First saw the phenomenal actor James Caan in "The Godfather". And he had big shoes to fill, coming after Omar Sharif, but he was quite good and naturally funny with Barbra Streisand in "Funny Lady". But my real thrill was when James Caan played Brian Piccolo in the made- for -TV movie "Brian's Song" opposite Billy Dee Williams, playing Gale Sayers. I knew Gale Sayers, he was a neighbor of mine when I was in grad school at KU--really a kind and humble guy. The way James Caan portrayed the friendship between these two football players was genuine to the character of the Gale Sayers that I knew. May they both rest in peace.
