  1. I feel so sad for my friends in the UK. Actually we have better access to great British films than they do. They have a website for the TCM there and I read the programming guide. They even have old repeats of t.v. shows on their channel.

I have a dear friend in Northampton and she only wishes she could see what we see over here. That channel should change its name because its nothing like what we have here.

  2. So someone else saw what I saw in Gump. All the publicity went into those tricks about having him meet JFK and all that. No one watched the actual plot. Where all men are damaged and become millionaires and all women just sleep around at will. And make decisions that make no sense.

"Boxing Helena" Whatever Kim Basinger paid to get out of that sick disaster was money well spent !

Most films that end in III or IV etc...

As has been said, I don't stick around for the bad ones, my life is to short to waste that time.

  3. Did it ever dawn on any of you that this is the very reason these films are played so often ? It might surprise you but, channels like this are gaining in popularity. And new viewers are watching all the time who have heard of these films but, haven't seen them.

Films like the ones shown this evening for me are very easy ice breakers since most have seen them or wanted to see them hence, they are shown often .

  4. > {quote:title=leobertucelli wrote:}{quote}YES, Why are they going to show all this evening idiotic silent 'things' that should have been unloaded long ago, and do include all those moronic programers as well? Is it any wonder why turner lost and is losing viewers!!

I'm sure that's why they now have cruises you have to book months in advance and a film festival because they are losing viewers.

They say the best way to deal with a troll is to starve them of the attention they so badly crave.

  5. I am strongly in favor of the GP's because the classic film genre is one I want to see grow. That will teach current entertainment producers that there still are many of us who are interested in something other than explosions, buildings crumbling and the world ending in every film.

Maybe those who have been on aren't as astute as you would like. That doesn't mean to throw away the whole concept. You just tweak it a bit to get it just right.

TCM has a demographic some stars want to reach and being a GP might be the best way to reach us. I talk to young people all the time who are starting to like classic films. And the usuals are the only ones they have seen. We all have to start somewhere.

    > As far as Naked CIty, Me-TV (KVME, channel 20 here in Los Angeles) is running classic TV shows, and Naked City is one of them. Other series they are showing: Route 66, Lost in Space, Peter Gunn, The Rifleman, That Girl, I Love Lucy, Daniel Boone, Perry Mason, Cannon, Hawaii Five-O, Gunsmoke, Bonanza, The Big Valley, Kojak, The Fugitive, The Rockford Files, M*A*S*H, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, The Untouchables, The Bob Newhart Show, The Odd Couple, Cheers, The Honeymooners, The Twilight Zone, Mission: Impossible, Combat!, 12 O'Clock High, The Rebel, Branded, The Guns of Will Sonnett, The Wild Wild West, Hogan's Heroes, Batman, Star Trek, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, Get Smart, Car 54: Where Are You?, Honey West, The Rogues, The Brady Bunch, Family Affair, Make Room for Daddy, The Dick Van Dyke Show, Columbo, and Thriller.

Thanks for saving my fingers from typing. Not to mention Pax ch. 30 and KDOC ch. 56 here in Los Angeles. Three free networks showing classice t.v. shows. That's plenty.

I am not for stretching the TCM concept anymore than it already has. Frankly I would like to get back to what it was so I can watch on Friday nights again. Start a new channel and put what you want there. Leave a great channel like TCM alone.

    > Unfortunately, regardless of what USA Today says, within the next year or two, we'll be seeing a big decline in not only drive-ins but theaters in general. Maybe not those owned by large circuits, but the smaller independent theaters located in more rural communities. They'll be victims of the changeover from 35mm film to digital projection. Like many of their indoor counterparts, some drive-ins simply aren't going to be able to afford the $70,000+ it costs to convert to digital projection.

    >

    > The motion picture industry itself`is estimating that between 1,000 and 1,500 theaters across the country will be shuttered when they completly eliminate the availability of film prints and that's a lot sooner than many people think. In some parts of the country, there are already second-run and small town theaters having trouble booking certain films because they can't get prints.

