  1. A further comment about my interest in seeing all the films a favourite artist of mine has made regardless of the genre: I am a Martin Sheen fan. I have seen Apocalypse Now Redux on the big screen twice because he nearly died making that movie. The violence in that film is nauseating for me. But it was important for me to see it when it came to town.
  2. Hi, Kay. I am very glad that I saw the film, because I would like to see every movie Judy Garland ever made. It wasn't my problem that it was cheesy. It was that there was way too much football for me because I am not a fan of dangerous sports. Although I admit that I do watch sports movies when they star my favourites and when they are, say, within the context of another genre - for example I could not possibly be a fan of film noir and not watch boxing. But I simply don't like to watch potentially fatal sports. and there was not enough Judy for me. I love to be able to see rare movies at least once. I do thank you for alerting me to this movie as I had never heard of it before.
  3. Taylor's character got the cut...okay. I had the idea that both of them were injured in the film. I see this movie every now and then. Of course, for people who are unfamiliar with the film in general, the VIPs are all people who will be on a flight in the first class section hopefully, when weather forces everyone to just stay put. There are several subplots going on in this movie.
  4. Oh, yes, it is one of the bleakest noirs I have ever seen. It did indeed help the performance.
  5. 5) Dru married Dick Haynes and went to Hollywood with him. That is how she moved from stage to screen.
  6. There was some suggestion that there was something going on between the two which we don't see as the three apparently know each other very well. Buton does not realize that Taylor is really leaving for good an thinks she has accidently met Jourdan who is also taking the flight. However, the thing that is the most noticeable is the violence of Burton (Olivier) towards Taylor (Leigh) which included breaking a mirror and requiring cuts on his hand. There is also the idea of Jourdan (Finch) being used to being paid off to leave a woman alone and that he was really looking for someone to pay bills for him when he wasn't working. This flip flopping of Jourdan and the injury to Burton and the characters they are portraying is likely the reason why Taylor (Leigh) decided to stay with Burton (Oliver) over Jourdan (Finch).
  7. Well, this is more art imitating life, but it is well known that the love triangle in The V*I*P*S between the characters portrayed by Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, and Louis Jourdan are based upon the real life triangle between Vivian Leigh, Laurence Olivier and Peter Finch. Leigh was planning on running off with Finch and left a left a letter which Olivier found before they could get away. So rumour says....
  8. Yes, and I have discovered that I do not get it either. I live in British Columbia and our MeTV channel is from Bellinngham.
  9. 504 This is a great example of safety of helmets but lack of driving skills.....
  10. That is correct. The reason he got the nose job is because he did not like it. Then he would not get jobs. Sadly, he killed himself. This is according to fellow Welles actor Joseph Cotton. Your thread.
  11. This movie is not controversial, but it's source material is. And Then There Were None aka Ten Little Indians as written by Agatha Christie is based upon a poem about ten people dying called "Ten Little N-" She changed it. Of course, people tend to film this new group as Native Americans, but actually Indian is the correct them for people from India. I mention this since we are talking a lot about that word.
  12. Anthony Quinn and Ricardo Montalban have portrayed their own heritage of Mexicans often. Ricardo was the only legit Mexican to appear in a movie already mentioned here (I think.) It had mostly Italians playing Mexicans, plus Cyd Charisse from Texas, and Yvonne DeCarlo from Canada.
  13. They were a legit couple and came over from England to make movies with Hughes. They were already working in England and technically did not have to go to Hollywood, but that is what they wanted.Hughes wanted Jean badly and she wasn't interested. So he would punish her on the set by making Robert Mitchum repeatedly hit her in take after take. So finally Mitchum stopped and hit Hughes. It put a big strain on the marriage though and they were divorced. Simmons was unable to watch a restored screening of the movie as she started to cry and left the theatre.
  14. I'm a Martin Sheen fan. That is why I know. Ramon Estevez is Sheen's real name. Charlie (Carlos) is the youngest and the only one who took his father's screen name. He has 4 children with his wife. All are actors. Rene appeared in The West Wing opposite her father. Charlie and Emilio have worked together often with their father. Ramon Jr. appeared in a film with his brothers and fathers which is not very good, but it is the only one with all four of them together. It's a prison film.
  15. 2) Shane was the last movie for Jean Arthur who decided to retire from acting.
  16. Hi. Welcome to the boards. I love Douglas Fairbanks Sr. and Jr. Since you got the last answer correct, you get to post the next clue.
  17. 10) Gentlemen Prefer Blondes had a (likely) staged protest by non-blondes about how the movie was unfair to brunettes and redheads. NEXT: SHANE
  18. SPAM IS IN THE HOUSE AND IT LOOKS LIKE IT IS INTERESTED IN SOME TRIVIA......
