Yes, Doris and I have a birthday on the 3rd so I expect to see a few films of her's. But, its Brando's birthday and a few other stars also. So TCM has their choice and if its Doris Day, I approve ! B-)
( please don't take me seriously LOL )

The worst SOTM is still light years ahead of whatever the other channels are showing. And you still get some really good films to watch. So why are we splitting hairs ??
I enjoy how TCM mixes things up a bit. And why not have some one celebrated who is still around so she can appreciate it in person instead of posthumously ?
I enjoy being exposed to actors I may not know or didn't know as much about as I could have. It can be educational as well as entertaining.

Always take a "first post" with a grain of salt. Doubt you ever see that poster again.

I think what's lost in this is we don't have to agree at all as its totally subjective. I find it fascinating reading how others couldn't be bothered with those actors who are some of my favs like Dietrich, Taylor, Gable and such. It helps you see the other side of things and not see everything as rose colored.

Fascinating how we complain today about ads when most of the early t.v. and radio produced during the time these movies were released had the ads read right in the middle of the shows.
I remember watching black and white overnight on Game Show Network (which is back on thankfully ) when one of the celebrities was complaining about a new t.v. show. And how it was constantly interrupted by advertisements as it was the new thing in those days.
Some things never change do they ??

I like Jane Fonda, the person and the actress. I watch her films when I can. I thought "They shoot horss don't they ?" was magnificent for a variety of reasons.
We all know what she did and it was deplorable. She apologized and explained things to my own satisfaction. So we move on. That war was very divisive and had many people taking unpopular stands.
Maybe that should be its own thread. Those we can't stand and will never forgive.

This is one of my absolute favorite films. Anytime I want to be cheered up, its one of my choices. I wish I had known it was on but, it'll come around again soon enough.
I tend to like films set in the interwar period so it fits for me.

I know its hard for some to believe but, some of *us* don't marry simply because we have no interest in the institution. That old tired stereotype that if someone doesn't marry must be in some closet really hasn't ever had any credence. People make choices for whatever reasons they wish.
And so many of the great actors were married to their craft and when they did marry , they never took any time to keep it going. Sometimes its better to just focus on acting as that's where you will spend most your time and energy and its what makes you truly happy.

I have a real life friend who says this every year
Good idea Qrex ,I'd watch those old awards before I'd watch the new one.

I thought Kim was fine and the potential for a good film was there. The execution just didn't work out.
They didn't really show you why she went to drink. "She went on the road, shows were cancelled, she's a drunk" And it was really glossed over. It would have made sense to parallel her own addictions to the woman she stole the script from's illnesses. That might have helped.
And in places it was really too dark. That certainly was a revealing outfit she got arrested in though

> {quote:title=LoveFilmNoir wrote:}{quote}On GMA it said that Doris Day does not grant on camera interviews. Her voice sounded like someone who was healthy. It seriously peaked my curiosity about how she looks these days.
I saw a tabloid the other day caught a glimpse of her I guess its recently. She's basically the same with that same 60's hairdo except a bit longer.
Nice to see she has a top ten hit over in the UK, Sad how her new cd can't be heard in her own country..

Nice to see a positive thread for a change. This should be a fantastic month ! I'll have to also make some changes to my schedule.

> {quote:title=mrroberts wrote:}{quote}We all have long given up trying to figure out the story. Bogart's performance and the witty lines are what make this flick ( and the gals too, Dorothy Malone especially).
There is a newer version made in the 70's. It stars Robert Mitchum and the location is moved to the UK. In this film they make the plot a lot easier to follow. There are certain parts like the young guy who moved the body being gay that obviously couldn't be shown back then.
Its not at the level of the original of course. But, if you watch it, then watch the original it will begin to make a lot of sense. I actually understand it now....believe it or not !

Absolutely ! Especially when its back to back.
The bits of the new cd I've heard weren't bad either.

I tend to love films set in that interwar period . So make mine a double of that good German brew

Maybe this capt. should just write his book and hand it out to people for free ? He was there and he would know. Maybe he was the only sober person around.
We also don't know why he didn't tell until now. I did hear it was a deathbed confession type thing. Maybe he just wants to clear his conscience. You can't guess until we know more.

I'm not so much of a snob and I don't need to see Casablanca everyday either. Many films that weren't rated very well were very entertaining to me. I like the variety. I would add the 60's also to that parameter. And also newer films set in the classic era also.
We all have our own opinions. There is no one standard nor should there be one. Open your mind and just enjoy the channel, life is too short to gripe. Be happy and gay, like they say in the movies

I'm still holding out for a TCM2 devoted to those films and so many others. 100 years of film is just too much for one channel !

Remember, the back story about Lula Mae basically took care of Fred until they met Doc and he went off to the Military. I can't see Marilyn taking care of anyone except herself frankly. In her films its always about her one way or another.
At least with Audrey's portrayal comes across to me as survivor who made the best of her life as she could. Marilyn would just seem like life washes over her and she just does what the men want of her.
I believe she possibly could have done it wouldn't have had the depth nor the lasting power of Audrey. I have a friend who frames pictures for a living. He just did a couple of "BaT" door hangers for someone a few weeks ago. I know quite a few young people just recently discovering this film. I think that says something.

I always try to focus on the positive. This channel is my favorite for days off when I can just sit and watch film after film. And this is my favorite month when I can take time and really learn about a specific actor by watching several of their films.
And this is not the closed group some might think it to be. I have some young people I work with in their early 20's. This is their first SUTS and they need to see the Grants,Bogarts, Davis' and so on to understand the quality of their work. See how movie making was long before they were born.
I also love how I can see people like Goddard, Dvorak whom I had never heard of but, will get to see in a few moments. Not just That same AFI list over and over. Throw some new people in the mix and they do . I just love it

I think some people just like to be contrary to get attention. Well, Ann's on so I have to go now !

AMC has them locked up until December 31, 2019.
And magically has The Godfather going all day on Brandos TCM day. 4 Hours with commercials !!

When I was a kid in the late 70's we had a UHF station here in Los Angeles ch.52. As I got home from grammar school they would show Little Rascals, Our Gang, My Little Margie etc... and me and my friends would never miss it.
GSN used to show "black and white overnight" Showing the old game shows like "What's my line", "To tell the truth" and so on.
I believe the market is there for those classic programs. They just have trouble getting sponsors.

This nature does work against me as I found it difficult for me to believe in Robert Preston truly wanting the librarian in The Music Man because he made me believe in him so powerfully in Victor / Victoria
a) Maybe he's just that good an actor.
One doesn't preclude the other. Maybe he swung both ways ??I loved V / V btw !
-
I only watch the early Doris Day films so I know what the OP means. "Young man with a Horn" was on not too long ago actually. "My dream is yours" is another one I enjoyed.
I'm not looking for cinematic brilliance. Just a fun time watching old films. Those 60's films really aren't my type. But, since we share a birthday, maybe I can understand why she made them.

Comcast moves TCM to higher tier. It costs $89.00 per month extra

Growing up in Long Beach California, we had by far the worst cable system ever. I will never ever be a part of any cable company unless I have absolutely no other choice. I might just watch on youtube before cable !
I have had Dish Network for more than a decade. Never had a complaint.
Time Warner has been sending letters every two weeks begging me to bundle.
Problem #1 The average person can't divide all the different bills to see if they really are getting a deal.
Problem #2 When you find a better deal, good luck getting them to "unbundle" it for you. Its a struggle as they once again beg you to stay and want to charge you to separate those bills. I would never get all my services from one company or companies that are connected. That's my leverage and I plan to keep it.
The only movie channel on a higher level is Fox and that's no real loss at all
