  15. A foreign film director came to the United States to publicize one of his films in the early sixties. As he met with film critics and film professionals, he was astonished to learn that a noted Hollywood director was not considered to be a great artist. This upset him so much that he decided to do something about it-- he would write an academic book about the quality of each film that this director had created during his long career. However, to do so he had to get the cooperation of that director and engage him in a series interviews concerning each film. The Following is an excerpt of the letter that he wrote to that film director: If overnight the cinema had to do without its soundtrack and become once again a silent art, then many directors would be forced into unemployment, but among the survivors there would be------ and everyone would realize at last that he is the greatest film director in the world. When your name the director who wrote the letter, please mention what film he came to the US to publicize. And you may mention any others associated with him you care about. Then please name the director that was mentioned in the letter as being the greatest director in the world. Again you can discuss whatever films you find interesting that he created. Also what film was he working on at the time that he received this letter from the foreign film director? As you go through the films of these two directors, can you give us some similarity or differences in the style or the cinematic technique or the mise en scène of the two of them. And What, if anything, can you tell us about these films that is unique to these two directors?
