Told this story before, but it never will get old of course My mother (Robyne) was a NYC Rockett circa 1962/63 At that stage of the game she was also the shortest of them all, at barely 5'3. She &the other gals got to meet & work with the likes of *George Burns, Carol Channing, Ricky Nelson, Arthur Godfrey & she almost got to work out with Mr. Bob Hope, but a misshap occurred between her & her best gal pal, so they missed tat boast, unfortunately! They would go by bus all over the country too & around this time she was again in the very hot summertime of NYC & in a ballet class of a Mr. George Ballanchine, she said he wasn't there on that day though However, right next to her though was *SHIRLEY MacLAINE-(l934-) & they virtually spent most of the day together just going through the working out motions. Mom always kinda' thinks *Shirley liked her more because she didn't discuss her being a bigmovie star or also one of "The Rat Pack" One thing I always nagged her about though is why at the end of the day didn't she at least try & get her autograph??? This as she says was just around &prior to 1963's fun & *Oscar nommed role for her in *Wilder & *Lemmon's "Irma La Douce" (***) Ma' says she pretty-much still had her *"Apartment" haircut By the way being an *Oscar handicapper since 1982, I found it amazing that *Shirley was subbed of a s. actress shot for 1990's terrific "Postcards from the Edge" ($39.) (***1/2) Plus, another fine but subtle turn in 2005's "In Her Shoes" She used to always say "Some Came Running"-(my fav. of hers & *Frank's & Dino's for that matter) But in recent years of course it's *"Terms...." despite the fact she & Debra Winger got along like Cats & Dogs (TRIVIA: Her own mom named her *Shirley because she so adored Shirley Temple, but of course it was originally *Shirley Beatty) THANK YOU

Still trying buddy! & next time I swear Im gonna' install that AVATAR (PS. o that note, I know youhave a very nice shot of yourself on your profile, but if you had to select anyone else who would it be, or a film?)
-
Come to think of it, they may be right on Errol here? Probably about age 24 or so. Is he your favorite actor by the way?
-
thanx for fast response! Kinda'; figured that. As long as it's not some sickie porno that far too-many indulge themselkves with thesedays, right JUST KIDDIN' OF COURSE BY THE WAY, THAT IS AN EXCELLENT IDEA FOR A HREAD-(prefer the term TOPIC myself) & NOW, stil can't make-out yoyr Avatar/.image??? Now I;m pretty positive it's not Mr. Flynn, but who? I;'ve been trying to install one of my A #1 all-time idol *:"The Great: Spencer Tracy" for years now, but something always comes up. I even have 2 images saved for it to, it just seems so tedious, is it? Several of my tcm, pals (Jakeem, LawrenceA, TopBilled have told me how a number of times, so far to no avail though) THANK YOU
-
WHOOPS, sorry about that (Speedracer, I now see you were thee AUTHOR) I think we corresponded befoire, not quite certain I deal with ever so many & not just on here, thee best. Is that AVATAR of a young ERROL FLYNN, if not then who? THJANX
-
Please assist, who is original author of this great 4 star topic by the way? & are the movies chosen on here-(this forum) solely flix that a person saw on the network (TCM) or anywhere? THANK YOU & PLEASE LET ME KNOW
-
(***-out of four) not a big fan of Ida's but she was almost as strong in WB's difficult to finish, because Edward G. Robinson & George Raft detested each other! At any rate she stole the picture 1941's "They Drive By Night" (***1/2-out of 4 stars)
-
Many still get upset that the never a contender IdaLupino-(l9l8-l995) won the Best Actress award for "The Hard Way" but never was up for even a supporting *Oscar i.e. 1972's "Junior Bonner" I;m not certain, but believe now after seeing something online that wasthen covered with foliage. That Lupino & her sister for that matter, were very close to ERROL FLYNN. His modest grave is virtually right next to theirs. Something only in more recent yrs you can see via the internet.

