Longtime character player Lee Tracy-(l898-68) earned a s. actor shot Got almost got blocked back around '34 shooting *Berry's 1934 bio"Viva Villa!" (****-stars) at M-G-pm) when Lee was sooo loaded again & actually **** on a below marching band) -
In short what are your fellow TCMN-0TITES all-time favs in both motion picture comedians & of course films? Nowe on thast lttle poll both *Chaplin & "City Lights" was a landslide! I'll start the ball roliing here> Movie comics: 1st place *Charles Chaplin (l889-l977)-(though like Keaton doesn't make me augh, just watch in amazement) 2nbd Buster Keaton (l895-1966) 3rd The Marx Brothers-(l929-l949) 4th fav. "The Three Stooges" (l934-59)-(I know what your thinkin, too low-brow, but they just crap me up!) 5th W.C. Fields-(879-l946)-(as "Premiere" said decades ago you rarely hear of him thesedays?) 6th Stan Laurel and Laurel Hardy-(l890-l965_& Olllie (l892-l957) & today *"The Woodman;Woody Allen) (l935-) & my personal choices for the top ten fav. pictures: 1st pick "City Lights" (l931)-(though really a comedy-drama or sorts) 2. "Modern Times" (l936-UA) 3. "A Night at the 0pera" (l935-MGM) 4. "Duck Soup" (l933-Paramount-(TRIVIA) Groucho always rated this as their best though) 5th "Dr. Strangelove, or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb" (l964-UK) 6. *"Annie Hall" 7th "Bringing Up Baby" (l938-RKO Radio) 8. -
Also given I've been a card-drying fan club members since 1985 I even rank Ralph & Norton BARELY ahead of Laurel & Olivier-(the latter being one of Gleason's heroes, plus Jack 0akie) above those dymamic duo's of the silver-screen
-
I'm alwayts reminded of that famed number "SEND IN THE CLOWNS"
-
Chris Tucker, Pauly Shore, Jack Black?????
-
How could I 4-get "Never Give a Sucker an Even Break" "The General" & "Seven Chances" PLUS, though a comedy-drama 1979's "Manhattan"
-
(*-denotes an AMPAS winner) My personal top ten all-time fav. movies-(aka dvd time capsule & not of course especially the best, just my favourites listed here) 1st place *The Godfather (l90l-80) Trilogy"-(non theatrical release from '92) 2nd "Kane" (believe the hype, but a very personal note to WR Hearst is involved & most have no idea what "Rosebud" really meant? Don't know how *0rson found out above this very pvt thing though?) 3rd 'Captains Courageous" (l937 M-G-M) (*Tracy's greatest role, though ultra close w/"Black Rock" & "Inherit the Wind" He wrote in his diary it was his fav though) 4th *"Casablanca" (l943-WBV's) (whats left to say??? Only that I once had a marvelous shot of him & Ingrid sitting on some stairs & he literally had block shoes on, due to barely hitting 5'8 & she was about 5'9 & 1/2)) 5th fav. "Modern Times" (l936-UA) (barely vote for this over "CL" (l931) due to his beautiful music "SMILE") & "Dumbo" (l941-Disney/RKO Radio. Almost all critics include at least 1 *Walt Disney animated feature, mostly "Pinocchio"(*Spielberg's #1) & all-time fav. motion picture actors> 1 *Spencer Tracy (l900-l967) 2 *Frank Sinatra (l9l5-98)-(NOTE: Both above *Tracy & *The Chairman" my idols too!) 3. *James Cagney-(1899-l986) 4. Steve McQueen (l930-80)m (limited actor, but my childhood hero & "King of Movie Cool") & 5th *Charles (Spencer) Chaplin-(l889-l977) (he truly deserved to be AFI';s 100yres...100 Stars":99 survey as 1st place?) Actresses: Natalie Wood-(l938-l98l) (very personal choice!) 2. Greta Garbo-(l905-90) 3. *Katharine Hepburn (l907-2003) 4. Winona Ryder (l97l-) (I know most will laugh, but there it is) 5th fav Michelle Pfeiffer (l958-) & Barbara Stanwyck (l907-90) (not only a great overall actress, but one cool lady too!) & Best-(favorite) Directors ever: *1st place *John Ford-(l895-l973)-(all time *Oscar winning champ w/4 BD victories!) 2. Allred Hitchcock (l899-l980) (was give AFI Award, but no &Academy Award?) 3rd Howard hawks-(1896-l977)-(thesole filmmaker that coulkd handle evey film genre! ) 4.Orson Welles (l9l5-85) RHANK YU TO THE REST TCMITES, PLEASE JOIN IN

-
WHATS NOW BURNING BOOKS & now a town is picking on "TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD???"
-
No matter what "The Rock" touches seems to turn to $financial$ gold, huh This almost sold $400m. in tickets domestically alone & reason studios shell out all that $Fogh$ is because action does even greater internationally (P.S. though can you believe that slug Vin Diesel according the FORDES annually report was highest pd actor last year???

WELP< tcm did it once again on this very topic-(this would mark the 33rd time just trying to apply/reapply It was mainly about R. Ryan & roles he lost to for '47 *E. Gwenn, in "Miracle on 34th Street"-(though a leading pt), Widmark in "Kiss of Death" (Fox) & check out Ryan almost better in '68's "God's Little Acre" "Billy Budd" "Odds Against Tomorrow" & of course "The Iceman Cometh" I'd say same from the superb '55 "Black Rock" but think *Tracy through him off balance a lot, so natural, etc & as *Borgnine loves to talk about while watching the footage, *Spence was mainly talking to the ground & poor Robert didn't know what to do?
-
The more well-made (***) but nowhere in same league *"GENTLEMAN'S AGREEMENT" won BP over it though
-
