  1. Hint:  The suit that his great-grandmother makes for him is green (with small flowers on it).  The boys at his new school constantly make fun of his suit.  They fight with him during recess and after school.  His great-grandfather gives him lessons on how to fight so that he can defend himself.

  2. Skyline??

(This is a movie from 2010, so I don't know if this is the title that you're thinking of.  It seems to be the only word that I can come up with, though!  Please let me know what the correct answer is.  I'll move on so we can keep the thread going.)

  3. Next:  In a modest late-1940s musical/romantic comedy, this fun song was sung by a well-known comedian and a very well-known singer/actor.  The singer/actor plays a returning soldier who wants to become a singer.  The comedian, who plays his friend and mentor, tries to help him to achieve his dream.  A well-known female singer also stars in this movie.

Name the song, the two people who sang it and the movie it's featured in.

  4. If I may interrupt for just a moment, I heard that Andy Williams did the singing in a question back on a "Hollywood Squares" show years ago, but what I've found out since is that he recorded the song for Warner Bros. in case Bacall's singing voice wasn't good enough.  However, the producers decided to leave her voice in the final release, so it's Lauren Bacall that you hear in the clip.  By the way, she sure looked older than 19 in this movie.

    It's still Azure's turn.

So Andy Williams was their "backup plan"?  Too funny.  Why couldn't they get a woman to dub her voice?  Someone should find his recording of this song and compare it to Bacall's singing voice.

I love Lauren Bacall in this movie, but I think that they should have gotten someone else to sing the song.  I don't really care for Bacall's singing voice.  (Sorry, Miss Bacall!)  And yes, she did look a lot older than 19!

  5. Yes it is, Azure!  However, there is some question as to whether or not Lauren Bacall did do her own singing.  In his biography, Andy Williams claimed that at age 14 it was his voice that was used to dub hers, but according to author Eric Lax, after researching studio call sheets, he has come to the conclusion that Bacall did her own singing.    I believe she said she did her own singing, too.  Anyway, here is a clip of Lauren - or Andy - singing How Little We Know.

Interesting.  Well, it certainly sounded like it was her own voice.  It's kind of hard to believe that a voice like that could belong to a 14-year-old boy (but you never know).  Thanks for the info.

  7. Looks like Clinton Sundberg to me, also known as Mike the Bartender in Easter Parade

That's correct!  Good job, Lavender.  Clinton Sundberg is also known for playing a film director in an episode of I Love Lucy ("Ricky's Screen Test").

    The thread's all yours, Lavender.

  8. You've gotta see LES DEMOISELLES DE ROCHEFORT, unless you hate musicals, Gene Kelly, Catherine Deneuve, or Michel LeGrand's Jazz-- it's the ultimate French Jazz Musical

Thanks for the video, Lonesome.  It looks like a fun movie.  It's so weird to hear Gene Kelly singing with a different voice!

  9. Next:  OK, this shouldn't be too hard.  You've probably seen this actor in several movies and TV shows.  Unlike our dear Mr. Pennick, he usually appeared on the list of credited actors.  He appeared in many movies during the 1940s and 1950s.  In the 1950s and 1960s, he made guest appearances on many TV shows.

  10. Yes, it's Jack Pennick.  Not exactly a household name, but he kept very busy in small parts for many years.  He was a particular favorite of director John Ford and he was part of the John Ford stock company.  He was a military veteran of several wars and was Ford's unofficial military adviser on many films.  He also served as a bodyguard for Shirley Temple at one time.  Check out his filmography.  It's quite impressive.  Azure, you're up next.

Thanks, Miles.  I looked up his list of credits and I was amazed at how many well-known films he's been in.  I bet he made one heck of a bodyguard.  In addition to having a fierce-looking face, he was also very tall -- 6 feet 4 1/2 inches.  I'm sure no one dared to come near Shirley Temple!

Well, Miles, I'm sure Jack Pennick appreciates the fact that you gave him some well-deserved attention.  I'll be on the lookout for this guy when I watch the films that he's in.