The walk in near me was owned by a large chain and way basically dying. The shopping center had already promised the spot to a department store. The chain didn't bother to upgrade the equipment so you had to pay full price to a 3D film that didn't show 3D for example.

An entrepreneur bought theater, totally remodelled the interior, upgraded the equipement. This theater was known for only being busy friday nights, saturday, sunday afternoon. And was a wasteland the rest of the week.

This guy had the idea, since no one comes during the week, drastically lower the prices (what a concept!). Tuesdays and Thursdays all films are $4 all day. We have people who will bypass the premiere on Fridays to wait until Tuesday to see the same film. And they have lines all week now.

Also they started midnight showings. Twilight for example sold out all six theaters weeks in advance with more people coming to be turned away. That's over a thousand customers for a once dying theater.

Lowering prices can actually increase profits. At $4, you can compete with Redbox and anybody else. If you want to get out of a hot house, there's a cheap place to go.

  8. I know somewhere around here there's a super long thread on Barbara Stanwick but, its just ONE THREAD. That's the way it should be.

I guess he's upset it isn't on the front page every single day and that there are other actors who were good and worthy of discussion.

  9. I thought it was something people here could appreciate and might like.

I didn't really pay much attention to the plot. The part about the ship sinking and lifeboats and the other ships on the way, that I liked quite a bit. But, there's another older version of Titanic that already did all that

Leonardo and all that sappy stuff could have been edited out and I wouldn't have known the difference.

  10. And the way I look at it, no matter what they do , you'll keep watching anyways so they should do as they please. I thought the way they did this month was very clever . I expected to be able to discuss it with others. And what I see is a complaint ! How disappointing.

This is by far the best channel for what it shows and they are creative too. Splitting hairs really doesn't add much to anything. It will never be your personal channel to do what you please with. Accept it for what it is, add suggestions, give opinions. That's fantastic to do. I do it all the time.

But, the moaning gets monotonous. If they show NBNW everyday, you will still be a viewer. What else are you gonna turn to ? You can find something positive in February to comment about I am sure. Its 31 days long for goodness sake ! (On TCM it is)

  11. After the 2008 crash, all bets were off on radio and t.v. Anything that can get a rating gets on.

I remember when Spike t.v. bragged about being a "man's channel" . Within six months every CSI, SUV and all the rest were marathoned all day on there. Every channel shows everything now. Whatever someone will watch.

It seems TCM is a rarity in that its what it has always been. There is room for a TCM2 done the same way. I don't see AMC or Fox having film festivals, cruises and the like. That should show someone that this format gets lots of viewership and it would be a good idea to do it again.

    Or so it seems.

    Me too ! (raises hand)

I love that these films get thrown in the mix from time to time. I also like NBNW when I can catch it.

If I were to rant, it would be about those cheap dud horror films they show on friday night. But, not this.

  13. Sorry to derail the thread.

OHMSS did put me to sleep, looked more travelogue than spy film. But, I liked TLD but, it was written for Brosnan. In AVTAK Roger was just too old at that point. I love Grace Jones music but, not in the romantic sense...And I tend to be biased against british agents working in the US. I prefer the foreign locales. but, that's for another thread.

1985 seemed to have more trendy films that grow dated rather easily. Lots of bright colors and phony smiles. Not much that stands the test of time.

  14. For me it was a combination of things:

    * Watching old films remind me of my god mother from long ago

    * I really began to enjoy films set in that period like Victor/Victoria, Henry and June etc..

    * I love history, The "That's Entertainment" films, TCM

    * The cool suits and beautiful dresses. The whole concept of star and celebrity.

    * And when being "stupid, stoned and stumbling" became the new comedic style , I was done with the new stuff. The explosions, gore, lack of character development or any plot just lost me.

  15. Of course Dish has its own issues (bad weather, jets flying by etc..) and I am certainly not advertising for them. But, the price increases aren't near as often as cable. And at least they'll add a channel or two to ease the pain.

There is a reason the cable business fought so hard in court against dish, they knew their monopoly was threatened. I was without pay tv totally for a few years in the 90's because I just detest cable !

And TCM is part of Time Warner IIRC so there will be no streaming or anything that interferes with their cable system. IMO