(TRIUIA/FUN/FAX:"The Great 0ne: Jackie (RALPH KRAMDEN) Gleason-(l9l6-l987) always claimed his own role models, heroes & idols were>Oliver Hardy-(l892-l957) & Jack 0akie-(l903-78) the latter was actually quite deaf

*Oscar victor & character player *Mitchell was just an extraordinary actor! Of course pretty much a part of the famous *Ford stock company & although he of course took home his sole s. actor statue for *Ford's 1939 "Stagecoach" (UA) I think-(though he was superb!) it was more to do with *Thomas also being in other strong roles that legendary cinematic year of 1939 "Only Angels Have Wings" "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" However, the outright overall finest work as an actor I've ever seen him achieve was in *Ford's wonderful Adventure 1940's "The Long Voyage Home" (UA) as Driscoll, leader of the men. & runner-up, or close to it would be 1940's "Angels 0ver Broadway"-(not nommed though) His only other shot was for 1937's "The Hurricane" though? (P.S. TCM has got to start honoring that era's character players now as well as it's monthly "Star of the Month" WHO AGREES?)

Just looked at them again & it does say inbox is full & must delete them, but just how to do so, I';ve tried several times? & cannot just find a normal DELETE button either?

Fine subject matter, but for me I've never really been a fan of Foreign-Language Cinema. & by far prefer "The Dream Factories" of "Hollywoods Glorious Golden Age" & "Studio-System"-(circa 1925-1960/63) easily the most!!! However, there are of course a few genuine foreign flix I adore, most notably 1989's homage to the movies "Cinema, Paradiso" (Italy), "Shoah" (l985-French-German & an extraordinary 9hr docu on the Holocaust), "Ran" (l985-Japoan)-(amazingly Akira Kurosawa's one & only BD nomination?), "La Strada" (l956-Italy), "Das Boot" (l982-German)-(esily to date thee greatest submarine film!), & though Silent, many historians include actress Maria Falconetti's performance in 1928';s "Passion of Joan of Arc" (France) as arguably the finest ever delivered by an actress!) & Abel Gance's also in-nominated silent epic bio "Napolean" (l927-France)
-
Nazi propaganda or not, Leni Riefenstahl-(lived to be age 99!) created extraordinary motion picture/documentaries, here & the 2 "Olympia docu's"
-
& it was their mom Minnie that pushed them into show business, though she didn't live long passing away in 1929. & their father Samuel Marx actually died at the once legendary-(NOW ALSO LONG GONE!?) "Garden of Allah Apts" in 1937. They say all that's left of it thesedays or was a number of years back, is a glass display of the apts where such stars as Errol Flynn, *Bogey & Bacall, *Newman & *Woodward, Dick Powell, Marx Brothers, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Will Rogers, John Barrymore, W.C. Fields, Robert Benchley & lots more just adored it there. Allah Nazimova-(l879-l945) (SEE: "Blood and Sand") owned the place & made certain she could still live in the main apartment until her own demise, she made it pretty big in the silent era (P.S. Not to be confused with the 1936 Dietrich picture)

