  1. I agree=(rarely) with Michael on it being a masterpiece, but think he's overstating the fact that it's the main problem destroying this country Some displays it though He also outright & vocally predicted Hillary Clinton would win in a landslide over Trump
  2. Unlike *Bogey & Bacall, who had another production all planned Melville Goodwin, USA these 2 did not
  3. (*-Always denites an Oscar winner) First got one of topbilled's wonderful e mail notices-(daily) that Sea of Grass was on today, or now on demand However of the 9 the dynamic duo did it's probably the weakest & just ok (**1/2) Who's seen the 1947 western? Part of the problem maty have been *Tracy's problems with method filmmaker *Elia Kazan during filming They did not get along, yet *Spence often got along with other method men (NOTE: *Olivier on the other hand seemed to truly dislike them & even mocked Marilyn Monroe about her recent acting classes during 1957's Prince and the Showgirl) *The Great: Spencer Tracy (l900-l967) & *Katharine Hepburn-(l907-2003) as most know first met at M-G-M by accident though, alongside the Thalberg bldg-(still there) (I even got many pictures when there of actual area, now Sony) She had virtually been stalking as to where he was since she got there, wanting him for The Philadelphia Story-(in *Jimmy Stewart's only Oscar winning role) but could never locate him, then he was here in FL in the everglades shooting The Yearling in '41, but the production was scrubbed *Kate had idolized him since studying 1936's Fury & he was never much on compliments or emotion, she often said "I guess he liked me, he kept me around so long" unquote Below is there 9 motion pictures & trivia> 1942 Woman of the Year (M-G-M) (****-stars!) (she was nominated but not him & it won an Academy Award for it's script) 1942 Keeper of he Flame (MGM) (a heavy drama/mystery) & good (***) but not great 1945 Without Love (Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer) (a comedy with serious moments) (***) 1947 Sea of Grass-(SEE ABOVE) & one of only 3 Westerns he made, technically including How the West Was Won in '63) (TRIVIA: The one & only time she got top-billing) 1948 State of the Union (M-G-M) (terrific political comedy-drama & helmed by Capra) )***1/2) 1950 Adams Rib (MGM) (Most agree this is where the duo really hit their stride & the best they made together So many great moments & I've always felt that yrs leading Oscar winner *Judy Holliday really deserved attention for this as well as s. actress) (4 BIG STARS!) 1952 Pat & Mike (M-G-M) (my personal runner-up favorite they did. Aldo Ray almost steals the show though CHERCE, or is it CHERSE?) (4 stars!) 1957 Desk Set (Fox) (the one I first saw as a kid around 1980 on late night tv & terrific it is on every level (***1/2) & of course 1967's Guess Who's Coming to Dinner (by far their biggest $B.O.$ smash & most AMPAS nominations (10), a lotta milestones with his grand finale here His biggest salary at $270,000-(NOTE: though *The King Gable got $750,000 for his exit in The Misfits (l96l) The confusing pt is how could they spend that much on him, but not get insurance because of his awful health? Another thing he earned is 9th & of course final Oscar nomination-(posthumously) for yrs a record for actors & I bet he was within 1 to 2 votes of winner *Rod Steiger in In the Heat of the Night for it. It was only about 17 days after the wrapped he went) She won one of her amazing all leading Oscars, but most agree it was for the both of them, not among her best works, like the following yrs magnificent Lion in Winter) also won for it's writing THANX
  4. And just think his *Hamlet-(though ironically on tcm right now & great fir what it is) defeated one of the all-time greats in The Treasure of the Sierra Madre???
  5. Re-watched a 1983 tv movie based in fact & ironically starring Mr Noir & Mr RKO Robert Mitchum A Killer in the Family (***) online, it's grainy but you can easily find entire film, he was 66 then & same year he made the epic & popular mini-series The Winds of War (**1/2) (NOTE: It's sequel 1989's War and Rememberance was much better (***1/2) & with Jane Seymour. This guy he plays makes Max Cady & The Preacher in the brilliant Night of the Hunter seem like choirboys though & really happened James Spader &Eric Stoltz co star & very young at that For MITCHUM fans a must to search for, just punch it in
  6. TCM just re-aired *Olivier's masterful 1946 Henry V-(another of his ten nominations by the way) & was awarded a special statue for his achievement. But I respect it, but just cannot ever get into Shakespeare, his Richrd III (l956) is easily among the greatest performances ever given by an actor though & all here know about *Hamlet. Kenneth Branagh did a powerhouse & Academy Award nominated remake in '89 & *Pacino did a very good documentary Looking for Richard with an all star cast about how to understand and appreciate William Shakespeare-(died at only 52) strill, I just can't get intr it due to the dialogue, anyone else? (P.S. In all polls & surveys William Shakespeare is voted the all-time greatest writer)
  7. Forgot INTOLERANCE (l96) Anybody else ever think of seeing Hollywoods 2nd big epic on The Silver-Screen? They designed The Dolby Theatre-(formerly The Kodak Theatre, when I was there) at 680l H,. Blvd & of course home of annual Oscars, also really called Hollywood and Highland. It's huge design, not like D.W's though not that huge, after the 1916 silent epic The drama silent pix don't hold up nearly as much as the comedies
  8. It's hard to figure considering it's Kubrick, but I have never seen all of Barry Lyndon, yet anyway? & it took home 4 Oscars that year of *Cuckoo's Nest
  9. did you see Absence on cable on demand?
