Personally I like *Greer-(said to be Irish but most say was really Scottish) over *Julie & tied *Bette Davis 5 consecutive *Oscar nods 1939, 40, 41, 42 & 1943 which as competitive as *Bette was probably did not sit well with the fmr AMPAS president, same as not being voted & crowned The Queen of Hollywood-(Myrna Loy was) in the same 1938 moviefans survey 20 million replied. And of course *Gable was easily voted The King. I suspect the equally competitive *Joan Crawford was not thrilled about that either. Garbo & *Kate wouldn't have cared less though The still there for ow El Capitain is where they held the official presentation with *Tracy actually crowning sometime pal *Gable L.B. & M-G-M at first held a ceremony at the factory, but all said it was cheap & tacky (TRIVIA: you also mentioned 1982's terrific (***1/2) Victor/Victoria, it's by far the most nommed film of Blake Edwards career, though he was never up for a statuette, with 7 noms & whatever became of Leslie Ann-warren, she was dynamic in there I know she's still around in her 70s obviously never had another like that though Lots of fellow Oscar oddsmakers predicted 1st time Robert Preston to Walk Down-the-Aisle for it but I stuck to my guns & *Louis Gossett, Jr in An 0fficer and a Gentleman won 1982-(my debut yr going to 36-60 new releases & forecasting Oscar) was a great cinematic year -

L.B. Mayer was almost in love with *Garson & considered her the grand epitome of a lady & true story, the toughest as nails epitome of a movie mogul-(*Harry Cohn being the meanest, but barely) tried to off himself over being rejected by Ann-Miller, sleeping pills Believe James Bacon said it was after WW11 Americanization of Emily (***1/2) was not only James Garner's personal favorite he made, but pal *Eastwood's too & deserved more *Oscar attention then it got *Melvyn Douglas-(l90l-8l) musta' aged faster then any other famous actor, except of course *The Great: Spencer Tracy Even non moviebuffs are stunned when they see him in say Nuremberg & you tell them he's only age 61 Don't know much about *Douglas, if he was a drinker, etc Look at the man in Captains Courageous, Ninotchka & then Being There? -
Who would you like to see honored as Star of the Month...?

Not especially a fan deserved her Academy Award though, but 1 tough lady Most on here will understand why I say that -

I'm prejudiced so it would have to be NATALIE WOOD again Did they ever do W.C. Fields yet, think I recall them doing it years back What about STEVE McQUEEN? You'd know top, has he recently been STOTM-(only made 28 films)? & as I once wrote lets start with directors as STOTM -

(TRIVIA: not particularly a fan of *Julie, but name her Oscar nods & 1 victory, the yrs she was crowned annual $Box-0ffice$ champion & this is not trivia, but who else saw 1981's Blake Edward's S.O.B.? To me her half of the comedy was ok, but *Holden's & his pals was tremendous! A mixed bag (strong **1/2-out of 4 stars) By the way S.O.B. was *William's final film, he was drunk as... & fell in his apt in Santa Monica opening his head on a table not found for a longtime, so much so they didn't recognize him when finally found in November of 1981-(to me he's linked with NATALIE WOOD because she died same awful weekend & tv's ET was born covering her stunning death daily) In answer to her oms she has 3 to date, but what for & I still have a problem myself in her getting the annual AFI Award over *Duvall, *Hopkins think she'll be around longer -
THE JOKER sad, depressing, haunting & tremendous
spence replied to spence's topic in General Discussions
Just went to The Joker yesterday afternoon & as I just write elsewhere it was calm, quiet & no punks Matter if fact the few that were there were 25 & up for the most part Even here in FL though still no make-up allowed & after those awful movie theatre shootings yrs ago they used to have to check moviegoers bags, even ladies purses, then they stopped for a longtime, though for this did have to just briefly look inside my old, original 1994 TCM Duffel Bag. As for the hugely hyped movie it's like nothing folks expected in advance, a very dark, sad, haunting-(especially after) & yes, ultra violent-(though brief outbursts only) motion picture & critics are somewhat accurate in comparing it to Taxi-Driver, somewhat only though, because Travis Bickle was a loner but strong as..... J. Phoenix's character is stunningly weak to start with. As I watched I kept thinking NYC is thee single worst place for the guy to live in. Not to divulge too much & people should be banned for giving away it's last 40 minutes or so! It's a stunner to say the least Most coverage hardly shows *De Niro in here, but he's a pivotal part of this somewhat Thriller. Not exactly Marvel material, so unlikely people will go back and back to it. I respect it, but don't love it like Stan & 0llie As for J. Phoenix-(birth name was Leaf, his parents were hippies & named him that & River Phoenix & I think there are more in the family) Never liked Joaquin myself, but as all say he is amazing here & has the Academy Award, it's the motion picture itself that stunned me, it was fantastic & any idiots that may want to take their kids to this are crazier then this title character I since seeing it if it's potential blockbuster $B.O$ may not be quite as huge-(I predicted $275m.) because it is so dark & repeat viewings don't seem like they will happen, not like the Marvel flix Certainly not Batman or Avengers material I'd say the Dark Knight (2008) was a lot more violent My personal score highest possible 4 out of 4 stars!) & best new release I went to in a year Next hopefully *GFII & maybe if it opens-(Nov. 27th) The Irishman Check it out for yourself Thank you -
THEJust now caught on the home page the marvelously crafted images of Godzilla on your home page among your best (NOTE: You folks got to get back to GP's-(Guest Programmers) though, I am positive there are a ton more celebs that would just love to be on & air their top 4 all-timers!) I have a compilation of about 80 GP's & counting them overall, it's close but the majority of picks barely goes to KANE, THE TREASURE OF THE SIERRA MADRE

