  1. Great rundown and posted pix on The Great Piggy Bank Robbery, Azure, almost as good as watching the cartoon. And you're certainly right, too, - this is one of the great, great Clampett masterpieces.

Daffy as Duck Twacy was a forerunner to when he would later be The Scarlet Pumpernickel, as well as a few other screen hero parodies. But those would be more subtle affairs with Chuck Jones, not the wild time that Daffy would have with Bob Clampett here.

    Thanks, Tom.

I forgot all about "The Scarlet Pumpernickel".  I haven't seen that one in a long time.

  2. Thanks very much, Azure. I didn't know that the Johnny line was from Fibber McGee and Molly.

One of my favourite aspects of Tortoise Wins By A Hare is that, for once, Bugs is not in control, and he resorts to all kinds of sneaky ploys to get that control, but still winds up out-smarted, anyway - for a change.

And, boy, Cecil Turtle was right - those gangster rabbits really aren't very smart, are they?

You're welcome, Tom.  Yes, Bugs was rarely the loser in any of his cartoons.  The only other time that I can think of is in "Rabbit Rampage".  In this cartoon, an animator uses his paintbrush as a weapon against Bugs.  He torments him by drawing him incorrectly and by doing all sorts of crazy things to him.

  3. Azure, I believe the 1940's film is "Adventures of Don Juan" released in 1948 starring Errol Flynn and Viveca Lindfors and Max Steiner is the composer of the film's score. The score was adapted for the 1981 adventure comedy film "Zorro, The Gay Blade" starring George Hamilton and a portion of the original Max Steiner score was used in a couple of scenes in the 1985 movie "The Goonies", which was an adventure comedy about searching for Spanish treasure. Is this correct?

Well done, Marsha!  You got them all correct.  The thread's all yours.

  4. Leo McCarey won the best director Oscar for 1937's The Awful Truth and again for 1944's Going My Way, for which he also won the Best Original Story Oscar.

McCarey directed a lot of great films, including Duck Soup, Ruggles of Red Gap, Make Way for Tomorrow, Love Affair, & An Affair to Remember.

Yes, that's correct.  Well done, Lawrence.

Leo McCarey is one of only 8 directors to have won an Oscar for Best Director, Best Picture and Best Screenplay/Story.  He was the first of the 8 to do so.

    Your turn, Lawrence.

  5. THE GREAT ESCAPE:

The man who stole the items is played by James Garner, the `scrounger` and the things were stole to use to get what was needed to escape.

One of my favourite movies  of all time.

Good job, GregoryPeckfan!  I really enjoy this movie as well.  Your turn.

  6. Thanks, Dr. Lawrence.

    :)

    Next:

After graduating from law school, this man briefly worked as a criminal defense attorney.  He also tried his hand at mining, boxing and songwriting.  He later found work in Hollywood as an assistant director, a gagman and screenwriter.

In 1921, he directed his first film.  He went on to direct many short films throughout the 1920s.

Starting in the 1930s, he found great success directing feature films.  He worked with several major stars, including the Marx Brothers, Mae West, Irene Dunne, Cary Grant, Gary Cooper and many others.  He also continued to work as a screenwriter.

He won the Oscar for Best Director twice.  He also won an Oscar for Best Story.

Please name the director, the 2 films for which he won the Oscar for Best Director and the film for which he won the Oscar for Best Story.  Feel free to name your favorite film(s) directed by this man.

  7. Thanks, Miles.

Next:  The score for this late-1940s adventure film was apparently very popular.  So popular, in fact, that parts of it were stolen used in two adventure films in the 1980s.  In one of the 1980s films, a portion of the original 1940s film score was used in a couple of scenes.  In the other 1980s film, the music was adapted.

Please name the 1940s film, the composer of the film's score and the two 1980s films.

  8. I think it's Henry King.  He was nominated for Best Director for Song of Bernadette (1943) and Wilson 1944).  He is also known for directing several other well-known films, such as Love is a Many Splendored Thing, The Sun Also Rises, Carousel, Lloyd's of London and The White Sister (1923).

  9. Frank McHugh -- made 16 films in 1933

    Spring Byington -- made 11 films 1937

Edward Everett Horton -- made 10 films in 1934, 12 films in 1935, and 10 films in 1934

Eric Blore -- made 11 films in 1941

Regis Toomey -- made 12 films in 1939

  10. Great example. TCM has aired MR. AND MRS. NORTH, and it did seem strange to have her on camera without George. She also turns up doing a musical number ("Concerto for Index Finger") in TWO GIRLS AND A SAILOR without him.

That's right!  I forgot all about that.  I love that scene.

    :)