  10. Wrote about this a ew days back, god one huh Went to it in north NJ when it was released But, *Paul followed this up with a superb one THWE VERDICT! & being green Oscar-Wise I actually predicted he'd win Best Actor Oscar over *Ben Kingsey in Gandhi? That's ok, my debut year handicapping & didn't know the politics of the AMPAS I also thought E.T. would defeat *Gandhi? Don't get me wrong the latter is a very strong bio (***1/2) but falls exactly into that epic coffee table BP type
  11. Saw that on tv a year after it's theatrical release & one sick guy Keitel played, huh But both Ebert & Siskel felt he shoulda been nommed for it Overall for me (**-out of 4) some despise it, not me though There's a follow up but better & funny with *Nicolas Cage, look for it
  12. Mr. Leonard Maltin hated this movie, but admits his wife loved it But he's right it's pretty much an official prequel to The other Joker roles to come, even-(again, not to divuge) there's a millionaire he swears is s father named WAYNE, as in Bruce wayne whch is this character's son's name in the film & about the same age. So,though very dfferent, it kinda sets things up *De Niro should get more credit here, it's as if Rupert Pupkin made it 35yrs later & turned out to be a total jerk instead Feels like a *Scorsese picture to, in my view anyway I felt that about quarter of the way in & think it's strong $93m weekend is due to it's word of mouth bleakness I predicted at least $120m opening Still very strong medicine
  13. Wwill also certainly be up for Best Make-Up, though-(not to give too much away) it's the 2nd half when he applies his own true make-up However, I bet Judy & maybe The Irishman-(due to the anti-aging) may also be in there, only 3 in that race Though that can be attributed to Visuals instead who knows they pull some off the wall stuff & very poss one of the comic books like End Game may be in the 3rd slot?
  14. thank you if you were citing to me though? still make some writing errs, but still must use mostly 1 arm, due to the left one being dislocated
  15. Barely over B. Saddles my vote as *Mel's best My reason B & W
  16. I just saw a str\iong true story from 1983 a tv movie starring then 66yr old Robert Mitchum-(the same year he did the hugely popular & media crazy mini-series THE WINDS OF WAR (**1/2) Personally I think it's sequel 5yrs later in '89 WAR AND REMEMBERANCE was much better (***1/2) with stunning holocaust sequences A Killer in the Family (***) also with a very young James Spader, Eric Stoltz & Stuart Margolin This guy he plays makes Mr. Powell in Night of the Hunter and Max Cady in Cape Fear seem like choir boys You can easily find it online & I think it was youtube But this tv movie slipped through the cracks in his long caeer (P.S. I love the story he tells when he was about age 15-16 & always getting into trouble His mother asked him what e wanted to do with his life & he simply said "I Think I want To Be A Bum" unquote & was for a few yrs riding the rails, etc His brother-(looks just like him) did just that himself)
  17. It's only nominations that year were for Best Make-Up & Cinematography though
  18. Yet another of *Beatty's ladies for awhile, matter of fact all 3 in Shampoo (l975) He was especially crazy about *Julie Christie though
  19. went to/reviewed that little film in early '83 Many critics went hog wild over it
  20. Personally I would also add-on City Lights and Modern times-(never saw *Chaplin on the big screen, only the '92 bio), The Searchers & The Quiet Man, Dumbo (l94l version of course), Inherit the Wind, Singin' in the Rain & as she cited 2001
  21. To Gershwin, found out these guys are on youtube, but how much & exactly when please? & is it really called IT'S IN THE BAG? thanx
  22. Affleck cheated unlike m. keaton and others and used steroids big time for this role
