A 20th Century Fox Retrospective Scrapbook: 1974

Young Frankenstein is the best movie Mel Brooks ever made...it is the only Mel Brooks movie that I like. Rabbi Jacob is a very funny movie, but I haven't seen it in ages, and I would like to see it again. I didn't like Phantom of the Paradise the first time I saw it, but it has grown on me over the years. -
3 Women is a great film, with smashing performances by Shelley Duvall and Sissy Spacek and Janice Rule. One of my favorite films. A Wedding, on the other hand is muddled and overlong. I like Julia, a well made movie with very fine performances. I enjoyed Star Wars, but I never became a fan of the movie or the franchise.

Some great movies in this year. All That Jazz and Alien are two of my favorite films of all time. Both films have opening scenes that grab your attention and never let go. The opening credits alone in Alien prepare you to be scared for the next two hours. Breaking Away and Norma Rae are also excellent films. -

The French Connection is a great film, no doubt in my mind. I missed The Mephisto Waltz when it opened. Years later, a TV station was showing late at night, so I ran and bought some snacks, told my landlady that I was dead, so no phone calls, and watched the movie. It was so good I didn't want to miss a single frame. Then, in the last 15 minutes of the movie, when...well, when something big was going to happen there was a blackout all over the city. Aargh! The following day everybody was talking about it and how frustrating it was. I had to wait a few more years before I finally watch it completely. -

I went to see Emperor of the North with some friends without expecting much, and, well, I was wrong. Very good movie. -

So many good movies are favorites of mine. Sounder, Sleuth, The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie, The Other, The Poseidon Adventure, I never get tired of watching those movies. I also like The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds, with excellent performances by Joanne Woodward, Nell Potts, and Roberta Wallach. Jeannie Berlin was smashing in The Heartbreak Kid. -