A FUN MARX BROTHERS TRIVIA BREAKDOWN: Groucho Marx-(Julius Henry Marx)-(1900-l977) Chico Marx-(Leonard Marx)-(& t wasn't "Chico" but "Chicko" due to him always chasingladies')-(l886-l96l), Adolph Arthur Marx-l888-l964), Gummo Marx-(not in films) & what all called a total jerk Zeppo Marx-(Herbert)-(l90l-l979)-(they were mostly spread out in death though? Groucho's ashes were interred in a cemetary in Inglewood & one day someone stole the urn & placed it at the enormouslegendary gates of GLENDALE-=(not the one in Hollywood Hills) CALIFORNIA (317 acxre) "Forest Lawn, park" Where both Chico & Gummo chose. As fgorHarpo, baely anyone knows where he chose as final resting place? Many insist his ashes were put down into his favorite gulf hole (TRIVIA: The only *Academy Award nominations they ever won were for a song from '1937's "A Day at the Races" ("All God's Children") for Best Dance Direction) It lost though & more fun-fax: Richard Farnsworth cut his teeth as a stuntman doubling Harpo on horseback)
-
It's not just that, but I agree with Mr. Leonard Maltin-(l950-) & it also ranks among my overall top dozen all-time favorite pictures!!! Groucho & many chose "Duck Soup" though
-
It's been awhile since I even tried, but I think it said something to the effect is my inbox is full & cannot send or rec. anymore messages at present
-
This seems like it would be simplisticv, but it hasn't been & has been goping on at least 3-4 months now as well Just need help in how to DELETE my previous personal home page messages sent & or received by my fellow TCM-ITES-(TopBilled, Jakeem & more) At this pt I simply cannot contact a sole? Heck, I'm fine writing & doing most items on the net, but when it comes to technical stuff, I have problems Still & this has been going on for years now & even have SAVED THE AVATAR I WANT TO INCLUDE WITH MY HANDLE & ALL, BUT STILL EITHER DON';T HAVE THE TIME TO ACCOMPLISH SUBMITTING THE PHOTO, OR SMETHING ELSE COMES UP INSTEAD & THEN, WHEN I TRY, IUT JUST SEEMS TO TEDIOUS? PLEASE SEND ANY SUGGESTIONS & I THANK YOU
-
(OFF THE TOPIC> To TopBilled & any others, need help on DELETING my personal tcm messages that go back and 4th to others. I am now being blocked & for a couple of months now as far as just trying to contact someone off of these boards
-
Also Honorable Irish Mention & first started watching & lovoing it as a teenager "The Quiet Man" (l952-Republic)
-
NEAT TOP, how could I 4-0get "Baby?" My mom & I watched that almost always when on tv, long before the cable revolution & always LOVED-IT! Comedy holds up far better then drama, do you agree! & once again during that era, despite it being the mt. summit comedy just did not get *Oscar recognition very much. &as you know it was a $flop$ too? Cary just made it look too easy, etc as did *"The Great: Tracy" but he was far more a powerhouse dramatic actor on top of it all. Cary was robbed of nods for "The Awful Truth" (l937-Columbia), "Baby" "His Girl Friday" (l940-Columbia) & in my own "Alternate *Oscars" I would have outright voted for Archie Leach as Best actor for 1944's "Arsenic & 0ld Lace" (WB's) She later said yrs after even talking with him, that she'd hoped he'd gain some lbs-(Cary) due to him in his later yrs looking rather too slim Yet another American Film Institute-(AFI) shoulda' been ashamed of themselves for not giving him it's annual award, yet he ranks runner-up in 1999 GO-FIGURE? I coulda' swore I also joined-in on this topic & cast me own votes? Above all I must have seen both *"The GFI" (l972) & *"GFII" (l974) by far the most times. Also "Bad Day at Black Rock" "Angels With Dirty Faces" "White Heat" & though not her finest, for some reason I am obsessed with Natalie's 1965 "Inside Daisy Clover" (l965) more then her other 46-(& she made 3 for tv?) "Shane" is yet another, though "The Searchers" is still my candidate for A #1 Western. & I know lots will think I'm off my rocker, especially compared to these classics, more obsession, this one with Madonna & her 1990 docu "Truth or Dare" & as I always write about comedy, especially during "The Studiuoi-System" never dates *Chaplin, Keaton, Marx Brothers, Three Stooges-(but only their shorts from 1934-59), Stan & Ollie, W.C. Fields, etc & though I love Abbott & Costello, personally I think the duo hit their zenith with the short-lived &* barely known tv show from 1952-54 WHO EVEN KNOWS OF IT BY THE WAY? & I'd of course include the legendary *"Casablanca" it's just that yrs ago & no matter how perfecto it is on every single level, I got tired of it. Roger Ebert used to say all-the time that "Kane" was the 1 film you could watch over and over again & always discover something else unquote
-
Finally was able to just go and see what is now the 3rd highest grossing picture ever made "THE BLACK PANTHER" & personally found it pretty well made, but slow moving & a wee-bit dull, especially next to the now far too-many other comic books adaptations & even more off the wall it's music score was pretty mediocre? Of course the finale set up for a sequel i.e. franchise, etc Most stunning to this viewer & I know it has it's detractors, is that this has sold more domestic tickets then *"TITANIC?" Overall (Barely ***-out of 4) THANKS
-
So many, both *"GFI" & *"GFII" "Bad Day at Black Rock" "Inside Daisy Clover" "Angels With Dirty Faces" & more
