She Couldn't Say No (1940) It's time for Retro TV Mania!! All of the movie themes for my schedule were inspired by TV shows from the 50s, 60s and 70s. Here's a list of all the TV shows that are featured in the schedule. Topper [1953-1955] The Ghost and Mrs. Muir [1968-1970] Green Acres [1965-1971] My World....and Welcome to It [1969-1970] I Love Lucy [1951-1957] Bewitched [1964-1972] Happy Days [1974-1984] Dark Shadows [1966-1971] The Wild Wild West [1965-1969] Wanted: Dead or Alive [1958-1961] The Fugitive [1963-1967] The Law and Mr. Jones [1960-1962] The Love Boat [1977-1987] Here Come the Brides [1968-1970] The Honeymooners [1955-1956] The Jack Benny Program [1950-1965] Perry Mason [1957-1966] Columbo [1971-2003] Get Smart [1965-1970] Family Affair [[1966-1971] Our Miss Brooks [1952-1956] Alfred Hitchcock Presents [1955-1962] The Twilight Zone [1959-1964] On Sunday, we're kicking the week off with a 24-hour "Phun with Phantoms" marathon. Yes, we'll be giggling with ghosts right in the middle of February (because I don't want to have to wait till October to get my ghost comedy fix). :-) == The daytime schedule for Monday is devoted to the Green Acres show. In the morning, we're focusing on films about city folks who have to adjust to life on the farm. After that, we're celebrating the 100th birthday of Green Acres star Eva Gabor. In the evening, we're celebrating the career of Keenan Wynn, the Star of the Month ("The Long of It" challenge). Although there were several other worthy candidates for the SOTM, I chose Keenan Wynn because I've always felt that he was one of the most versatile character actors in classic films. It's not often that Keenan Wynn is honored or even talked about, so I decided that it was high time for him to be spotlighted. Wynn appeared in over 150 films and made guest appearances on many TV shows. For one season in 1959, he even starred on a TV show called The Troubleshooters. Wynn was also very devoted son to his father, comedian Ed Wynn. For the SOTM theme, I chose a title from a short-lived TV show called My World.....and Welcome to It. (It has nothing to do with Keenan Wynn or classic films, but it's great title for a SOTM theme, don't you think?) This week, we'll get to see several of Wynn's films from the 50s and early/mid-60s, starting with the TCM premiere of Man in the Middle. == On Tuesday morning, I'm paying tribute to the stars of my favorite TV show of all time -- I Love Lucy. In the 4 movies that I've chosen, we'll get to see Lucille Ball, Desi Arnaz, William Frawley and Vivian Vance in dramatic roles. We'll finish off the day with themed films for two more popular sitcoms -- Bewitched and Happy Days. In the evening, we've got a lineup of "shadowy" films for the Dark Shadows theme. == It's getting wild on Wednesday! We start the day off with comedies set in the Wild West. After that, we've got a lineup of films about notorious outlaws and fugitives. In the evening, we've got a lineup of films that were chosen by our 1935 guest programmer, Arthur Ferguson Jones (from The Whole Town's Talking). Mr. Jones chose The Wrong Man because he himself was the victim of mistaken identity. He looks exactly like the notorious criminal "Killer" Mannion and he has gotten into a lot of trouble because of this. Jones chose Good Neighbor Sam because, like Jones, the main character works for an advertising company. Although Jones is only a clerk, he has often wondered what it would be like to be an advertising executive. He enjoyed seeing all the misadventures that Jack Lemmon experienced in the film. (He was quite shocked to see that one of the supporting characters in the film looked a lot like himself.) Jones chose A Slight Case of Murder because he liked that the gangsters in the film were trying to reform. Jones believes that every person should be a good, law-abiding citizen. He wishes that Killer Mannion could reform like the gangsters in the film did. (Jones was amazed once again to see that the main character in this film looked just like him.) Since Jones' dream is to go on a trip to Shanghai, he chose a Chinese film called The Boatman's Daughter. The film is about a woman who becomes involved with the idle rich in Shanghai. Jones thought that this film would help him to learn more about the language and culture of his dream destination. For the last film, Jones chose Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, a film that is very dear to his heart. You see, Jones has a love interest named Wilhemina "Bill" Clark -- a woman who happens to look exactly like Jean Arthur. Miss Clark is a wisecracking, streetwise woman who helps and encourages Jones. Jean Arthur's character in Mr. Smith reminds Jones of his beloved Miss Clark. (Awwww, how cute!) == On Thursday, we're celebrating Valentine's Day. We start off with a trio of musical films about shipboard romances. Since Valentine's Day is a popular day for weddings, we've got a lineup of bride-themed and honeymoon-themed films. In the evening, we're celebrating the film career (and birthday) of the one and only Jack Benny. It was very hard to choose one person from a list of worthy candidates for the "Short of It" challenge. I decided to choose Jack Benny because, even though he had a short film career, he had a long, successful career on TV (and on the radio). I thought that this would fit in well with my "Retro TV Mania" theme. February 14, 2019 will be his 125th.....oops, I mean his 39th birthday. == On Friday morning/afternoon, we're solving mysteries with Perry Mason and homicide detectives. We'll finish off the day by following the misadventures of bumbling spies who are reminiscent of Maxwell Smart, the inept (but ultimately successful) character on Get Smart. In the evening, we're focusing on films about families for the "Friday Night Spotlight". The evening is highlighted by the premiere of House of Strangers. == On Saturday, we're spending the day with the wonderful Eve Arden (the "Ghosts of TCM Past" challenge - What a Character!). We start the day off with the film version of her popular TV show Our Miss Brooks. Several of her memorable films are featured in the lineup, including the TCM premiere of She Couldn't Say No. For "The Essentials", I picked Notorious, which is my favorite Hitchcock film. I was delighted to find out that it was Robert Osborne's favorite Hitchcock film as well. I thought that choosing this film would be a great way to pay tribute to the late Mr. Osborne. If I remember correctly, he has chosen this film for "The Essentials" before. This movie is followed by two more Hitchcock films starring Cary Grant, who was one of Alfred Hitchcock's favorite actors. For the "TCM Underground", I chose 2 cult silent films -- Metropolis and The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. I've always felt that these movies seemed to be Twilight-Zone-ish. The short silent film The Fall of the House of Usher also has sequences that give it an other-worldly feel. The Twilight Zone is one of my favorite TV shows, so I thought that it would make the perfect movie theme to end the week!
