Which movies would you most love to see in a theatre?
spence replied to spence's topic in General Discussions
Thanks to Polly & as I've written here & else where in the past for some reason I just cannot get a break & see *GFI in the theatre??? I mean I;ve spoken to theater mgr's &they saw it & at the same darn theatre. Though I rate KANE as they say, The Greatest Motion Picture of All-Time *Godfather is my own favorite though 2001 musta been something in a big screen theatre huh & ironically plan to go & see *Godfather, Part II on November 1st as pt of TCM/Fathom Series. Classics I got to see on The Silver-Screen to date (*-always denotes an Oscar winner) and in no special order>Kane (l995 at the Tampa Theatre, you couldn't pick a better place to see it either), *GWTW-(3 times over the years), *Casablanca-(though a small screen), Rebel without a Cause around 1996 or so, Treasure of the Sierra Madre in 1986 though the theatre had the you know what to edit scenes out!? & The Public Enemy same place in '86, It's a Wonderful Life (Tampa Theater fir Christmas 1996. Check out it's websiteshows how stuck in time it is), Apocalype Now-Redux 2001 same movie palace, Guess Who's Coming to Dinner also there, (THE WORDS AE GETTING DEKETED/EATING AGAIN FOLKS AT EDITING?) *Lawrence of Arabia just a month ago as opt of TCM's series, *West Side Story, Wizard of 0z, The Exorcist-Revisited in 2001, Fantasia: 2000, Rear Window around1985, Vertigo same year & hopefully if all pans out *GFII. What I missed in TCM/Fathom's series is True Grit far from JW's best, but never got to see him on the big-screen If I had may way it would be almost a tie between The searchers & the Quiet Man though & BIG-SCREEN WISH LIST FOR MYSEKF> *GFI, Captains Courageous, Bad Day at Blck Rock,Some Came Runing, Inside Daisy clover or her Solendor in the Grass-(her best &her fav NATALIE, but Daisy is just the one I watch the most) AGFAIN, EXCUSE MESSY WRITING & MISSING LETTERS, IT'S THE SITE, AGAIN Just wroteon 2 iothers with no trouble WHAT ARE YOURS??? -

Whats your view of the 18933 *Kate version-(she was angry that she won her very first Academy Award for Morning Glory & not LW that yr) & Winona's jo in the wonderful 1994 remake, also with Susan Sarandon. It's score as usual by him by Thomas Newman just added the perfect touch (NOTE: he may well be pitted vs his brother Randy come Oscar time, Thomas for 1917 and Randy for Marriage Story?) -

I agree to a degree, but it doesn't glamorize guns, it's obvious this character is gone mentally, so it's not like DK or it's sequel Plus tons more fix nowadays that have guns & action everywhere, just look at Sly's pretty entertaining Expendables franchise, that glamorizes guns There are only short bursts of gun violence here though They are trying & succeeding into turning this exceptional film into a political football, again This goes on a lot, back in '88 *Scorsese's Last Temptation of Christ ($8m.) was everywhere & many since Among my files I have lists for almost everything & the most violent I've ever seen td are> Passion of the Christ (still made $374m. in the states & excellent filmmaking!), 300, Kill Bill, volume 1-(I prefer this sequel over the first because that had more an Asian flavor & this was obviously western & Morricone./Leone) 2008's Dark Knight was much more violent through out then The Joker -
I saw *Lawrence of Arabia a few weeks ago on the silver-screen & plan to also see *GFI on November 1st as pt of TCM's Fathom Series, but what films would you most want to go & see on THE SILVER-SCREEN? As they say it s quite a different experience then seeing something on tv I've been lucky enough over 38yrs to be able to go and see about 15 classic old movies-(to me old is 20 to 25yrs) like a car Even the mt. summit & at thee ultimate theatre The Tampa Theatre-(Est 1926-) even has an old, old guy playing he mighty Wurlitzer on stage, he died & his daughter immediately picked up the mantle The move of course was KANE in 1995 & have been back there 4 more times, it's even fancier then Grauman's in Hollywood as far as Movie Palaces go So what films do you fans most want to see someday in such a theatre, or even a normal one? THANK YOU

