  1. Thanks for letting me know. I enjoy most Warren Oates films. I have lost count of the times I have seen Badlands or In the Heat of the Night. Usually I enjoy his performance even if I do not enjoy the movie. There were a lot of my favourites in the movie. There wasn't enough Robert Ryan in the movie. I was really expecting more of a final showdown between him and William Holden-another favourite of mine. I've seen a lot of Borgnine too. It has been on my to-see list for a long time.
  2. I just saw THE WILD BUNCH for the first and only time. Disgusting and depressing. Those are two and a half hours that I will never get back. How many horses were injured or killed on this movie?
  3. This spotlight allowed me to see a lot of movie that I had never seen before. Some I have recorded waiting for me. The greatest gem for me was Ivy.
  4. FAVOURITE MELODRAMAS: Written in the Wind Summer Place Summer of '42 The Magnificent Obsession
  5. Yes, I have always had a feeling of soap opera in the back of my mind when I think of melodrama.
  6. Spoiler about the water drinking............................ In my opinion, they knew that Deacon would drink the "water" because they had built him up to feel superior and that if he did drik it, it would prove his testimony all along. Deacon's character was smug-and smug people are predictable in how they will react in the same type of circumstances.
  7. I just saw this movie for the first time this year and wondered how I managed to miss it thus far. I love this movie. It has got great acting, great courtroom drama-I am a big fan of courtroom dramas - and lots o plot twists especially with Vaughn. Adam West of TV Batman fame is in the beginning of the movie as the man everyone including Newman thinks is his father. This character dies shortly after getting married. Melodramas for me depend really upon the actual movie in question. Some I love, and others make me cringe. I'll list some favourites in a separate post than this reply.
  8. That sentence should read : "not in real estate or banking did not know the terms that were used..." I accidently deleted part o the sentence.
  9. Yes, I did. I knew ahead of time that it was a movie for which I would need to be quite alert so I could understand all the information about the housing market and terms in the financial world for which I don't know. I went with a group of people. I thought that I would go into the movie with the attitude that it was going to look at the world economy similar to how All the President's Men looked at how the Watergate crisis eventually led to the resignation o President Nixon- in other words, as a mystery/puzzle. I love mysteries and puzzles. I also love bio-pics. Several times in the movie, whenever certain terms would be introduced that people not in real estate, banking etc. would be used, the movie would eliminate the fourth wall and someone will look straight into the camera and explain these terms with examples of the "everyday" world that the average person would understand. A chef explaining about repackaging old fish into new food, people gambling on whether or not someone would win at a gambling table who then had people betting on that bet and others, made terms that made me feel clueless at first suddenly I understood. After seeing this film I very happy that I do not actually live in Vancouver, that I do not rent a house and rely upon a landlord who may default on a mortgage, that I own an a apartment that has space, and that I do not have to try to find somewhere to move. It's a very scary film in that it is looking at a real world situation that is continuing to get worse. People are becoming homeless everywhere. Steve Carrell is the best actor in this movie and it is too bad he did not get a nomination
  10. I would love to see Trumbo. The only films I have seen from 2015 are The Big Short (just saw) and Walk in the Woods. I'm am considering seeing Spot Light.
  11. Sounds like fun. 1930 this week. Okay, I have seen a lot of movies from the 1930s, so that means I'll be able to take part as time goes on. Great! 14. Dan Duryea hasn't really been mentioned yet by anyone in these lists but he made a huge number of noir classics. He made a lot of westerns too. My favourites of his film noir career: Too Late For Tears The Woman in the Window Lady on a Train Scarlett Street Criss Cross
  15. Thanks for all the help in giving me advice how to get the movie Dark City. I can see now that the country of origin has to be changed every time I turn on my PC. There a huge number of movies on that site that I have either never seen or not seen in years.
  16. Thanks. There are two classic authors who had a birthday too, but is a bit off topic? Oh, I will just mention Charles Dickens anyway....
  17. I haven't tried all other postings, just the vault. We will see if I can find the film. Yes, there are several rights issues between US and Canada, I'll let you know
  18. February 7th: The only classic actor I could find who had a birthday today is Eddie Bracken.
  19. I love TEAHOUSE OF THE AUGUST MOON, That's a great quote.
  20. Flynn and Niven started out as good friends. Eventually they parted ways. I haven't read Niven's autobiography. I'd love to read it.
  21. How did my edited post end up the post that was the review of this film and my edit end up an entirely different post? Many thanks for Speedy giving me the shortcuts. Now if I could figure out why I could not just delete my repeated post???????? Oh, dear. Can't I just submit a handwritten review?
  22. Somehow I published the same thing twice when all I wanted to do was edit the spelling of "actresses." I wanted to delete the whole thing but did not know how.
  23. Oh, then I could not get a copy of it. I would like to see anything with Lizabeth Scott in it. Thanks for the further information. The later movie was the only one available to me.
