Phase IV. 1974. Directed by Saul Bass. With Nigel Davenport, Michael Murphy, Lynne Frederick. Two scientists travel to the Arizona desert to study and stop a colony of mutated and highly intelligent ants. I liked the idea of the movie, slowly showing the mystery of nature in contrast with the modern world. But the story is muddled, and instead of picking up the pace in some key scenes, the movie continues to drag on without any built-up tension. On the other hand, cinematographer Ken Middleham shot stunning sequences of the ant colony and other wildlife. Those are the best scenes in the movie.

The ones that I've seen are excellent movies: The Southerner, The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp, Spellbound, Blithe Spirit, The Story of G.I. Joe. Ingrid Bergman gave two excellent performances that year in The Bells of St. Mary's and Spellbound. Margaret Rutherford was hilarious in Blithe Spirit. -

We showed Sin Nombre at the Outreach Department where I used to work, and it made a strong impact on most of the audience. The movie tries to be realistic and stylish at the same time depicting the hard life of illegal immigrants.
