It's a little difficult for me to "pitchfork" certain characters because I have too much of a liking and respect for the actor. I know, one must make the distinction between the actor and the character. Most people here really like actors like George Sanders and Dan Duryea, but they could be regular character candidates for "pitchforking". But I just don't think I could carry out the sentencing of the "pitchfork". Sorry Dargo, old friend, but I guess I feel the same about old man Potter. I like Lionel B. too much as an actor. And he played too many likeable guys in other films. One guy who I (and a few others) "pitchforked" some time ago was Max Showalter / Casey Adams. After a while I felt a little guilty about that, my main reason for singling him out was the character (Jean Peters' husband) he played in NIAGARA . I always make that character association with him whenever I see him in another film. So can I "pitchfork" Max? Yeah, I guess I can (at least as that character). P.S. Anyone thinking of pitchforking William Powell has to go through me first.

Oh, I would never pitchfork William Powell in anything he did. No pitchfork to Mr. Powell.....
By the way, I recorded Mr. Roberts the night of Jack's films and it is still waiting for me to watch for the 100th time or so.
I love that film. And the only thing that gets the pitchfork in that film is the palm tree....

I am a major fan of both of these actors;
their films together, their films apart, his films before he met her , and her films after he died.
Thy are my favourite real life on and off screen couple.
My favourite film of theirs together is Key Largo, which is also the favourite of mine of many of those in Key largo.

Hopefully mbear662 has been reported by multiple members--spammers Don't count as such, IMO!
Oh, I have done so. They do take up a lot of time, though.

I have nothing against the ocean liner. I was speaking of that old
barnacle encrusted parasite who lives in Buckingham Palace part
of the time.
Which one? Are you talking about 90-year old Queen's husband? or her son?
Those of us who are under the Queen's rule want to know.

A reminder that Arabesque will be airing on Turner Classic Movies on Thursday, April 28th as part of the evening's look at Sophia Loren which starts with the interview she gave at the 2015 Film Festival where she was interviewed by her son.
Arabesque was a follow up by director Stanley Donen to the movie Charade. Gregory Peck's role was originally offered to Cary Grant who turned it down.

Part of this thread is actually sitting in the "Strange Truths" thread because I mentioned that Fred McMurray only got the role of Sheldrake because Paul Douglas died and it was quoted and the focus of the quote as the character and three of us discussed whether or not Sheldrake should get a pitchfork for several posts before we realized we were posting in the Strange Truths thread instead of the Pitchfork thread.

I also loved MacMurray's demonstration of his acting chops in The Apartment - but, if ever a sleazeball character deserved a 3 pronged piercing, it was Mr Sheldrake (when can I have my Angry Mob Membership card, ColumboFan?). Part of the genius of that film was casting Lemmon in full vulnerable, nice-guy mode for contrast.
However, I found the continual punctuation of his characters speech with 'Baby' in Double Indemnity jarring/corny - after this thread, a mental image of nice shiny pitchfork which no doubt find it's way into my mind's eye, at those points in the dialog...
Membership cards are delivered via email, limey - or by private messenger.
We here at Angry Mob make sure that everyone gets satisfaction the pitchforking business.

It seems that we all have different criteria for what warrants a paddlin' err... pitchforkin'. Sorry too much Simpsons lately.
I've been going more with what characters get on my nerves in the film.
Others have been choosing characters who were unsavory people.
Others are choosing characters who are an against-type role for the actor.
I don't think it's fair to choose to pitchfork a character because the actor wanted to branch out and take on a variety of different roles--unless of course, you really didn't care for their character and/or portrayal.
With Fred MacMurray, I loved his portrayal of Mr. Sheldrake in The Apartment. He was so delightfully smarmy and a complete cad. Walter Neff in Double Indemnity was another departure for him and now I can't imagine anyone else in the role. He was so smooth and believable as Barbara Stanwyck's lover and accomplice. He also conveyed great vulnerability when he realizes that Stanwyck has used him.
I also loved Clark Gable's dancing in Idiot's Delight. Sure he is no Fred Astaire or Gene Kelly, but his "Puttin' on the Ritz" was fun and completely unexpected. Plus, I love the song and Gable looked good in his top hat and tails.
I'd like to pitchfork characters who are annoying:
Butterfly McQueen--every character she's ever played.
The girl with the screechy baby voice in The Apartment.
Andy Devine in Torrid Zone.
Oh, I did not mind seeing Clark Gable dance in Idiot's Delight. I would watch him recite limericks while dancing the rhumba if he had done it.
I only mentioned what his fans of the time did - they wrote in and complained that the King of Hollywood was not supposed to dance.
I love Lady in the Lake as well. I love Robert Montgomery, period. He directed that movie by the way. He had directed parts of the war movie They Were Expendable - he was a bigger star than Wayne at the time and got top billing -when John Ford was ill.
As for Fred, he did not want that role in The Apartment. He was fantastic. But he had already played against type in Double Indemnity and had to be talked into it by Billy Wilder.

They probably think it makes them harder to detect. That's if they're even aware that they turned it on.
There are two of them. Limey beat me to the one on private again. Friday nights...

Tonight is the first time I've noticed a spammer putting his account on the "private" setting. Now we'll never know what he's up to!

Really.
I had my account on private for a while and found out spent more time on this site than I did when it was not on private. We can still report him/her though.
Maybe the spammer thought that if the account was on private the spam could not be deleted?

