husband seems to alert us that he's "camoflaged". Also, there's a film break at the point where Liz and Dan engage in their second kiss so I've never seen the part where SHE initiates the follow up smooch....making her MORE aggressive and predatory than even I thought...just awesome.
  5. Really, the best part of this movie is when the bag drops in the car the micro-managing husband is stunned and ineffectual. The "kept" wife suddenly leaps into action. Her bad mood evaporates, there's a gleam in her eye, her mind whirling her body poised for the chase. She orders the husband into the car and floors it. Barreling down the highway at top speed she is able to out- manouevre the bad guy and get away with the loot. The crisis now dealt with and normalcy returning the hubby now tells her to get in the passenger seat and let him drive. No wonder she kills him.
  6. No one has to sell me on the merits of this wonderful film; I've been enjoying it on a public domain collection for a couple of years now. Lizabeth Scott is one of my favourite noir femmes. True, her range is extremely limited and she's no conventional beauty...but I'm madly in love with her. No doubt my wife harbors the same feelings for Dan Duryea... Scott is a selfish 'brat' of a wife who is not above using her husband(s) to claw her way up the social ladder. When they've outlived their usefulness...well.... Duryea is a two bit thug who's latched on to a big payday...unfortunate
  7. I came late to the Big Sleep. since I've been a Bogart fan from early childhood and didn't discover the film until 20 years ago. The movie itself is really just a pastache of contrived nonsense; it's like trying to make sense of the Beatles lyrics during their druggie period. The confusion begins with a dense narrative by Chandler and is exacerabated by the repair and alterations to the previewed version in order to improve the performance of Ms Bacall (at the expense of Martha Vickers performance as the nymphomanical younger sister.) Oddly, I understand Vickers was a virginal 19 year old

  9. That's a very cool point. My favourite detective show on TV was Columbo because of the cat and mouse aspect. I think writer/producers Levinson and Link must have enjoyed this movie tremendously in their youth.
  10. So you want to talk about the black film? Alright, let's talk about it. I'm a man who likes to talk to a man who likes to talk...or a woman, or whatever. Hard to be satirically biting and politically correct simultaneously... My guess is that the ORIGINS of the Black Noir are many and varied. So many alleys to drive up and down on this topic so I'll just rant briefly in a dozen different directions...   11. It seems to me somewhat disingenuous to interpret and contextualize a 70 year old film through our prism of 21st century values. Yet I suppose it would be politically incorrect to do otherwise. Nevertheless, Waldo Lydecker is a coded "homosexual" (which we read through his affected manners,artiness and "bitchy" attitude). He is sissified in comparison to MacPherson's rugged manliness. He wants Laura as a possession...like his clock or priceless bric a brac. He can't "have" her because he doesn't "want" her in that way.
