Okay, this one should be easy for anyone who is a fan of badly made movies:
Which director left in a scene where the actor had a difficult time opening and closing the door in the movie as is because he only took the first take and:
THE ACTOR/CHARACTER MIGHT HAVE HAD DIFFICULTY ANYWAY in real life with a door.
Hint: one of the frequent posters in this forum is a big fan of this director.

I just saw Gene in a TV Movie called "Prescription Murder" and it had Lt. Columbo in it and that seemed to start the "Columbo" TV series.
But that doesn't seem to fit what you are looking for?
Actually, I think it does, because a lot of detective TV series of the 1970s shared a Movie of the Week night such as Columbo, MacMillan and Wife, etc.

Yes, Night People was one of the last movies - still missing a couple - of Gregory Peck's career for me to see for the first time.