Just went to The Joker yesterday afternoon & as I just write elsewhere it was calm, quiet & no punks Matter if fact the few that were there were 25 & up for the most part Even here in FL though still no make-up allowed & after those awful movie theatre shootings yrs ago they used to have to check moviegoers bags, even ladies purses, then they stopped for a longtime, though for this did have to just briefly look inside my old, original 1994 TCM Duffel Bag. As for the hugely hyped movie it's like nothing folks expected in advance, a very dark, sad, haunting-(especially after) & yes, ultra violent-(though brief outbursts only) motion picture & critics are somewhat accurate in comparing it to Taxi-Driver, somewhat only though, because Travis Bickle was a loner but strong as..... J. Phoenix's character is stunningly weak to start with. As I watched I kept thinking NYC is thee single worst place for the guy to live in. Not to divulge too much & people should be banned for giving away it's last 40 minutes or so! It's a stunner to say the least Most coverage hardly shows *De Niro in here, but he's a pivotal part of this somewhat Thriller. Not exactly Marvel material, so unlikely people will go back and back to it. I respect it, but don't love it like Stan & 0llie As for J. Phoenix-(birth name was Leaf, his parents were hippies & named him that & River Phoenix & I think there are more in the family) Never liked Joaquin myself, but as all say he is amazing here & has the Academy Award, it's the motion picture itself that stunned me, it was fantastic & any idiots that may want to take their kids to this are crazier then this title character I since seeing it if it's potential blockbuster $B.O$ may not be quite as huge-(I predicted $275m.) because it is so dark & repeat viewings don't seem like they may not happen. Certainly not Batman or Avengers material I'd say the Dark Knight (2008) was a lot more violent My personal score highest possible 4 out of 4 stars!) & best new release I went to in a year Next hopefully *GFII & maybe if it opens-(Nov. 27th) The Irishman Check it out for yourself Thank you -
You scooped me, never heard of that one Difficult to imagine him being a bad guy though, huh I'll look it up in my books or online If memory serves runners-up to Lecter in *Silence of the Lambs were Darth Vadar & Norman Bates Pretty certain this AFI special wasn't televised though Only the first two from 1998 & 99 were The one I really wanted to see was in 06 100 Years of Movie Music-(not quite the titke) held at the Hollywood Bowl & *J Williams conducted entire event Just remembered, the president did something he coulda got into for around 2002 he sent me lots if free stuff & free including booklets & posters, most notably 100 Years,,,100 Stars (l999) hanging almost above this desk actually. They stopped that though But I do think they aired 100yrs...100 Laughs where Some Like It Hat was tops

& moviefans still have o idea the original Lechter was portrayed y Brian Cox in Michael Mann's haunting 1985 Manhunter

Who would you vote for as No.1?
-
American Film Institute-(Est 1967-) AFI actually divided it into 2 categories that time 100 Heroes...100 Villians-(I have the complete list somewhere for those interested, or visit it's marvelous site) For the record as I said Hannibal Lechter was voted A #1 all-time villian &*Peck as Atticus Finch was voted #1 Hero Of course for To Kill a Mockingbird (1962)
-
How about in these forums though? & you are right, that would be great for the station as well

A bit off the topic, speaking of Seymour-(now an incredible 68!) who recalls her-(excellent performance as a dragon lady) 1980's remake of East of Eden? It covered the entire novel as opposed to the exceptional 1955 J.D. version & she was in Jo Van Fleet;s Oscar winning role, but her entire life Both Sam & Timothy Buttons starred along w/Lloyd Bridges and others

If I can stay awake getting ready to watch the Bucs on Fox ch 13 down here They are without a doubt among the worst teams ever, except for 2005 or 06 when they went all the way My heart since I was ten has always been for some reason with the Dallas Cowboys though Speaking of which one of the most beautiful actresses ever Jane Seymour did an awful tv movie based on the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders, anybody hear if it, around 1978/79
-
Have they on here ever dine a topic just on movie VILLIANS? AFI voted for *Hopkins as Hannibal Lechter
-
Ever see Lynch's 1990 Wild at Heart? A good (***) but not great a one, crazy as always-(but then again he did something like 1999's wonderful The Straight-Story with Richard Farnsworth-(nommed) But Lynch created yet another off the charts & UGLY bad guy in Willem Dafoe in Wild.... as Bobby Peru Think it was *Nicholson who very loudly said he thought Dafoe deserved the Oscar for the sick role For weirdness nothing can hold a candle to his 1976 cult flick Eraserhead!
-
You really should & start with BV-(knowing you though you've probably seen Blue Velvet already) & then the original series But, that music must be loud I'm not giving anything away, but it seemed most of the country were going crazy about "Who Killed Laura Palmer" & I won bets getting it about 2 moths earlier just had a gut feeing THANX TO TCM FOR FIXING THAT TECH PROBLEM!
-
*Davis won he NYFCC Award (New York Film Critics) but as you know se lost the Oscar-(which she adored such things & was even AMPAS president in '35) I agree with historians that both she & Gloria Swanson canceled each other out, letting *Judy Holliday take Best Actress for Born Yesterday instead, speedracer, do you like *Eve-(among Ben Mankiewicz' top 5) over Sunset Blvd?
