  1. That will be for later months. One month at a time.
  2. Re: blackface routines. I cringe all the time and I generally leave the room when they happen. Except for The Jazz Singer that I watched for it being the "first talkie" I generally avoid everything Al Jolson did because blackface was the reason he was famous. I think of the fact that he and Ruby Keeler were married every time I see her on screen. Torch Song was a one time viewing for me.
  3. This is one of the few 21st century movies of mainstream Hollywood that I was excited to see. I found it fascinating because I knew a lot of the stories behind these people, but to see it was great. It gave me insight into what Hughes really was like and how easily Hepburn and Tracy could have ended the privacy agreement between Hollywood press and the Hollywood studios. Instead it was Sinatra and Gardener.
  4. Oh, I didn't suggest the wine club is bad in general, just that the time of morning is weird. And once we get on the subject of unfortunate pairing, well I can give examples. I would much rather they aired wine club ads rather than actual ads that are not TCM sponsored - if that can raise money for them. But yes, I am showing some biases that might get this thread derailed into the off topic section like the one slaytonf started by accidently mentioning the tea party. I have a half brother from my father's first marriage who was abusive and well, he's a recovering alcoholic. I refuse to be in the same room with him. I skipped my father's funeral to avoid him. Unfortunately he lives in the same city. I was going to change my last name for my 40th birthday, but everyone in town knows who I am anyway. So I just dyed my hair. I take medication that precludes me drinking alcohol. I was never interested in it anyway. But I do try to have some around in case of fainting.
  5. 8) One of his earliest appearances on television was on an episode of The Twilight Zone where he played Death.
  6. 6) Although he made only two movies with Paul Newman, they are considered one of the most popular screen teams in history. The movies were Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and The Sting.
  7. 8) This movie is told in flashbacks to a newcomer in the area, as is often found with movies about people who are dead.
  8. Yes, it is Azure. James Cameron does a lot both true and fictional about The Titanic. Your thread.
  9. Yes, Limey if you want to look at it that way................. Breakfast at Tiffany's has Audrey and George drinking champagne before breakfast.
  10. I'd hate to think how low my total would be if you did a page on Hammer horror. Steve would have a huge total. Mine wold be -2?
  11. Well then, that adds anther 5 musicals I've seen on your page, CMR.
  12. Swithin: I think biopics generally do take some liberties for dramatic effect and to make the audiences go see the movies. There was discussion about the movie Beloved Enemy with a renamed Michael Collins having a happy ending instead somehow belittling the fight for Irish Independence, but I pointed out that the introduction and conclusion TCM gave told us that there was a more realistic ending filmed but that audiences didn't like it. Now only the one ending exists. Regarding ANNA AND THE KING: This killing off of her son really bothered me and I hated it. Originally, I saw this long after I saw The King and I and wondered if the musical had changed real life because it was a musical. I was happy to find out the truth. Thanks for your thoughts.
  13. Actually, Kid it is the quality of the print that TCM owns. Everyone said that when it aired before and several people could not get through the film because of it. It may be the only type of print that exists. Edited for weird grammar.
  14. I know it is only Tuesday, but now that Bogie has listed choices for all four categories I feel that I better stat listing movies that have been recommended that I have not seen which interest me as I think I may have to make another to-see list later in the week. wrong -he has not but all the more reason for me to list my to-see list now ! As mentioned in the conversation about genre between me, Bogie, and Kay, this is not necessarily a list of films I have not seen overall, but just movies that I think I would enjoy: This list is from memory. People may not have mentioned these: 1934 Movies To-See: Broadway Bill David Harum The Affairs of Cellini Cleopatra The Age of Innocence The Girl From Missouri The House of Rothchild The Man Who Reclaimed His Head La Signoia De Tutti Edited for incorrect time line of Bogie's picks.
  15. 5) Most people who hear that Merle Oberon was nominated for only a single Academy Award might guess that it was for this film. Actually, it was for The Dark Angel.
  16. What Canadian director spends a lot of time directing movies and documentaries about vessels that have sunk for various reasons.
  17. 2) Robert Redford started the Sundance film Festival, named after his character in the film Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.
  18. 10) Shelly Winters died on January 14th, 2006 at 85. Next: Robert Redford
  19. I did not know he was Canadian! If I did, maybe I would have gotten it.....
  20. Hey, Debra I live in the pacific time zone. Anything to sell stuff right. I bet that at some point wine club selections WILL include movies like The Lost Weekend Young Man with a Horn I'll Cry Tomorrow Biopics about every actor or actress who died of alcoholism This is sick. If you must have movies paired with wine, can't they put it in the evenings to suggest that people watching TCM aren't watching TCM as an accompaniment to getting drunk all day if you don't have a job outside of your home?
  21. Thanks for the information, Lawrence. In Coal Miner's Daughter, both Spacek and the actress who played Patsy Cline (sorry, brain freeze) did their own singing.
  22. Tonight I will be at rehearsal and I've already seen Frenchman's Creek, but I won't be back until after the start of the 9pm Pacific film Who Done It ? I will have to record that.
  23. Humoresque is wonderful 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea is a Jules Verne book, is it not? I'm guessing that is why. I t should as such be put into Science Fiction/Fantasy, in my opinion, because of the author.
  24. Flora Robson played several monarchs too. Lawrence, who was portrayed in the movie Sweet Dreams? I have The Helen Morgan Story recorded and waiting for me.
