  1. Could it be this week with TCM? Seems like it's everyday & one cannot reply either to thank him on it either, so I am trying it here
  2. Forget it's title right now, but I get it daily in my inbox & our very own TopBilled does it Focusing on a certain star or film each & every day Darn it the name is right there on the tip of my burned out grain? As usual he's always there THANK YOU PAL YOU RUN THESE FORUMS!
  3. *Engish Patient was overrated but still very good (***1/2) But 9 Oscars, that's more then *Lawrence of Arabia?
  4. Can you believe I still have at least one hefty bag full of those marvelous mags
  5. ith the inernet packed with the off the charts reviews of Scorsese's 3 & 1/2hr over $140m budgeted epic The Irishman allover the place (some even going so far as calling it among the all-time greatest!), who else saw 1992's Hoffa ($24m.) (strong (***-out of 4) or Robert Blake in a good 1985 tv mini-series Blood Feud about jimmy Hoffa-(l912-75) about his ongoing feud with Bobby Kennedy. Blake was about same size at 55 as The Little Hammer in Sicilian meant "martaduso" hope I spelled it ok. But *Jack was nothing short of astonishing in Danny de Vito's epic bio & I can't really recall anyone else taking on this pt? THANX
  6. Below are my ultra early predictions of the possible frontrunners of the Nominees for THE 92nd ANUAL ACADEMY AWARDS (AMPAS) ACADEMY OF MOTION PICTURE ARTS AND SCIENCES-(top 6 majors only forecasted for now & al still subject to change until 10 days prior of official announcement on Jan. 19th, 2020 & Oscars to be presented "Live" on ABC -TV from Hollywood, Blvd Sunday Feb. 9th) (NOE I predicted this would occur, the brand new headquarters, museum, library is now held off until 2020 check it out at Oscars.org $338 million budget, Santa Monica & Wilshire) WHO & WHAT MAY BE IN THE GOLDEN RACE? (*-Denotes possible frontrunner) & to date over 9,000 voters BEST PICTURE-(8 to 10 again)?: DOWNTON ABBEY FORD VS. FERRARI HARRIET *THE IRISHMAN (should lead the field w/most overall noms 11 to 12) THE JOKER-(will likely make the most$$$ at approx. $275m.) LITTLE WOMEN THE MARRIAGE STORY 19l7 ONCE UPON A TIMEIN HOLLYWOOD ($140m.) & THE TWO-POPES BEST ACTOR?: ROBERT DE NIRO in The Irishman LEONARDO DiCAPRIO, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood ADAM DRIVER, Marriage Story *JOAQUIN PHOENIX, The Joker (A BLOW-OUT!) & JONATHAN PRYCE, The Two-Popes BEST ACTRESS?: *CYNTHIA ERIVU in Harriet SCARLETT JOHANSSEN, Marriage story SAOIRSE RONAN, Little Women ALFRE WOODWARD, Clemency & *RENEE ZELLWEGER, Judy SUPPORTING ACTOR?: CHRISTIAN BALE in Ford vs Ferrari *TOM HANKS, A Beautiful ay in the Neighborhood ANTHONY HOPKINS, The Two-Popes *AL PACINO, The Irishman & BRAD PITT , 0nce Upon a Time in Hollwood SUPPORTING ACTRESS?: ANNETTE BENING in The Report *LAURA DERN, Marriage Story MARGOT ROBBIE, 0nce Upon a Time in Hollywood MAGGIE SMITH, Downton Abbey & MERYL STREEP in Little Women-(TRIVIA/FACT: If nommed again it will mark her already by far record of 22 td) BEST DIRECTOR?: GRETA GERWIG for Little Women BOON LOON HO, Parasite *SAM MENDES for 1917 *MARTIN SCORSESE, The Irishman & *QUENTIN TARENTINO, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood & JUST FOR US MOVIE MUSIC & COMPOSERS BEST ORIGINAL-SC0RE?: *HARRIET (Terrence Blanchard) THE IRISHMAN MARRIAGE STORY (Randy Newman) *1917 (Thomas Newman) & *WAVES thank you for now
  7. AGREED ALL THE WAY ABOUT *STEINER! Matter of fact AFI in 2006 voted it runner-up only to SW as all-time greatest motion picture score Stagecoach won in it's category instead
  8. Great pals for over 55yrs & opposites politically, but even (*Stewart confessed many times he voted for *Hank for 1940 The didn't yet have nearly as many Pre-Oscar awards then, bt even The Golden Globes-(est: 1943) So NYFCC-(New York Film Critics Circle) voted for Chaplin instead in The Great Dictator-(he refused it though) It was his only acting Oscar nomination, despite at first having one for 1927-28 The Circus, but L.B. Mayer despised him & had it removed so he wouldn't be his Academy awards first Best Actor winner (*Emil Jannings a Nazi won instead) & they decided Board of Governers to just give The Little Tramp a special non competitive statue instead So that made the one & only competitive statuette Charlie ever won was for Limelight (l952) Best Music Score & I'll Remember You Eternally, but due to the political climate & HUAC of the time it wasn't allowed a legit LA release until 1972?
