While the gimmick is cute, how am I supposed to watch them ? Lots of black coffee ?
-
When Barry would appear on the show, you had to turn up the treble or you couldn't understand a word being said ! That show was an institution for such a long time. What a shame.

When did you first agree with the Oscars? Last agree with them?

The English Patient - whatever year. -
After the 2008 crash, all bets were off on radio and t.v. Anything that can get a rating gets on. I remember when Spike t.v. bragged about being a "man's channel" . Within six months every CSI, SUV and all the rest were marathoned all day on there. Every channel shows everything now. Whatever someone will watch. It seems TCM is a rarity in that its what it has always been. There is room for a TCM2 done the same way. I don't see AMC or Fox having film festivals, cruises and the like. That should show someone that this format gets lots of viewership and it would be a good idea to do it again. Or so it seems.

Me too ! (raises hand) I love that these films get thrown in the mix from time to time. I also like NBNW when I can catch it. If I were to rant, it would be about those cheap dud horror films they show on friday night. But, not this.

I don't have to choose so I won't. Although, if Fred is on I am more likely to watch . And he had Ginger !! :x

Is 1985 the worst year for film in the last half-century?
Geralddddd replied to skimpole's topic in General Discussions
Sorry to derail the thread. OHMSS did put me to sleep, looked more travelogue than spy film. But, I liked TLD but, it was written for Brosnan. In AVTAK Roger was just too old at that point. I love Grace Jones music but, not in the romantic sense...And I tend to be biased against british agents working in the US. I prefer the foreign locales. but, that's for another thread. 1985 seemed to have more trendy films that grow dated rather easily. Lots of bright colors and phony smiles. Not much that stands the test of time. -
Is 1985 the worst year for film in the last half-century?

I was in high school then. I had to watch movies since I hated school What I liked that year: * Back to the future * Breakfast club * Color Purple * Rocky IV * Weird Science * Commando * A View to a Kill (Worst Bond film ever:|* ) * Thunderdome (put me to sleep) You know what ? This year really wasn't very remarkable afterall. I tend to agree with the OP ! -
Why the heck not ? Who knows how much longer she'll be around. She has insights few will have after all these years. I would be for it.

For me it was a combination of things: * Watching old films remind me of my god mother from long ago * I really began to enjoy films set in that period like Victor/Victoria, Henry and June etc.. * I love history, The "That's Entertainment" films, TCM * The cool suits and beautiful dresses. The whole concept of star and celebrity. * And when being "stupid, stoned and stumbling" became the new comedic style , I was done with the new stuff. The explosions, gore, lack of character development or any plot just lost me.

Yes, Doris and I have a birthday on the 3rd so I expect to see a few films of her's. But, its Brando's birthday and a few other stars also. So TCM has their choice and if its Doris Day, I approve ! B-) ( please don't take me seriously LOL )

The worst SOTM is still light years ahead of whatever the other channels are showing. And you still get some really good films to watch. So why are we splitting hairs ?? I enjoy how TCM mixes things up a bit. And why not have some one celebrated who is still around so she can appreciate it in person instead of posthumously ? I enjoy being exposed to actors I may not know or didn't know as much about as I could have. It can be educational as well as entertaining.

Always take a "first post" with a grain of salt. Doubt you ever see that poster again.

popular actors who are not your favorites
Geralddddd replied to FloydDBarber's topic in General Discussions
I think what's lost in this is we don't have to agree at all as its totally subjective. I find it fascinating reading how others couldn't be bothered with those actors who are some of my favs like Dietrich, Taylor, Gable and such. It helps you see the other side of things and not see everything as rose colored. -
I like Jane Fonda, the person and the actress. I watch her films when I can. I thought "They shoot horss don't they ?" was magnificent for a variety of reasons. We all know what she did and it was deplorable. She apologized and explained things to my own satisfaction. So we move on. That war was very divisive and had many people taking unpopular stands. Maybe that should be its own thread. Those we can't stand and will never forgive.

> {quote:title=mrroberts wrote:}{quote}We all have long given up trying to figure out the story. Bogart's performance and the witty lines are what make this flick ( and the gals too, Dorothy Malone especially). There is a newer version made in the 70's. It stars Robert Mitchum and the location is moved to the UK. In this film they make the plot a lot easier to follow. There are certain parts like the young guy who moved the body being gay that obviously couldn't be shown back then. Its not at the level of the original of course. But, if you watch it, then watch the original it will begin to make a lot of sense. I actually understand it now....believe it or not !
-
Absolutely ! Especially when its back to back. The bits of the new cd I've heard weren't bad either.
-
I'm not so much of a snob and I don't need to see Casablanca everyday either. Many films that weren't rated very well were very entertaining to me. I like the variety. I would add the 60's also to that parameter. And also newer films set in the classic era also. We all have our own opinions. There is no one standard nor should there be one. Open your mind and just enjoy the channel, life is too short to gripe. Be happy and gay, like they say in the movies

I'm still holding out for a TCM2 devoted to those films and so many others. 100 years of film is just too much for one channel !

Breakfast at Tiffanys, Marilyn or Audrey?
Geralddddd replied to bbbbbbbbbbbbbbb's topic in General Discussions
Remember, the back story about Lula Mae basically took care of Fred until they met Doc and he went off to the Military. I can't see Marilyn taking care of anyone except herself frankly. In her films its always about her one way or another. At least with Audrey's portrayal comes across to me as survivor who made the best of her life as she could. Marilyn would just seem like life washes over her and she just does what the men want of her. I believe she possibly could have done it wouldn't have had the depth nor the lasting power of Audrey. I have a friend who frames pictures for a living. He just did a couple of "BaT" door hangers for someone a few weeks ago. I know quite a few young people just recently discovering this film. I think that says something. -
AMC has them locked up until December 31, 2019. And magically has The Godfather going all day on Brandos TCM day. 4 Hours with commercials !!
-
When I was a kid in the late 70's we had a UHF station here in Los Angeles ch.52. As I got home from grammar school they would show Little Rascals, Our Gang, My Little Margie etc... and me and my friends would never miss it. GSN used to show "black and white overnight" Showing the old game shows like "What's my line", "To tell the truth" and so on. I believe the market is there for those classic programs. They just have trouble getting sponsors.

Which day in August are you most looking forward to on TCM?
Geralddddd replied to TopBilled's topic in General Discussions
This nature does work against me as I found it difficult for me to believe in Robert Preston truly wanting the librarian in The Music Man because he made me believe in him so powerfully in Victor / Victoria a) Maybe he's just that good an actor. One doesn't preclude the other. Maybe he swung both ways ?? I loved V / V btw ! -
There is Doris Day and Then There is Doris Day
Geralddddd replied to aged-in-wood's topic in General Discussions
I only watch the early Doris Day films so I know what the OP means. "Young man with a Horn" was on not too long ago actually. "My dream is yours" is another one I enjoyed. I'm not looking for cinematic brilliance. Just a fun time watching old films. Those 60's films really aren't my type. But, since we share a birthday, maybe I can understand why she made them.
