In the US the movie was released as "The Black Cat" (1934) but then changed to "The House of Doom" for the British release since a black cat is considered a sign of good luck over there.

Well Conrad Veidt doesn't seem to fit all the clues but he is German and did make movies with at least Joan Crawford and Vivian Leigh.
His first movie wasn't a classic but early on he did appear in in the classic "The Cabinet of Dr Caligari".