THE JOKER sad, depressing, haunting & tremendous

went to it yesterday here in Pinellas Co, FL & nothing was going on Then last evening I heard more about the cops thing, thy will be plane clothed cops with guns at certain screenings & even here absolutely no make up is allowed But, once you see the fantastic film, you'll see it's obviously not that kind of movie like a Marvel & seeing over & over type, just stunning It's not like anybody thought in advance -

He can be rude & bizarre-(to quite an episode of Sienfeld) the late night talk show hosts' had a field day when he lost the Oscar to Phillip Seymour Hoffman in Capote (2005) &showed Phoenix-(up for Walk the Line) & the scowl on his face was hilarious Then he appeared on Letterman with full beard & barely spoke The hype is absolutely 100% though, he has the GOLDEN STATUE for this film -

DARGO, you know the truth, there are never too many MARX BROS movies to study addictive tosay the least on that note as a kid of about age 13 somehow & I totally forget how I got it, I was given a then moldy smelling book titled THE MARX BROTHERS SCRAPBOK Still have it among my collection & love it BIG-TIME! Do you have it? Mostly takes place around '71 & Groucho being interviewed Did you also like YOU BET YOUR LIFE? -
yeah I know, but I truly mean in Karger's slot Really like Jenna M though
-
I've written about this before & for those that did not see it, why not filmmaker, author & film historian Peter Borganovich-(l939-) as a TCM Host? Especially in fmr EW magazine's Dave Karger's slot I had a sub to the once great magazine for decades, then it got pc,etc Premiere magazine-(l987-2002) was in a different league. Plus, it got more $expensive$ But like Leonard Maltin-(l950-) Bogdanovich is a walking film encyclopedia & knew a lotta' the heavyweights Hitch, *Welles, Hawks and more he used to take a vey young Cybil Shepard to all the movies, mostly classics, she said she slept through most of the & Bogdanovich is particular is a huge western buff & unlike most rates Hawks over *Ford He's also an actor having a re-occurring role on tv's tremendous The Sopranos So please consider thank you
-
On the level, they actually get that frightened? One should point to *jimmy Stewart's fun clown in *Greatest Show on Earth instead right & typically of today they came up with a term for it
-
o also somewhat study Hollywoods WOF. though a lot of their choices & non choices are a bit of a joke Did they dig up O.J. & Cosby's star, somebody should know I'll never forget the daily war going on over trump's WOF-Star A few heavyweights still don't have one MADONNA for example & Springsteen Recipient like AFI award must be present & she hates Hollywood because of how they treated her in the very beginning-(around age 19-23) Gee, where are those guys now? though she's a mass of contradiction & on one nigt had her image lit up taking up one side of THE ROOSEVELT But she got rid of her Tinsel-Town home in 09, sold it to her brother-(of 7 siblings) for over 4m. obviously her money anyway & now that Bruce has finally broken into the movies with a docu Western stars, still don't see him accepting a star, maybe? Meg Ryan fir some strange reason still has nada & it goes without saying woody has nothing either or ever will, like in *Annie Hall to say the least not a fan of LA (PS. ever remember yet another hilarious bit in it when he went to order something to eat in Hollywood & just said "I'll Have a Plate of Mashed Yeast" unquote
-
GOOD ONE! Do you have that thing about clowns scaring you, like so many others, even before King's It?
-
Like THE IRISHMAN for Best Picture & BD-(*Scorsese) they might as well write the names n the golden statue right now, same goes for Phoenix ^& likely *Al to as Hoffa. Recall '88's somber & vey good (***1/2) Running on empty & & River Phoenix-(though a leading role was typically up for support) still like him over Joaquin myself
-
Hey buddy, ironically just now write a pc about this & how they ordered lots more cops at screenings-(check it out) I certainly hope I'm not boxed-in & with punks today at it Been years since I put up with that, one of my 3 goings to *Titanic as a fact, so packed they let people sit on the floor! Sound like an old guy, but when I was a kid-(10-12) my & my pal went to Jaws-9only a $buck$) everyday just about & didn't cause a racket & The Towering Inferno-(because McQueen was my hero) & a film called Breakout(ever hear of it) with Bronson-(his hero) I was totally wrong one time in 1985 dropped off at some $1 theatre to see Vertigo, packed with kids & they were quiet & at it's famous finale gave Vertigo a standing ovation!
-
Always go to the news & then e mails first & couldn't help one of the top stories about The Joker-(I;m seeing it today) & they have ordered a lot more police at screenings of the movie, Colorado already drew the line on a few things last week Of course the mass shooting in a theatre showing The Dark Knight & the punk had Joker make up on. It id not-(or I didn't read entire story yet) note of this was everywhere or not though Check it out other than increasing the size if it's $B.O.$ due to all the publicity-(I predicted $250 to $275m domestic) some of it may be hurt due to older, respectful & law biding quiet moviegoers?
