Monday daytime is RICHARD WIDMARK. There are some great films listed. There is also the unfortunate attempt to recreate Spellbound with The Cobweb - superb cast that is really awful. You have to see this film to understand how much an opportunity was missed.

Monday: In the evening, our theme is TCM Canada, so ther eare some differences between the two countries. I would like this post to focus on the daytime: RICHARD WIDMARK MOVIES Most of these films are great films. The Cobweb is not. You have to see The Cobweb to understand how badly a great cast was wasted.

Yes, Silver Screen Classics focuses on movies no more recently made than 1969. They air them often. They also air movie shorts in between movies. SSC was the way I got to see Fear in the Night starring Deforest Kelley.

A good example of what Princess of Tap means is Bobby Darin. Bobby Darin idolized Sinatra. he wanted to sing like Sinatra. But there already was Sinatra. Bobby Darin knew he had a short time to live because he had suffered from and nearly died from Rheumatic fever as a child. This disease shortens your life span. Bobby died on the operating table for open heart surgery at the age of 37. How do you become Frank Sinatra's type of singer when your days are numbered and you ar living in the rock and roll era? Well, you first enter rock and roll. You write a song called Splish Splash I Was Taking a Bath. It becomes a smash hit and you are a teen idol. You make teen movies with Sandra Dee to whom you will be married. Gradually, you start to write songs that are in between rock and jazz like the song Dream lover. Only then do you record Mac the Knife. When Frank Sinatra hears your version of mac the Knife - remember you are Bobby Darin - Sinatra is so impressed that when he records his version of mac the Knife with the Quincy Jones band, he lists in the middle of the song people whose version of Mac the Knife he admires- INCLUDING BOBBY DARIN. That is when Boby Darin knew he'd accomplished his goal.

I must (must I?) confess that My Way is a bit overdone. It would have been nice if Frank Jr. had been able to sing it before he died. Of course, Paul Anka wrote the English language lyrics for his idol - Sinatra.

But the point was - he was NOT ITALIAN, which seemed to be of importance to Spence in talking about the actors and director involved. But thanks for the correction - with the spelling I thought he was French. I certainly did not know he was NOT Italian until after he died. Why, I don't know. I guess it never occurred to me to look up his family history. Interesting that his sister made The Big Heat as Glenn Ford's wife. Of course, me being a fan of Glenn Ford MIGHT hae something to do with the fact that I brought up this film in the first place.
