  1. TCM has an interesting way of celebrating the Lenten season and Holy Week.

While Catholics tonight are celebrating the Mass of the Lord's Supper, commemorating the meal that Jesus shared with His disciples before His suffering and death, TCM will be showing films condemned by the Catholic Legion of Decency.

The timing for this festival is curious.

I wuz gonna say that it was awful nice of Tcm to have some programmming for the atheists and noncatholics since the other airwaves are all showing a glut of easter flicks. why Paul do you imply that only catholics are celebrating the last supper?

  2. If he had lived where would his career have taken him. And would son, Creighton have been as successful being forced to use his real name since his father would still be billed that way. I wonder what kinds of films Chaney would have made if he had still been working in the 1940s and 1950s.

  3. Interesting topic, Ms. Cavegirl. The person I think fits that to a t is Leslie Banks. As Count Zaroff in The Most Dangerous Game his liability in that his face was partly paralyzed and seemed different from the other side added to the creepiness of his character. I had to go to imdb to find the basis of his injury of which I had read:

He suffered an injury in World War I that resulted in extensive scarring of one side of his face, and effectively disqualified him from many leading roles that required handsome actors. Banks made good use of his disability, however, presenting primarily the uninjured half of his face to the camera when playing kinder roles, and more of the scarred side when playing menacing characters.

  4. I just mentioned in another thread of a strong resemblance( in MY eyes, anyway) between FRANCHOT TONE and MEL FERRER.

    Sepiatone

I think Franchot Tone looks like he is the father of John Kerr of Tea and Sympathy fame.

  5. Let's face it, my guess is that the Academy [shoot doesn't the fact it calls itself the "Academy" tell you something] sees itself as a bit of an arbiter of what might be called "high-toned" art and even if the film is about a hard-hitting subject or about what might be called earthy or lower level issues like drug addiction blah blah blah, the academy would be more likely to award such a film if it has a more sophisticated style. And there is nothing wrong with that, as it is their academy which is putting the stamp on what the academy finds artistic and meaningful according to their standards. Perhaps the tale of the hip hop beginnings was not seen to be such. Personally I'm shocked that Dude, Where's My Car? was never nominated as it is about a serious subject that of auto stealing which is pandemic. Why not ask why said makers of said films like Straight Outta Compton need the stamp of approval of a group of "old white men" to feel their work is meaningful? Trying to force a total change of voters so that one gets approval seems rather sad to me. Maybe the Academy should institute a whole different awards show just for groups who feel slighted. They could call it the "Pity Party Academy Awards" and it could be hosted by that comedically gifted actress named Jada Pinkett Hypenated Hubby.

  6.

I made a video about my Uncle Carl Laemmle. A question always on my mind is why his name is not better remembered. People like Walt Disney, William Fox, Louis B Mayer, or Samuel Goldwyn all seem to be names known better these days. Is it just because they put their name in their studio? Or do you think there's another reason for it?

I'm sure you will find many people here who not only know of Carl but revere him. I for one can more more about him to appreciate than I could if I thought about people like Spielberg or others around now. He was a great asset to films and the ones he was involved in are still amazingly influential. Be proud of your family connection to one of the greats!

  7. I say genius. Just as Jack Lemmon has said about the difference between comedians and comedic actors, this is what is the difference between women in show biz who are inherently funny and one who plays a comedic part to perfection. That is what Lucy was doing and she probably was not inherently funny in her personal life. Her ability to perfect and perform stunts on that show was part of her appeal also, which not every funny woman can do. Some are just verbally comedic but she had the ability to morph into classic slapstick effects. I think she is not overrated but is one of the best tv comedic actors.

  8. Good choice for accolades, Ms. Cavegirl. Page is splendid in this and Ford a good foil for her. I think one has to have some depth of character to see beyond the outer trappings of her seemingly facile persona and come to admire her as do the people she meets along the way in her journey at the hotel.

  9. I am very sorry to hear of this. I enjoyed discussing things with him and he seems to have had a much more interesting history than he ever let be known. I'm amazed and fascinated about his connection to Oswald in Cuba and his later writings on the assassination.RIP, Fred!
