Voted. It takes way too long to load and is not as informative. I really miss the concise format with the ability to quickly see more information. I don't need fancy pictures. Just give me quick, easy to read, useable information. -
Singin In The Rain just because itis so fun and visually appealling. Yankee Doodle Dandy because Cagney is amazing, Cohan's songs are appealling and it leaves me feeing so patriotic. All of the Busby Berkley musicals of the 1930's because of the visual appeal of the amazing choreography and because the historical context of cheering up an audiance living through the Great Depression makes them even more interesting.

The silent era was certainly ONE of the golden ages of comedy. Comedy, like everything, evolves with changes in society, technology, etc. The best gags of that era HAD to be visual. That does not mean that later, talking comedies did not have excellent visual gags. Sometimes these visual gags had great dialogue that enhanced the effect but other gags were still strictly visual. I think the Marx Brothers movies have great examples of both strictly visual gags and visual gags that were enhanced by the dialogue.

I am a big Hitchcock fan and agree that he is a special case. I never really thought about his films in the context of film noir (I don't believe that idea was put forth in a college class I took on his films MANY years ago) but, of course many of his films have multiple film noir elements. For me, it is the feelings and emotions that speak to me like any good noir film.
