  1. Anyone with such nefarious pitchforking plans would suffer agonizing death at the jaws of Asta... at least, just as soon as he's finished dealing with this viscous looking hydrant....

    astatangle.gif

Yes, Asta was never quite "there" for Nick when there was danger about:

Hiding under furniture when Nick would say that Asta would attack

Hiding in the other room when Nick broke the window with his Christmas present

However, Asta was right there when someone tried to take the baby.....

  2. I totally get what you are saying James, about Fred as Sheldrake not being so different from many other characters in real life and in movies. I think the reason people find that part so "smarmy" is that he is so sanctimonious while at the same time being such a cad, and so sure of himself.

That is why I find him smarmy, CaveGirl, and likely why limey does as well. There are plenty of men who are cads who don't pretend they are anything but cads.

It reminds me of the joke that goes:

Gentlemen may prefer blondes, but then again, I'm not a gentleman.

  3. There was a lovely tribute that Mariah Carey did in Paris.

Stevie Wonder was too upset to sing on camera when talking to Anderson Cooper on CNN and that is quite understandable. Too be able to sing on the spot like that when emotions are fresh like that is too much.

Perhaps when some time has passed Stevie Wonder will be able to sing in Prince's honour.

  4. Based upon LawrenceA's and Darkblue's comments on The Deer Hunter, that movie I now on my list of to-see films.  I could not get through Platoon. And Father Sheen's Vietnam movie which was a version of Heart of Darkness I got through because I insisted  to myself that I must watch the film where Martin Sheen nearly died.

  5. OOPS, another I 4-got & a fine film (***-out of four stars) & not terrific like *O. Stone's "JFK"-(NOTE: this viewer always judges a movie by how well it's executed-(no pun intended) & not content/it's opinion, etc Because the latter was powerfully made, but I didn't particularly agree w/*Stone on what happened in real life Nov. 22nd, 1963) It did take home richly deserved "statuette's' for it's Cinematography & especially it's Film Editing)

But, I wager many never saw or even heard of "Bobby???" (2006)(***) & only hit ($10m.) Emilio Estevez helmed & starred in it & he had a huge cast to direct here (*Hopkins, Belafonte, S. Stone, Demi Moore, L. Fishburne, *Helen Hunt, Martin Sheen & lots more!)

It only took place at the now raised-(hate that silly saying) "Ambassador Hotel" Which all knew was being torned-down & had to rush production

But this one garnered not a single *Oscar nomination

I got your email Spence about this thread.

Just a reminded that I have changed my screen name to ColumboFan, but I am still GregoryPeckFan.

  6. I did not know that Jerome Kern "Lusitania" story, so thanks, GPF!

The Jerome Kern biography can be seen in a movie that just aired on TCM called Till The Clouds Roll By.  Jerome kern is portrayed in the movie by Robert Walker. That is the same Robert Walker who was in Strangers on a Train.

  7. Well, I don`t know about other MeTV stations, but my affiliate out of Bellingham is not airing a bunch of episodes of Remmington Steele in honour of Doris Roberts.  However, I understand that her Everybody loves Raymond family got together to remember her.

Overnight MeTV aired an episode of Columbo which I recorded.  Another one will air Sunday night

  8. I agree with some of your sentiments, re: variety of early of German titles shown should have been greater.

However, your thread title of "For Calgary to Hitler" throws things out of whack a bit.

The program was titled "From Caligari to Hitler", and a few Canadians will tell you that there is a distinct difference between Calgary and Caligari.

Yes, I don`t  know if the title of the thread was chosen in the same ironic manner that CaveGirl does, or whether the Op was using spellcheck, or if if the OP is suggesting that Canadians were Nazis.

In which case, let me assure the OP that Canadians joined WWII OPPOSITE the Nazis in 1939 - United states did not join the war until 1941. Not that they would not have joined the allies anyway, but I just point out to the OP that Calgary is in Alberta.

I live in British Columbia.  That is Canada.

  9. THE LOCKET has a wonderful structure of interlocking flashbacks.

RAW DEAL is the unusual film where the bad girl (Claire Trevor, of course) narrates the flashbacks.

