Yes I can see why your first guess would be WITW, however my first clue said he meets the young woman in a nightclub and that is not how he EGR meets Joan!
Yes, I realize that. I was just commenting on how similar the two stories were, that's all. I was also pointing out that EGR did have a daughter in that movie (even though it wasn't the movie you were thinking of).

By the way, I just watched the beginning of The Woman in the Window and I saw that Edward G. Robinson had a son and a daughter in that movie. Except for that and another detail (he goes to his gentlemen's club, not a nightclub), the plot of that movie is surprisingly similar to the first clue that you gave.
