  1. I like BLACK NARCISSUS, but I have always thought it would be much better if the makers went ahead and just embraced the fact that it is a SUSPENSE THRILLER at heart, and not just given us that one hitchcockian scene near the end, but made the whole entire third Act of the film eerier, more taut, and downright scary.

This is kind of a weird complaint for me, because generally I don't like it when films sort of throw up their hands and go the SINGLE WHITE FEMALE route, but I feel like a real Thriller could have been pulled out of a film that settles too easily on being a drama and social and religious commentary.

This is the problem I have with some films the first time I see them and I am expecting them to be a separate genre than they actually are.

Once I get beyond this I am able to enjoy a lot of movies I could no before.

  2. You must have missed the post right under yours that mentions Stage Fright.

I actually like that movie better than many of Hitchcoco movies. I'm not a huge fan of his work though.

Yes, I did.  I might have written it while someone was posting it?  I don't know, but I find that this happens to me all the time in the games and trivia forum.  I type too slow.

  3. Great topic.

For films I've seen this past week:

    BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY'S: intentional

    'I don't think you're any fou-er than anyone else.'

    ?unintentional?

What is *not* said after George Peppard reads the telegram of Fred's death to Holly's Brazilian man:

Peppard reads out the telegram word for word including "Your husband and children."

The Brazilian never says "She's married and has children?"

  4. That is not Roddy McDowall.  It's Jacques Perrin in Costa-Gavras' film Z, which is airing as part of Gloria Steinem's guest programming stint.  You can see the same clip around 2:38 in this video of Oscar-winning foreign films:

Thanks for clearing that up.  I have not seen Z, and Roddy was the closest to my mind.  The two actors look alike.

  5. NEVER FEAR  - recorded as part of the Ida Lupino day.  I watched it last night for the first time.

This was directed by Ida and starred Rita Lupino.

I will not go into the plot much.  It is about a dancer who gets polio and wants to give up and meets people in a hospital who do not want to give up.

These are the types of movies I love to watch.  As a disabled woman who was born with cerebral palsy and who has days where I feel 500% disabled and days where I feel 0% disabled, watching movies about people who overcome obstacles with the vital willpower gives me strength to carry on whenever I have a setback.
