Opening Night (1977) - 5/10

Self-indulgent exercise in extreme tedium from actor-writer-director John Cassavetes, starring his wife Gena Rowlands as a stage actress struggling with aging and the recent accidental death of a fan. Feelings of insecurity and inadequacy are heightened by the tragic death, and Gena spirals further downward into depression and misery. Also featuring Ben Gazzara, Joan Blondell, Paul Stewart, Zohra Lampert, Laura Johnson, John Tuell, and Ray Powers. I know I'm against the grain with my opinion, as this currently has an 8.1/10 rating on IMDb, but I couldn't have cared less about Rowlands or the other characters, and their narcissistic whining and navel-gazing was old 30 minutes in let alone for the film's entire 144 minutes. I've liked some of Cassavetes other films (Shadows, Faces, A Woman Under the Influence), but this one just rubbed me the wrong way from the outset.

I agree it's not as good as the other movies you mentioned, but I like Gena Rowlands' performance.

The best horror movies comes out left field
That's a very good, interesting point; The Witch is a good example. The Lodge and Midsommar seem to be in the same field. I hope they're as good as the trailers.

This does look to be a weak year, although there's usually one or two that come out of nowhere that end up being decent.
I've heard good stuff about The Lodge
and Brightburn looks amusing, a sort of "what if" scenario wherein the Superman origin story gets told as a horror story:
There's also a remake of Child's Play (ugh...I wasn't a fan of the original)
another Annabelle haunted doll movie
Midsommar, which is the new movie from the director of Hereditary although this looks like a reatread of The Wicker Man
It Chapter Two, which I'm looking forward to thanks to the cast
Zombieland2, although that will be more of a comedy than a horror film
and Doctor Sleep, based on Stephen King's follow up to The Shining
Thanks for the trailers. The Lodge and Midsommar look pretty good.
I'm also looking forward to Robert Eggers' The Lighthouse.

A mother and her two children are terrorized by "The Curse of La Llorona" (2019) the movie is low key horror inspired by the Latino myth of the Weeping Woman. The Latino angle is the only interesting twist in an other wise routine movie which seems to be aimed at the kids. Director Michael Chaves made the scarier short film 'The Maiden" (2016)
Thanks for the review. I watched the trailers and it didn't look very interesting. So far, there isn't one horror movie this year that I want to see. Us didn't look very promising either.
