  1. Wondrous, Gloria - Elizabeth Taylor in Butterfield 8
  2. Lee J. Cobb was in The Three Faces of Eve with David Wayne
  3. Some very good movies this year. I only wish I was familiar with more of them. Dead End is among the best movies William Wyler directed. Fredric March gave a great performance in A Star is Born, and the ending of Stella Dallas is not to be missed. I also like Nothing Sacred; I think this was the first movie with Carole Lombard that I ever saw.
  4. Nobody could open the wrong door like Séverine. Rest in peace.
  5. We just recently watched an episode of Columbo with Rip Torn, and he was great as the jeweler. Rest in peace.
  6. No Time to Be young and Willing
  7. Mala Powers was in Cyrano de Bergerac with José Ferrer José Ferrer was in Voyage of the Damned with Faye Dunaway Fay Dunaway was in The Towering Inferno with Paul Newman Next: Ruth Chatterton
  8. Daves, Delmer - Director (Dark Passage)
  9. Lucille Ball was in Yours, Mine, and Ours with Henry Fonda
  10. Modern Times is indeed one of the best films ever made. Dodsworth is among my favorite films of all time. Walter Huston gives one of his best performances of his career. The last exchange between Huston and Ruth Chatterton is smashing. I've read nothing but good reviews for Things to Come, but I haven't seen it yet.
  11. Gene Hackman and Fernando Rey in The French Connection
  12. Bretton, Raphael - Art Director (The Poseidon Adventure)
  13. Zsigmond, Vilmos - Cinematographer (Deliverance)
  14. Jack Elam was in Once Upon a Time in the West with Henry Fonda Henry Fonda was in Sometimes a Great Notion with Paul Newman next: Lionel Stander
  15. The Thrill of it All is Lost in Translation
  16. Walker, Joseph - Cinematographer (It Happened One Night)
  17. The Hidden Hand The Twelve Chairs Baby Boom
  18. Johnson, Hildy - Rosalind Russell in His Girl Friday
  19. Rosalind Russell was in My Sister Eileen with Brian Aherne
  20. I've seen only The Private Life of Henry VIII, a very good film with great performances by Charles Laughton and Elsa Lanchester.
  21. My favorite director that year, John Cassavetes, Ingmar Bergman, and Paul Newman, were not nominated. Among the nominated directors, I would pick Anthony Harvey, with apologies to Carol Reed and Stanley Kubrick. Anthony Harvey directs The Lion in Winter as a sharp, fast paced historical drama, not a lecture on English History. The characters wage war and wield swords, but their deadliest weapons are their wit and tongues. The movie is also an acting piece, and Harvey elicits fiery performances from most of the cast.