  9. 1855 ranks up there under 1939 & 3rd 1962 as Hollywoods Greatest Year
  10. & although I've already shout my moth of & predicted about (12) for The Irishman, only see it sweeping 5, 6 to 7 overall & *Titanic deserved a dozen due to Gloria Stuart not winning & deserved to Didn't La La Land land about 10? To me *West Side deserved all it's victories except & this has always been a headscratcher to even non Oscar buffs *G Chakiris??? Especially when one considers his competition that Oscar race year>Monty ****, Judgment at Nuremberg, both Gleason & George C. in The Hustler?
  11. & My own choices for 1979, the year I fell in OVE with THE M.O.V.I.E.S. at about age14 or so Film: Apocalypse Now Actor: Peter sellers in Being There Actress: *Sally Field in Norma Rae S. Actor: Robert Dvall, Apocalypse Now S. Actress: Meriel Hemingway in Manhattan-(only due to *Streep really being the leading lady in *Kramer) Director: Francis Ford Coppola for Apocalypse Now & score: *A Little Romance (George Delerue)
  12. VS. my own skim, Best Picture: The King of Comedy Actor: Al Pacino in Scarface Actress: Shirley MacLaine S. Actor: Jack S. Actress: Linda Hunt Best Director: Woody Allen for Zelig & Scoring: *The Right Stuff (Bill Conti)
  13. For this movie reviewer & 38yr Oscar oddsmaker my Alternate Oscars for 1984 are? (Top 6 majors only & 1 more for us music buffs) Best Film: Once Upon a Time in America (D/C only) Actor: Albert Finney in Under the Volcano Actress: Mia Farrow in Broadway Danny Rose S. Actor: Adolph Caesar, A Soldier's Story S. Actress: Geraladine Page The Pope of Greenwich Village Best Direction: Sergio Leone for 0ce Upon a Time in america & Best 0riginal-Score: Once Upon a Time in America (Ennio Morricone)
  14. my own favs-(without Oscar) for 1984 were> Once Upon a Time in America (not the chopped up 139min version they release here, but the directors cut of 227 minutes) & it's tremendous score by Morricone serves as a perfect companion pc to his & Leones masterful Western from '69 Once Upon a Time in the West-(NOTE: You can easily find both together & with massive orchestra w/Ennio on youtube, pretty long too & Cinema, Paradiso's beautiful score. The one for west even does the entire number of Harmonica with the orchestra) Others gave 4 stars to: Broadway Danny Rose, Killing Fields, almost with Under the Volcano & a couple others & on splash ($69m. gross) It was that summer-(MAN, IT WAS HUMID & WHEN THEY FILM INSIDE ALL MOVING AIR MUST BE SHUT OFF, NOT EVEN A TINY FAN & THIS WAS AUGUST IN FL( I got to hang out about 7-8hrs on *Ron Howard's Cocoon ($76m.) (***1/2) Hanging out, though briefly with him on way to his limo quite a distance, *M. Stapleton, Gwen Verdon, Guttenberg, Tahnee welch, Clint Howard & *Jessica Tandy as it turned out on this particular day the 3 main guys Brimkley, Cronyn & *Ameche-(who stunned most all by winning an Oscar for it, as did it's visuals) were all not there at this locale that day, unfortunately I tried telling everyone over the yrs that Wilford Brimley was really only 590 then, nobody believed me though He's just now 85. The strangest irony f al this was filmed almost in my backyard of the ats I then lived in, at a fancy Retremnent Village & where I'd later vote that yr in Nov. But most was shot a couple miles down P Point drive at a less secure village Now when I recall splash, I somehow frgot it when talking to *Ron & we spoke about 1982's Night shift instead Ebert & Siskel always dubbed '84 at the movies the year of SAVE THE FARM w/Places in the Heart, Country & The River Very interesting topic * I Thank you
  15. Cool, another fan of the superbly made 1984 Paris, Texas (4 stars!) I fist discovered in on HB0 around '85 & Nastassja Kinski deserved a supporting nod for it HYPNOTIC & that score y Ry Cooder added perfectly to it all-(never yet nommed either) As for the late Harry Dean Stanton-(his last role was in last yrs Lucky) he was about 92 or so, yet another of the Cool Hand Like cast gone, only Joe Don Baker & Luke askew are left But Stanton could always do no wrong & PT is his best per Ebert & Siskel worshipped this film
  16. Do you mean for 1984? If so *Amadeus ($52m.) Among it's 8 victories Best sound was among them Are you a bit of a fan of the bio?
  17. Not certain if it was here in TopBilled's subject or another, wriing about longest films in cinema history CORRECTION: By far longest number in history is Ina Godda Da Vita at over17 minutes!)
  18. The media had a field day with Charlie Sheen a few yrs back & the gals, besides f course the drugs, now he insists' he has HIV. But, Charlie can't hold a candle to*Warren Beatty -(l937-) and his women & *Warren didn't have to pay them/hookers either an example starting in the '50's with Joan Collins-(YUK), Leslie Caron, NATALIE WOOD, *Lee Grant, Goldie Hawn, *Julie Christie-(they were very close), *Diane Keaton-(also almost married her), MADONNA, *Halle Berry, Annette Bening-(it was her he finally got hitched at age 54) & many more Imagine what it did to *The Woodman's self esteem & ego to have your gal (*Keaton) go off w/*Warren Beatty By the way I can't take credit for nickname of *THE WOODMAN Bill Murray started it in the '70's on SNL when he'd cover the Oscars
  19. Nerdy as he's always been, in reality though he's never had a problem finding ladies, I mean of his age
  20. Tommy Dorsey turned out to be a real JERK! Longer story for another time
