Ship of Fools (1965) about the editing: Lt. Huebner (Werner Klemperer): "I observe people... they travel on boats often always searching for something...." Lee Marvin recounting Pedro Cerrano's Bats Are Afraid.... I mean- Curve Ball On The Outside Corner story to Michael Dunn plays out as all good midnight howls should - one swig at a time. Characters contemplating their life or realizing the lies they have accepted, I think, calls for editing that breathes. Not everyone is reflecting but they all are 'off the grid with the wheels turning' approaching 1933 Germany. The characters and the audience don't have the luxury of getting off the ship when things get uncomfortable and that's fine. Its why I think Cast Away (2000) works and why I like Nicholson's performance in The Shining (1980).

I remember going to see Only The Lonely (1991) in Lawrence, Kansas with my mom when I was a kid. She told me the behind the scene story about John Candy giving up his movie star trailer to Maureen O'Hara when he heard about her watered down accommidations for the film. I liked (still do) Candy before hearing that and it just made me like him more. A nice gesture from one legend to another. No matter the film - she was a force on screen. Great that she was able to attend the TCM Film Festival. It was easy to tell from all the TCM fans faces how excited and pleased they were to see her. It's days like this that I wish I was back at the Englewood Theatre in Independence, Missouri. No matter the classic film - as long as I could escape for some time. And, of course, make sure I go next door to the Ben Franklin and get some candy for the film. Maureen O'Hara (August 17, 1920 - October 24, 2015) Rest In Peace
