OK, our Canadian in question was known for dog food commercials and Thanksgiving Day parade hosting.
One of his big roles was on TV (one of the first shows in color) where he had 3 wives who all died but each one gave him a son.

Hint: One of his most prolific roles had his wives kind of mirroring the drummers in "This is Spinal Tap"