In fact, The locket is all flashbacks except for a small amount of the film.

  10. Sorry, but "We Are The World" is second-rate to "Do They Know It's Christmas" in every way.

And there won't be snow in Africa this Christmas..

The biggest gift they get this year is life......

Thank God it's them and not you.....................................

  11. Lorna - Have you read The Bat as well as see the film?

    RE: The Spiral Staircase title:

I remember that when I heard there was a movie by that name that I thought it was the other mystery.  Then I realized it wasn't.

I think you have to think of the lighting of the cellar the same way you do.  They *may* have had gaslight. But either the gaslight or the candles, only.

  12. JUST FOR LARFS...

On October 1st this year I want to dress up like this:

    6b2103d36c97eff59be01e49d6c52463.jpg

And make a crawl of the local shelters offering "as much as it takes" for a solid black cat and then inquiring if they know where I can find a goat as well.

And just for larfs, they might throw you in jail....

  13. Last night I watched Blonde Cheat which I had taped earlier. It starred Joan Fontaine in the title role who is an actress who is hired - along with fellow actors - to try to get backing from Cecil Kelloway for a new show by trying to pretend that Joan is wearing valuable earrings that are insured by Cecil's company so that his employee will not marry Cecil's daughter.

That is about all I want to say about the plot as it is not that long a movie and overstating the plot might ruin it.

Fun film. It is just over an hour long.

  14. I finally saw Blazing Saddles (free HBO this weekend). I found it kind of unbearable. I liked some of the  puns and homages to Old Hollywood -- Hedy Lamarr, Olson and Johnson, Van Johnson, Patsy Kelly, etc.; but I don't like slapstick, and I found much of the movie dull. I did like the Yiddish-speaking Indians.

The switch to the Hollywood studio sets, which sounds like a fun idea, fell pretty flat.

I prefer Cat Ballou when it comes to comedy westerns.

  15. Hi, Spence. This GregoryPeckfan, now going under the name of Columbo.

    Gregory Peck was in more than one political film;

The Chairman is likely the one you are thinking about, although in Arabesque he and Sophia Loren were trying to stop an assassination as well.

    My favourite political movies, regardless of whether or not they have already been mentioned;

    All the President's Men

    The Best Man

    Abe Lincoln in Illinois

Three Days of the Condor (based upon a book called Six Days of the Condor)

    Seven Days in May

    Dr. Strangelove

    Fail Safe

    Mr. Smith Goes to Washington

    The Manchurian Candidate (original)

    A Face in the Crowd

    Day of the Jaekal

  16. Considering your complaints about the yellow press, why should be any business of the public, or especially the state, if Prince wanted to medicate himself like this?

You had me confused with Princess, Fedya. I was talking about the yellow press.  Not Princess.  And in general, I talk about the difference between the world of today and the world of classic Hollywood when the press worked hand in hand with the studios to project a certain screen image.

And keep in mind I am not talking about all journalism.

You have to report a story.  But there are people that look at the entire life and career of a person who died (real journalism) and those who only talk about the scandalous death (yellow journalism).

Remember that when Michael Jackson died, the man who did a documentary about his home became famous because of that.

Edit: I had sent you a pm trying to explain that GregoryPeckfan and Columbo fan wa sthe same and that might be way you got my comments confused with another person's.

  17. I just watched "Summer Stock" for the millionth time (can't get enough of Judy and "Get Happy," such a great number.)

Anyway... I'd like to pitchfork Phil Silvers' character. I'd also like to throw a big ole pitchfork at the "Heavenly Music" number (I hate that number. Probably Gene Kelly's worst) but I'd like the pitchfork to miss all the dogs. They're the best part. Gene himself can't get hurt (he's my #2 after Errol) but his bumpkin character gets a pitchfork.

Gene was very close to Judy and protected her.  He made sure that on the set of The Pirate when ever she could not come to the set the set that he was blamed instead.  HE had a sprained ankle. HE was  feeling sick, etc.