1941 Hitchcock movies;
In preparation for the switch to 1941 movies in Bogie56's Favourite Performances Thread
Hitchcock made 2 movies in 1941: Suspicion, and Mr. and Mrs. Smith
Mr. and Mrs. Smith is a comedy not to be confused with the recent Pitt/Jolie movie. The second film is NOT a remake.
Mr. and Mrs. Smith starred Carole Lombard and Robert Montgomery. Hitch wanted to work with Lombard and she was a comedy actress. So he did the only straight comedy - no deaths - of his career. He planned to eventually do a suspense film with her but death intervened.
Here are my nominees for my FAVOURITE HITCHCOCK PERFORMANCE, MALE OR FEMALE:
Carole Lombard in Mr. and Mrs.Smith
Robert Montgomery in Mr. and Mrs. Smith
Cary Grant in Suspicion
Joan Fontaine in Suspicion
Nigel Bruce in Suspicion
Leo G. Carrol in Suspicion
WINNER:
NIGEL BRUCE IN SUSPICION -
It is my favourite Nigel Bruce performance

btw, i hope my purple font isn't offending.
it just seems right for this thread.
I'll give it up in a bit.
This shows how badly this thread has gotten out of hand with people trying to explain themselves.
Prince did Purple Rain.
We are allowed to have separate colours in our fonts.
Why should you need to ask if you are offending anyone.

Let me clarify what I wrote but I think it's quite clear - - I simply reference that those two actors that committed suicide. We're not talking about suicide here. What I was talking about had to do with the use of pharmaceuticals in today's society and particular issue with Prince being at Walgreens.
I was really using Judy Garland and Elvis Presley as an example of people who habitually relied upon for virtuous for whatever reasons mix them with alcohol or other things and then had accidental deaths. This also apparently happened to the actress singer Dorothy Dandridge.
At this point it's sheer speculation if that had happened to Prince.
So let me make it clear one more time I'm not I wasn't talking about suicide or pre-existing medical conditions that have to do with physical disabilities.
I was talking about pharmaceutical misuse in American society today and take me back to Prince the last time people saw him in public was at Walgreens.
I hope I have made myself clear.
I understood you completely. But as the post I made was then quoted by someone else - it is still there I believe although I have now put this person on ignore- and she told me that I sounded like Prince had taken drugs and everyone "liked" her comment, I had to spend several hours explaining myself.
I then decided that the best thing you can do is to follow the advice of moderators on this site and put people who push your buttons on ignore.
EDIT: The post was edited and no longer is what it said.

It'll be too bad if Prince's death leads to even more of a crackdown on prescription medications, considering the damage the crackdown is already doing to people who have difficulty getting the effective pain medications they need.
Moving the effective cold medications behind the counter in an attempt to combat meth production did diddly-squat, and yet they haven't repealed the utterly failed policy.
(I should also add that my sister has MS, but is not yet to the point where she's going to need those pain medications. Thankfully.)
Living in Canada we have some medications paid for through public health care plus some meds are paid for if you are on disability pensions.
We are having quite a time with the medical marijuana situation here.
And your post points out another important factor about Prince's death.
Regardless of how Prince died, whenever someone famous dies the media frenzy is such that the buzzards who want to sell things love it. Just like when Robin Williams dies. Yellow journalists love it.
But does the general population lean anything beneficial or does it make it any easier for people to understand a medical condition?
People know a lot about Parkinson's because of Michael J. Fox.
AS for M.S., I know that everyone wanted to be in the hospital to get the last moments of the life of MS sufferer and Mouseketeer Annette Funecello. She had no privacy at all.

Nevermind. I don't want to derail the thread with arguments on drug policy. I'll let things get back to Prince.
Hey, Larry.
Things are going to get derailed all the time. Even when we don't mean them to be.
I saw on the Noon news hour that there are several songs completed by Prince which may at some time be released. That would be wonderful.

But these were intentional.
Yes, She was pointing out examples of people who did not die of natural causes after I had mentioned that we should not mourn only people who die of natural causes.
George Sanders left a note to his sister that he was "bored."

What do you have against the former Cunard ocean liner, now floating quietly somewhere in Dubai?

Is a remake of Between Two Worlds using her in the offing, perhaps?
Now there is a movie that is rarely seen. Between Two Worlds is excellent.

Boyer and Sanders committed suicide.
Judy and Elvis were habitual users who probably used those barbiturates with whatever else they were drinking or whatever else they were doing. Habitually it just destroys the body anyway.
The real problem in this country is the fact that doctors prescribe pain killer medications like Pop Tarts to unsuspecting patients.
Doctors in this country are starting to appear to look like dope pushers. They're turning many of their patients in Junkies. And that's the Walgreens truth.
From what I hear, that's the last place anybody saw Prince, when he was at Walgreens. What was a big star like Prince doing at Walgreens? Why didn't he send one of his employees? That really has me puzzled.
Thank-you for pointing these facts out, Princess.
I am glad to see someone else point out these tragedies than just myself as I got "pitch-forked" for commenting upon the truth of many people's deaths.
Yes, Boyer committed suicide. His son had killed himself. He and his wife never got over this and he killed himself after she died.
Burt Reynolds who is still alive and has not mentioned why he is not going to be able to do the festival became HOOKED ON PAIN KILLERS AFTER HIS JAW WAS BROKEN. He had been hit with a real chair by an extra. He was supposed to be hit with a break away chair.
My point was - and yours too - is that it is sad that Prince died. How or why he died does not make it more or less justified in feeling grief.
I understand that Robert Young - who died of natural causes in his 90s - suffered his whole life from migraines that were so powerful he would cry himself to sleep.
