I think I've got it from that last clue.  Fred MacMurray, on "My Three Sons", played Steve Douglas, the father of the three sons.  A few years later, Eddie Albert was cast as the male lead in "Green Acres", where his character was named Oliver Wendell Douglas.  I'm guessing that Eddie Albert was considered for "My Three Sons" before Fred MacMurray.
